NEW - Legacy Tablo Firmware Release (v. 2.2.58)

We’ve got an article that covers this: What Options Does the Legacy Transition Enable for My Legacy Tablo Device? – Tablo

This content below is AI-generated, so please read all the footnotes. I see that the very last “Remote Management” bullet appears to be false, so take it with a grain of salt. That bullet may apply only to the LEGACY device and app. The major differences between the Legacy app and the Gen4 app is that the Legacy app has Commercial Skip and Tablo Connect and the Gen4 has free 14-day Guide. But, admittedly, the Gen4 is growing on us so it really looks better. Also, the Gen4 navigation is somewhat klugey and could be difficult to get used to.

  • AI Overview:

Tablo is actively working to bring out-of-home streaming to the 4th Generation devices, as confirmed by TabloTV Community and Reddit users. While legacy models support remote access via “Tablo Connect,” the 4th Gen currently requires local network access, with remote functionality planned for future updates. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Key details regarding Tablo and remote access:

  • 4th Gen Status: Remote viewing is not officially supported yet, though some users utilize VPNs to simulate being at home.
  • Legacy Devices: These models support out-of-home streaming via the “Tablo Connect” feature, which requires setting up port forwarding.
  • New Feature: A recently added “Offline Mode” allows 4th Gen users to watch content during internet outages, provided they are still on their home network.
  • Remote Management: Users can already manage recordings and schedule new ones away from home using the app on mobile devices. [3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10]

Is there a way I can block getting the update on my Legacy Tablo? I dont see anything in it that is better for my needs?

Why block it? It doesn’t force you to use the 4th gen apps, it just allows you the ability to use them if you would like, you can still use the legacy apps.

There is at least one potential downside users might see. Some of us in the beta testing program encountered missing art for movies while viewing via the legacy apps. Things started improving for me last week after they made some guide process improvements but the situation has started to deteriorate again. Another user, has not seen improvement at all. I was missing about 40% of the art for movies and now I am missing about 55%, the other user is missing much more art than I am. The movie art is present when viewing from the gen4 apps.

As mentioned by bbaorbb there might be downsides to upgrading the firmware. I also have found that other device firmware changes often have downside for me that beta testers don’t catch because my situation is different that most others. My internet dl speed is only 3mbs and that is all I can get where I live except for spending more than double what I pay now (Starlink). So every bit of internet background server comms that apps are now building in hurts me more than most others. And like I said there’s nothing in it for me so I would like to know if I can block it, for now or for in the future.

Fair point, wasn’t sure if that particular issue was a public conversation being had. It does seem like at least a “workaround” is available since it sounds like things display correctly in the 4th gen app.

I don’t think the new firmware is going to affect your internet bandwidth usage in any noticeable way (the existing firmware does the same guide updates, etc.), so I’m not sure I understand this specific concern.

Well, I suspect the firmware upgrade might affect your network if you also install and configure the Gen4 app to use your Legacy hardware. If you don’t install the Gen4 device, @TabloTV should have no path into your Legacy device.

However, if you DO install the Gen4 app, create an account, and connect it to the back-end servers and your Legacy device, then you just might take a hit on your network.

Of course, this is just conjecture.

Internal network, sure. But @bigacorn mentioned internet bandwidth. The only way I can see additional internet bandwidth being requried is if you use the 4th gen app FAST channels, which is entirely optional.

I’m not convinced that only the FAST channels require Internet bandwidth. I believe that there are other network requirements for the Gen4 app, which is why they had to come out with an Offline Mode. How unawesome would it be if @bigacorn was constantly switching back and forth from Online to Offline (in the Gen4 app)?

I think the best recommendation is still what @Nilex said - install the FW but not the Gen4 app.

Valid point/question. A clean, concise explanation from @TabloTV would be helpful.

1 - Got it!
2 - Darn!!
3 - it is a 75" UHD, and i know I cannot get UHD from my device
VIZIOS: mkt5586-1.6.116.1-39e18db
Firmware: 86.804.31.3-1
I use the RUKU the most because I get 4K I/O from it

4 The Tablo is running 2.2.42, and I have no idea when that was relased, but it sounds like I’ll be OK

Are you looking for Beta or Theta Testers?"

The response to your original question is yes if you are using a Roku. There is a 4th gen app/channel for Roku.

Is there a way to block or prevent the update? I regularly use Tablo Connect, manual recording schedules, I watch it on my mac computer, I subscribe to automatic commercial skip - so this upgrade is a substantial step backwards. Thanks!

I was just the other day watching tv off my Tablo while flying, something I’ve done for years while flying. I have streamed the Tablo to the rear entertainment system on my minivan while on road trips. I use it all the time. Automatic commercial skip lets me zip through shows in 20 minutes.

Perhaps an IP I should block on my firewall or something to prevent update?

there are huge downsides to upgrading - the transition document mentions all of these features and more go away:

  • Tablo Connect
  • manual recording schedules
  • watching on PC/Mac
  • Automatic commercial skip (which I pay an extra fee for)

There would be a slight increase in bandwidth required, but altogether it’ll be less than other streaming services.

The bulk of this would be when you’re actively streaming FAST channels.

Most of those are related to going away if you upgrade AND cancel your subscription. You don’t lose those simply by by upgrading to this new firmware.

You can use both the legacy and 4th gen apps with this firmware, I’m doing that right now.

I’m looking at the table at the bottom of this page:

Are you going to get updates out prior to the 12th of March. I would rather save the 5 dollars for subscriptions.
