Access Tablo outside of Home

It would be great if Tablo could be accessed outside of your home network through the app. I frequently travel and miss having access to my local news and recorded shows. There shouldn’t be a restriction to access recorded content as long as it’s still on my Tablo at home.

I agree. However, we don’t know what or how much infrastructure the Tablo device would have to dedicate to such a service. This could raise the cost of the unit itself, or this could be like an add-on subscription service. The only thing I really need is remote access to the Guide on my Tablo for setting recording schedules. Then I can set something when I’m away and watch it later. This seems like a good in-between/alternative to full access to Recordings. But I agree that having access would be a nice re-addition to the Gen4 Tablo.

VPN will do the trick. I L2TP into my home network to access my Tablo.

If you want an easy VPN router, I would look into the AmpliFi system.

I’ll second that. Viewing outside the home would be great, but I am much more interested in programming from outside the home. I had that with DirecTV. It is one of the few things I miss.

My understanding is that Tablo has this as a feature they would like to add, but there are many more things they want (need) to do first.

Here’s an article with the specifics: Does the 4th Generation Tablo Support Tablo Connect (Out-of-Home Streaming)? – Tablo.

We do plan to make this a feature, unfortunately, we currently don’t have an ETA.

Hi @KimchiGUN, is out of home viewing as simple as logging into your network via a VPN connection in your home router? Seems too easy, but I’m game to try if it’s that simple.

One more vote for out-of-home viewing. There may need to be a charge for this - it’s a lot of coding and support - but my vote is it’d be worth it for those of us who travel and stream.

Yeah I configured a L2TP VPN server on my home router. Installed Blue Stacks on my laptops, connect to the VPN, and watch TV.

But if you want a simpler way of doing it, looking to getting the AmpliFi home mesh system. It has a really simple VPN feature.

I will give it try. My network will get a much need upgraded to mesh+WiFi 7 shortly. That system’s router comes w/VPN capability. Thanks for the tip.

I just posted my solution to this here for the prior generation Tablos that had this feature, called “Tablo Connect” My solution also uses a VPN, but no VPN hardware to purchase. Not 100% sure it will work with a V4 but it sounds like it would based on prior VPN suggestions that work.
