NVM, i see it’s an older tool:
It’s a client i use daily for my Tablo, it is a legacy Tablo and i don’t have access to one of the new Tablos, but I understand that the ‘Legacy’ apps can’t connect to them.
Okay, I totally don’t get this. There’s also a ton of confusion about what the update does vs what the different apps do.
“4th Generation Tablo apps offer most of the same features as legacy Tablo apps.” Then it goes on to show that the 4G apps drop 5 features and add 3, except that two that they add I already have on my legacy Tablo 4-tuner and legacy apps but now it shows they won’t be supported.
I don’t want to lose the 14-day TV guide. I don’t want to lose recording of series. I don’t want to lose commercial skip. I don’t want to lose watching recordings that are in progress. I don’t want to lose manual recording schedules. It sounds like I can only have some of those, not all, after this update.
Can we try again, please. Why do I want any of this? What are you giving me, and what do I have to give up?
14-day TV guide is still there on both apps
Recordings of series do not change. You can set them up in either app and play back in either app. They are just two interfaces to the same set of data (with the exception of FAST channels).
Commercial skip can only be used on the legacy app, but it will still be there after the firmware upgrade.
You can set up new manual recording schedules if you want those recordings to appear in both apps. Otherwise, they will just show up in the legacy app.
If you watch recordings in progress on an AppleTv or a mobile device, you can still do it on the legacy app. On other devices, it works the same on both legacy and 4th gen.
If you have never used the 4th gen app before, you gain a new interface, access to FAST channels, and a 14 day guide for free (so those on monthly or annual subscriptions to the legacy app could cancel them).
No, that is not correct. This update allows you to use the 4th gen app on your Roku for your legacy device(s). While the functionality isn’t much different on a Roku, it is a very different interface.
It doesn’t matter what streaming device you use with your Tablo.
Here’s the basics:
- If you have an eligible legacy Tablo device
- And you update to the newest firmware
- Then you use a 4th Generation Tablo mobile app to set up an account and go through a short setup process
- You can then access your legacy Tablo device through two different Roku apps: the legacy Tablo app you use today AND the newer 4th Generation Tablo app
- Nothing changes with your legacy Tablo app on Roku or any other platform
- The benefit of the 4th Generation Tablo apps is that you get free TV guide data and DVR features, as well as access to free streaming channels
Not at all.
Nothing changes with the current legacy Tablo apps.
The firmware update and Legacy Transition process simply give you the option to ALSO connect to your Tablo via new 4th Gen apps.
You can continue to use Automatic Commercial Skip and Tablo Connect via legacy apps as long as you continue to have an active subscription.
However, those features aren’t available via 4th Generation apps, even if you have an active subscription.
BINGO!
As @snowcat mentioned, you don’t have to give ANYTHING up if you don’t want to.
Nothing changes with your existing legacy Tablo apps, even if you update your firmware.
But if you update your firmware and complete the Legacy Transition steps, you can ALSO connect to your Tablo with the newer 4th Gen apps. As mentioned above, the primary benefits of that are free TV Guide Data and DVR features, as well as access to the free streaming channels.
I would suggest checking out the quiz on the Legacy Transition website: Tablo Legacy Transition Program - Tablo TV
This will walk you through the options and what you get and what you don’t.

Thank you for taking time to answer. I will update when available.
Just seeing this, looked in FAQ’s didn’t see there, do you lose recordings with transition?
You don’t lose any recordings.
It was covered here: https://support.tablotv.com/hc/en-us/articles/41395108651540-How-to-Enable-the-Legacy-Transition-on-Your-Tablo-Device
Can I access recordings scheduled or created with legacy apps via 4th Generation apps?
Yes! Most recordings previously scheduled or recorded via legacy Tablo apps will be visible, playable and manageable via 4th Generation Tablo apps. The exception is manual recordings. Manual recording schedules will continue to function and create new recordings. However, only manual recordings completed within the previous two weeks will be viewable and playable via 4th Generation Tablo apps (within the Latest screen). Older manual recordings and editing of manual recording schedules will not be available via 4th Generation apps at this time. Those functions will continue to be available via legacy Tablo apps.
Thanks
It should continue to work.
So in other words, I should have never wasted my money on the new 4th gen unit, and then waited until this upgrade became available. Especially since those with the old (but upgraded) units can still use the desktop PC app that 4th gen users like myself will probably never see again.
This new firmware only adds the ability for the Gen4 app to see and control the Legacy devices. I think that’s it in a nutshell.
If you want a Gen4 experience (and features) with your Legacy device - use the Gen4 app.
If you want a Legacy experience (and features) with your Legacy device - use the Legacy app.
Ooof! I believe these functions will be very different in the Gen4 app.
Keep in mind that the Gen4 app is a new, redesigned interface. It’s not going to look or operate the same as the Legacy app.
My legacy roku and fire tv stick apps work fine when the internet is down. I’m waiting for someone to install 2.2.58 and see if that is still true. And if you have a gen 4 you already know how sloppy it is when it tries to work. And the gen 4 loves to phone home quit often compared to legacy.
Yes, it is still true. I disconnected my internet, and the legacy Roku app still worked with the Tablo just fine.
Looking forward to seeing the new firmware! It’s been a while since anything changed on my device. Is there an opt-in for beta testing? I can’t recall if I ever signed up for it. I was a beta tester for years and years ages ago when I had my TiVo.
Edit: NM, found the post about legacy beta testing, so I signed up for any future FW that might be put out.
I’ve never used remote connect before. I tried to test the feature yesterday. I used the legacy Fire TV app 2.0.5. I managed to connect remotely using the Tablo app on a Samsung phone and a Samsung tablet but then it tells me there is no Tablo connected. My network shows that the Tablo is connected to the same IP that the Fire TV app shows. I do have a lifetime Guide Data subscription. What am I missing?
I have both a legacy and Gen 4. But I never use the Gen4 because its UI is missing many “standard” DVR features.
The legacy UI is more like a traditional DVR.
The G4 is busy and I keep waiting for the G4 UI to be improved.
