NEW - Legacy Tablo Firmware Release (v. 2.2.58)

It’s the same lineup, with the exception of FAST channels (only 4th gen app).

Ya, it appears to be a lot of information. I plan to do the firmware upgrade because it’s all been getting better anyway, and my wife likes the new interface better. There it is - I said it.

So you are telling me that with 2.2.58 a channel scan won’t collect any of the FAST channels if I use a legacy app to initiate a scan and I would have to initiate a channel scan using a gen 4 app before the new firmware collects FAST channel information.

Yep. And you have to scan periodically when they add and remove FAST channels.

If you connect with a 4G app to a legacy Tablo on 2.2.58 , the app will require a channel scan as it sees the Tablo as needing to be set up - this scan will load the FAST channels on your Tablo.

If you restrict yourself to only ever using the classic apps, then the FAST channels will not be loaded.

The gen 4 FAST channels are a waste of time since you can get many more and better FAST channels using, Roku, Pluto, or Amazon Fire TV. The only reason to install 2.2.58 firmware would be if the new firmware supported channels broadcasting using MPEG4.

I have a question if I update to the new firmware will it still be able to use TabloRipper ?

Yes, TabloRipper works fine with the new firmware. Other third party apps also work, such as APLTablo, TabloTools, and Tablo Player.

Yes but you can only record them with the Tablo for later viewing or to spin by the commercials.

I nearly exclusively use an Apple TV to watch my legacy Tablo. If I upgrade my legacy Tablo to firmware 2.2.58 and use the 4th Generation Tablo App for Apple TV to access my upgraded legacy Tablo, what happens if I try to watch a recording that’s currently in-progress of being recorded? I can see arguments either way:

  • Can watch the in-progress recording: The underlying recording on the legacy Tablo is transcoded MPEG4, so the 4th Generation Tablo App for Apple TV has no issues playing back while recording is still occurring
  • Can’t watch the in-progress recording: The 4th Generation Tablo App for Apple TV has no underlying support for watching an in-progress recording, regardless of whether the recording is MPEG4 or MPEG2 format

Which is the correct answer?

Nothing will change for you since the difference is caused by a lack of transcoding on the 4th Gen devices:

The exception is when 4th Generation apps for Apple TV or iOS are used in conjunction with legacy Tablo devices via the Legacy Transition. Because legacy network-connected devices transcode MPEG-2 video into MPEG-4, the video legacy Tablo devices deliver is compatible with the built-in player software used by Apple TV and iOS mobile devices, allowing the playback of in-progress recordings.

Installed without a hitch. Looks good.

Since this can be rolled back if needed, I will see if the update is available on my 3rd Gen network Tablo.

Hopefully, the Jackson, Mississippi subchannels will be more accurate in the newer guide.

What does this mean for the on device API running on port 8885? Will it continue to work with this update?

We are 99.99% Roku users. As I understand it this update doesn’t apply to us and won’t change anything, is that correct?

Without commercial Skip and the ability to remotely watch outside my network, anything and everything else is a non-starter for me. I would just move on to YOUTUBE TV or something else. No offense intended.

Where can I find episode details on the new Tablo app?

How do I mark an episode as watched?

Is there a way to have Library default to “All”?

Ok sorry but I’m confused? If I upgrade will I lose the Commercial skip and Tablo Connect? I love both of those features and don’t want to lose them.

From the above, it sounds like you have to use the legacy app for commercial skip and remote Connect, and use the new app for all the other new goodies. Both can still be used going forward.

What is APLTablo?
