Tablo Roku App (4th Gen) Update (v. 1.2.0)

Sorry you’ve run into this.

We have escalated the ticket and will work with you to get to a solution.

My Tablo has not worked correctly ever since the big guide fiasco. I call tech support a couple of times a week, almost daily. Tier 1 support is a joke, we constantly go thru the same Troubleshooting but rarely fix the problem. The problems vary, so its not the same issue. Finally tonight Tier 1 finally admitted you guys have a KNOWN issue working with ROKU. I bought my Tablo in Dec 2024, specifically because it would work woth ROKU. Now, it hasnt worked corectly for at least 6-8 weeks, I’ve reported multiple issues, multiple times.
I’m finally to the point of either make it work with ROKU like you advertised it would, or give me my money back.
It’s been more than 30 days since I bought it, so I’m being told it’s just too bad.
I have emailed info@tablotv.com begging for someone at Corporate to help me.
I’m ready to call the better business bureau because this is getting ridiculous.
PLEASE make this thing work again, or give me my money back!

Day #4 When opening up Tablo first thing in the morning - Same Issues. Blank Guide to start with. Try to Save & Continue Channel Lineup to restore Guide. Then Tablo pops up page to go to Offline Mode several times even though my Internet is fine. After several Save & Continues finally my Guide comes back. Then go to recorded program and get the "exit’ back to Library over and over. Try Live TV and get exit back to Guide. Exit out of Tablo and go back in and Live TV finally starts working. I have been dealing with this BS every morning for 4 Days now.

Here’s what I received from your Support yesterday which I did and of course did NOT work:

Hi there,

Roku had mentioned the exact restart you should be doing for this process is Settings > System > Power > System Restart.

We would also recommend doing a full power down for ~5 minutes after, simply unplugging and powering back up can potentially flush out the Roku problem.

Please confirm once this is done.

Thank you,
Lauren

Yep … I agree. My Tablo finally started working “Ok” about 2 weeks ago or so after the Great Tablo Server Outage. Then they Force these untested Updates out and my Tablo is back to being basically useless. Multiple issues now and they always want the End User to fix their issues. If they had left things alone my Tablo would probably be Ok. But No … push out unproven untested Updates and cause the End User Grief. And Support is of NO Help. If there was a good alternative, I’d throw this piece of junk in the garbage. I mainly use it for the OTA DVR. It’s pathetic.

Day 4: Guide on Roku Ultra is completely blank again this morning. Selecting through shows gets the “Collection Empty” error after 30 seconds or so. Roku 3 on back TV had the guide, but still can’t watch a show for more than a minute. Android phone works fine. Another TV with Roku Express also plays with no problems.

Update to my Sept 4 post here. Two chronic bugs with the new Offline Update as several describe:

  1. App Crashes while viewing
  2. Chronically looping offline-online status with associated freeze of the App

I’ve exhausted Support’s suggested workarounds and more:

  • reboot Roku. Power down Roku and full home network. Wait. Restart.
  • reinstall Tablo app
  • uninstall Tablo app, reboot Roku, then reinstall Tablo app
  • confirm my network performance
(still solid, half-GB down/up fiber ISP, all components Cat 6 ethernet connected, seamlessly supporting all home network components and all Roku apps except: Tablo).

Bug affects both of two 4th Gen, 4 Tuner Tablos here.

Symptoms are intermittent. Worst at 2 to 4 AM Central Time daily, coincidentally when Tablos run daily Guide Update, and coincidentally when many businesses, maybe Tablo?, run host server maintenance.

App Crash: I can view for hours in early evening without symptoms. Then dozens of app crashes start while watching one or more recordings, some of which I’d already partially viewed with no symptoms. App crashed 11 times in a row Friday night for one recording, half of which reset my view point to start of show rather than last-viewed. Wanting to finish my show I chose to FF to the end, and was still repeatedly kicked out, by count, 11 times within minutes of repeat relaunch and FF-ing to unviewed part. Finally saw the rest of the show, but, an ordeal. This same scenario happened with two separate recordings across two dates from two different local TV stations, thus - unlikely to be a TV signal integrity error in the recording, since it affected both with identical symptoms from separate sources/dates, and, both played clean once the App finally allowed them to play.

When App crash repeats, often the App makes the audible launch tone to acknowledge my attempt to restart playback - yet it won’t actually launch playback - an instant fail to launch, as if proactively crashing playback before launch. Compounded frustration.

Offline-Online bug: I have found the Offline status popup to be a false status message that simply freezes the app, pops up a nuisance false error about being Offline - and then within moments the App promptly says it is Online again. When the error pops up I now hit Roku’s Home button and then relaunch Tablo, saving time and keystrokes instead of playing the looping game inside the app. (Try it, hit Roku Home, relaunch Tablo, and see if yours recovers easier that way.)

Perhaps the Tablo host servers are now going offline without staggering their connectivity to end users, sometime around 2+ AM Central. Or more likely, Update coders may have failed to use robust error checking to reliably detect Offline status, instead marking any microburst loss of network response as an instant fail. Best design instead may require a more sophisticated error check such as starting a counter of offline instances, and when the App counter reaches a predetermined number of fails in a pre-arranged time interval, mark that condition, rather than an initial transient interruption, as a likely or true “Offline” state. Tablo programmers, please consider this suggested method to fix this new chronic Offline/Online bug that is dogging so many of us. Please test it.

The above bugs have quickly turned a joyful use of a great app into a miserable experience when it hits. Having exhausted recommended workarounds, I say the workarounds don’t work. They keep me busy though, less time to document symptoms and suggestions, but, yeah, the long-term beloved Tablo app is failing again with a meaningful bug that very much degrades user experience when it hits.

After escalating my support request, Hazel marked my problem as solved and referred me to this post: Update on 4th Generation Tablo Compatibility with Roku OS 14 - Announcements - TabloTV Community from November 2024.

I’ve only had my Tablo since July and have had several issues. Is this product really that buggy and support usually that clueless?

Yes, and yes!
Tablo = Turd

So are you ever going to resolve this for Roku users???

Excellent write up. Sat morning issues. Sun morning worked normally. This morning back to the same ole issues. Offline mode required pop up even though my Internet is up. My Guide is Blank and if I open a Live Show / Channel from the Home screen I get the Exit back to Home page. It takes me several Save & Continue from the Channel Lineup to get the guide back. Once the Guide comes back … it seems to work normally for the rest of the day. I usually get up around 4 AM CST and this is when all these issues start.

I get the impression if it is having problems talking to the servers, it assumes it is offline. It should only trigger offline mode if some other check (just ping google or similar) also fails.

For some reason it seems the gen 4 architecture has requirements to phone home to tablo servers. This isn’t a fix to the gen 4 architecture but a shoehorn solution.

thus

When Tablo detects it doesn’t have an active connection to the internet or our servers, you’ll see a notification in your Tablo app that Offline Mode is required.

Well said, Zippy!

It comes down to App architecture.

Here’s an analogy from another DVR, TiVo.

TiVo back-end servers suffered a prolonged series of connectivity losses that prevented users’ TiVo boxes from reliably connecting to TiVo central.

Symptom: TiVo owners suddenly could not see their list of local recordings (similar to Tablo’s “Library” list), and thus couldn’t watch any recorded shows, since they couldn’t select them.

This fail revealed a poor design choice by TiVo developers, who had built in a requirement that every time a TiVo owner would launch their list of recordings inside stored folders, the TiVo box first had to contact TiVo’s back-end server farm, in real time, every single time. Naive, ridiculous choice that violated the principle of “robust” app design, did not anticipate how network connectivity fail would halt access to local recordings. Users had likely pre-approved such data collection in T&C agreements, but it shouldn’t have required real-time transmission each time - data could have been cached locally and sent to the server farm later when ready. The app design choice effectively turned TiVos into a brick when the server farm was not ready.

TiVo Community support group quickly found a workaround of unplugging TiVo’s ethernet cable, which instantly bypassed the real-time data requirement for some reason. (Since TiVo was HDMI connected to TV, network disconnect was feasible for that product.) Many TiVo owners used that workaround, reconnecting only to update our program guides.

History now, haven’t seen the TiVo symptom lately. Hopefully its app designers built in a better fail safe.

Offline mode should be transparent to the end user until they actually select a function that requires connection to the server. If you are simply browsing the live grid, and Tablo goes offline, a message should not come up until you select something that requires being online (selecting to watch a FAST channel), or maybe an unobtrusive warning icon can be displayed in the corner when it goes offline. This message box that comes up now that has to be acted on is just an unneeded annoyance.

Excellent, Khaver!

The Offline alert should also be very rarely seen, if one’s home network is stable. My good fortune that my block has newer local fiber optic with 99.9+% uptime. I subscribe to their 500 Mbps service. Cat 6 ethernet supports my 1 GB capacity LAN and my Tablo, Roku, and home theater devices. My LAN wireless is for phone and tablet, and those remain stable and conflict free.

After Tablo’s Offline Update push, I see daily Offline alerts which then almost immediately say I’m back Online, and the loop keeps repeating. Meanwhile everything else on home network remains stable, available, including my other Roku apps.

I think it’s fair to conclude one or both of these events recently happened:

  1. Tablo’s Offline update introduced a recurring false positive that can repeatedly loop.
  2. Tablo’s back-end servers suddenly started suffering a recurring comm blip for those of us affected by the Offline and other (App crash) bugs.

I’m guessing choice #1 based on the timing, but I can’t rule out choice #2.

For those like me that wound up here after looking for a simple list of compatible Roku devices, here’s the most recent article from the company (updated September-ish 2025)

Lol no kidding, its a dumpster fire, has been since day 1…

My ZapperBox is awesome tho :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Grateful to Tablo Support, received nice update to my Tablo ticket for the Online Update bug, which I described to them as in this thread, the App Crash and Offline/Online looping symptoms mostly occurring daily around 2AM-4+AM, Central.

Well, mine has gone from intermittent crashes to completely dead. No Live Guide and get errors selecting programs or channels from either the home screen or shows menu. Previously when I was having problems with one Roku others worked, but now all are dead. No response from Tablo support since they said my problem was solved by a surround sound update in November of last year.

Thanks mdavis0424! This maybe isn’t a match to yours but I ran into my own maybe slightly related fail just last night:

No new recordings. Library’s “Coming Soon” view showed:

No Scheduled Airings
Use the Live TV or Guide Screens to schedule airings

“Live” (Channels) was completely blank except for empty column headings for “Channels” Date, Time.

Antenna list (from last local scan) was still populated.

Program Guide was last updated more than 24 hours earlier. It showed: 0 %.

I clicked Update Guide Now. It sat there. No update.
Repeated. It sat there. No update.

I rebooted Tablo using the restart button, tried again to Update Guide Now.
It sat there. No update.

I rebooted again using restart button.
This time it accepted my Update Guide Now request and took 10-15 minutes to fully populate,

I relaunched my App. Then Coming Soon showed the expected upcoming recordings.

I selected a show listing in the now populated Live (Channels) Guide and was able to Record it.

My other 4th Gen Tablo was OK, still recording shows, except it couldn’t list one series’ title, just kept saying the word “Loading…” Following tip below, I went into App settings to reset Location (and chose a different metro area zip code from my town, to try to force a refresh). As per published tip, it then requested a new Channel Scan, which I gave it, and finally Coming Soon was able to list at stuck title.

4th Generation Tablo - How to Change or Edit Your Location

Nothing I did should have wiped my Program Guide, but I was lucky, after two reboots and two manual Update Guide Now attempts, to get that to repopulate and resume scheduled recordings.

Hope this helps. Hope you have luck getting it back online.

For Support to tell you they reached their limit for your problem, is unacceptable.
