Hmm… interesting. My complaint about FF/RW is from using the FF & RW buttons… not the blue buttons.
The way you describe it, it sounds like you have to do a button push for every time you advance to the next thumbnail. In the past, you could use the FF/RW buttons and it would start scrolling the thumbnails across the screen. Then, you could see the one you wanted coming, and when it was highlighted in the middle, you would simply push the Play/Pause button to resume from there.
The new way is it only displays a single thumbnail at the progress bar point. You don’t get to see the thumbnail that you want coming before it gets there. Therefore, you end up overshooting the desired re-entry point.
I will try the blue buttons when I get home tonight. If I understand you correctly, I still won’t like having to press the blue Right button over and over as well as how I’ve always done it. But, it might be a dirty workaround until they fix the FF/RW button function.
Have to agree with a lot of posts here that criticize the forward and back behavior. The new version is much “clickier”, requiring more clicks to skip commercials. The lack of thumbnails causes me to have to do more clicks, too. I suspect I’ll get used to it, but the new version doesn’t seem to be as streamlined for my particular usage. Also, the side navigation menu should “loop” – in other words, if at the bottom (Settings) and use the down arrow, focus should jump to the top.
I find the clock font so small I can’t read it, just takes up space.
I was one of the ones who suggested a clock on some screens, I need to be careful of what I wish for.
Am keeping my tall number LCD clock on the TV console.
The new update seems to be fine for me. The only complaint I have is my old eyes have trouble seeing the smaller icons during the fast forward operation. So my only recommendation on the next version would be to increase those a bit other than that well done Tablo!
I away’s used the right blue arrow button to skip through the thumbnails. I would click the button repeatedly and it would advance one thumbnail at a time. I did read someone say that in the older UI that if I would have just pressed and held the right blue arrow button that it would have advanced until the blue button was released. I didn’t know that so never tried that. .
So it turns out the new UI works exactly the way I’ve been using it all along. Click the right blue arrow button repeatedly until I get to the thumbnail I want. Sometimes I overshoot and have to back up with the left blue arrow button. Then I press the Home button to resume the playback. It’s worked fine that way for me.
I will use the FF/RW buttons if I want to scroll fast to a place somewhere in the playback to start watching.
But for commercial skipping I always use the blue arrow buttons.
Was really enjoying my Tablo, being able to forward to skip commercials. The newest change now only moves one frame per button push. That took away the best feature. Anyone else have this issue?
I am new to Tablo. I installed on various Roku devices and even purchased latest Roku 4K stick. All devices simply stall on searching for Tablo. Runnng version 1.0 of Tablo app. My iPhone can connect to Tablo device just fine. All devices are on the same network over WiFi. Why won’t the Tablo App on Roku find the Tablo device?
This sounds like a network issue. It requires a pretty robust connection, more so than does Netflix, Hulu, etc. How far are your viewing stations from the router? Are there many obstructions…thick walls; plumbing; furnace? If you can move a viewing station closer to the router, does it connect?
Also, if possible, Ethernet is better than WiFi, especially for the connection between the Tablo itself and the router.
Yes, I am using the dark blue app. I have gone through all the trouble shooting steps defined by Tablo. I have briefly heard back from tech support and they have asked for patience while they work the issue. Hopefully they will not take too long.
Ok - Now I see what the issue is. The new UI ONLY has individual thumbnails - you click or advance one at a time. The old UI had the thumbnails in a ribbon so you could see lots of thumbnails forward and back to know where to stop to resume the playback.
Yes, I would agree that the ribbon thumbnails were MUCH better.
Enter Tablo from the Roku home screen. On the previous release, movement was horizontal,
Home>Live>shows>movies>Sports.
I would stop on Movies and press the down navigation button twice for Genre, This was great.
Or
Press the down navigation button three times and land on Channels. There, all of the channels are listed in order. I would scroll down to my favorite movie channel and select it. The whole world would open up for me at once. Every movie that will play on that channel for the next 2 weeks, listed in alpha/numeric order. I could browse thru every movie and pick out the ones that I might want to record. I might as well not have a 2 week guide without this feature.
I looked everywhere on 1.0.0 for the feature. At one point a light bulb went off and I decided to scroll down to movies and press the left navigation button hoping that the channels were hiding off the screen to the left. No such luck.
Update: Works well with Roku Ultra 4800R. App launches faster, more reliably.
Learning curve is finally kicking in for extra keystrokes now required to navigate - but don’t agree with having more keystrokes required.
Highlights:
Thumbnail size, position
Thumbnail appears smaller, less easy to view its content
“Film strip” (preview) is greatly missed. Preview made navigation a breeze. Please bring back some kind of preview.
Thumbnail now slides, left-right. While it’s “spashy” to have a moving thumbnail, moving it downgrades user experience by adding visual fatigue to spot its location first, then view the smaller screen to navigate. Keep it fixed, not mobile.
You’ve doubled the button clicks needed to perform the most constantly used task
Double button click now required, 1. first a brand new click to launch the timeline bar,
2. then the usual left or right click to navigate.
Sounds minor, but multiply this multiple times for every show, the most heavily used Tablo function. Needless double clicking, every time.
Left-Right button needs “Repeat-on-Hold” brought back
Navigation requires either:
Fast Forward / Reverse - but this moves very fast, chronically overskips the desired stop point, then must rewind to correct the overskip, then FF again to re-correct, sometimes multiple tries.
OR
Left-Right button - but now it’s dumbed down to single-move. Needs to have Repeat-on-Hold brought back, to make it usable - as others here have also requested
Library bug increases the risk of deleting the wrong recording
Exiting a recording from Yesterday or earlier, the Library immediately selects a “Today” row recording instead of the one just exited - greatly increasing the risk of too easily picking the “Today” row show for deletion, instead of the one just viewed and exited. This intermittent bug is triggered by clicking Down any time during view (which launches “Channels, Recordings, Up Next, Info” panel) before exiting. Once exited, Library re-homes to “Today” instead of viewer’s actively selected show. Requested Fix: have Library mark as its active choice the show that was last exited.
Restore the feature that lets you start viewing a recording from the Library by pressing Play
As suggested by another commenter, I, too, used this feature in a prior version and was disappointed it was not carried forward.
Rare blip with playbacks UPDATE:Resolved in Roku by disabling automatic frame rate detection in System settings, a reasonable workaround. Rare video blip, screen goes black for a few seconds in some segments like opening credits of this season’s SNL or certain HD animated screen logos. Trouble outputting video detail in certain complex sequences. Occurs with Roku, not LG’s Tablo app.
