Tablo Roku App (4th Gen) Update (v. 1.0.0 & 1.0.1)

@CuriousB,
Thank you for your input sir. I’m going to try an Express 4K device.
You’re right, of course, about wifi access point placement, but that was suggested by Tablo Support months ago and I’ve already moved it to a location that gives both TVs an “excellent” signal quality report.
I am going to move the older Roku to the upstairs TV, just to be sure before buying any new hardware.
Thanks again for you input.

@Scandy,
Yes, I did try both bands. Both gave me the same performance. I returned to the 2.4GHz because you are absolutely right. All else being the same, lower frequencies travel farther.
Thank you for your input.

Each button push advances 10 seconds. Current time shown then advance four minutes. Some shows have identifyer in upper left corner showing when show is back. I wish Tablo could add a delayed start longer than minutes. PGA runs over 42 minutes last 2 weeks. So recording 60 minutes instead of Tracker isn’t so great.

Just to be precise. I have 5 TVs on Rokus, three are Ultras with hardwired Ethernet. The other two are Roku Express 4k+ units operating over WiFi. The Roku Express 4k+ model is 3941X2.

These Roku’s work great for me. I have them on Samsung TVs when I gave up on the feeble Tablo app running on Samsung’s TV OS. It was too frustrating using that software and now I am on discrete Roku units life got a whole lot better.

A few more things about WiFi;

  1. Inches matter at these wavelengths. A few inches either way or an axis rotation (just rotate the device 90 degrees) can mean the difference between good and poor signal. Don’t be afraid to experiment.
  2. The main access point (AP) should be as high as practical. I have mine hidden above a kitchen cabinet central to the home. My wife put some (non-metallic) trinkets around it so you can’t even tell it is there.
  3. Poor performance could be co channel interference. That is when two AP devices are broadcasting on the same channel and the signal for each at your Roku is within a few dB of each other. I use Acrylic free WiFi mapping software on my laptop to scan the WiFi spectrum. There are many other similar programs. You might be surprised to find that you have a couple APs in your home on the same channel. Or maybe a device you didn’t know that had an AP in it (like Comcast sneaking a public WiFi AP in your cable modem) or your neighbors are basting signal into your space. Either way, a scanning program will let you see where there are problems and what channel to move your AP to to avoid such interference issues.

CuriousB,
My likelihood to think any of this is about wifi is out the window. Both TVs had the same 10th generation Roku Express and both exhibited the same symptoms even though both reported excellent signal quality. I spent a lot of time trying everything that I could think of and everything Tablo Support could think of … there would have been some symptom change with all the troubleshooting we did back in November. Nothing I did back then made a bit of difference.
You’re right about that. Comcast (aka Xfinity) likes to sneak in public wifi … I’ve got that turned down to microwatts. My sniffer barely hears it when its in the same room as the Xfinity gateway. I can hear a couple of the neighbors wifi signals. None of them are very strong. There are no other APs in the house.
Thank you for your suggestions. I’ve been working on this for months. Tablo and I have thought of all of this. I really do appreciate your consideration.
Since putting in the old 5th generation device and it working, I now believe that it’s a hardware issue. Your assertion that Roku Express 4K gets the job done is good enough for me. I’m going to try that.
Thanks again.

CuriousB,
While writing my previous message to you, I got an email from Tablo. They are going to declare the Roku streaming Stick and the Roku Express to be “not supported.”
I think this is the right decision. As I said, I believe what I have here is a hardware issue. My Roku devices just don’t have the stones to get this done.

I can’t say that I blame them. The technology in some of those devices is really dated. I have a few older ones. If they stop supporting them, I will upgrade the Roku. They are relatively cheap, especially considering that Tablo has saved me about $1500.00 so far since cancelling DirecTV.

As I noted in another thread, Roku just announced two new stick models that can be powered by most TV’s USB ports.

Another thought. I deleted all the unused apps and turned off all the information sections on roku. All that shows on the homepage are the 4-5 apps I actually use. This might reduce CPU load marginally but increase memory availability. You could give it a try before you bin those units and get new ones. I don’t think this will be the breakthrough you need but its easy enough to try.

In any event these devices aren’t expensive and when you consider how much utilization they provide its not unreasonable to upgrade to newer units.

@TabloTV Are you investigating this issue?
There is a new problem with this release. When viewing recorded shows the Tablo App intermittently ignores button presses on the Roku remote. You can’t pause, fast forward or rewind. The only way I can get those actions back is to terminate the Tablo app by hitting the Roku Home button. Then restart the Tablo app, go to recordings and resume the recording I was watching. It at least lets me resume so I don’t have to manually search for where I was at in the recording. This has happened on multiple Roku models. I did not see this on version 1.0.0 before it broke.

Ever since the 1.0.1 update, I’ve had to uninstall and reinstall the app for my 4th gen on both Roku devices I have to access the app. After exiting and reopening the app I get stuck on the “Connecting” page, just like it was before last weeks hotfix was released and can’t get the app to work without reinstalling. Has anyone run into this before or have suggestions to try and solve this problem?

I have a Roku streaming stick+ 3810x running 14.1. build 7709 as well as a TCL Roku TV model 65R625, hardware ID A108X running software 14.1. I also have a fire stick and android device that have worked flawlessly throughout the time this has been a problem on my Rokus.

I started seeing this today on my Roku Ultra (1.0.1 update installed) as well. Just went and reset the Tablo and that resolved the issue. I forgot to check if my Firecube 2nd Gens or androids were having issues, sorry.

I am seeing the same problem here with my Roku ultra especially if I pause a program for a short period of time and then try to start back up. All the buttons forward, reverse, etc. do not work. I have to exit the app go back in and then all is fine. This is a new problem in the latest release.

Thanks for the suggestion. Have rebooted the Tablo and my router with no change. Support has been responsive at least and is working on it.

After 2 years of trying to cope with this giant pile of garbage on my Roku Ultra, it still does not work in any sane fashion.

Exit the functioning app? No problem!
Oops, meant to tune in a different show!
Re-open the TabloTV app? Sure. Maybe.
Display the guide again? No.
Display ‘shows’? No.

Reboot the Roku? Yup. Does not help.
Reboot the Tablo? Yup. Does not help.

You know how often I have this problem with say, Amazon Prime on Roku?
Or Pluto?
Or Fawsome?
Or anything else?

Never. Only TabloTV.

Congratulations, you’re truly in a class by yourselves.

I cannot complain about my 4th gen Tablo. I wish I had known about it a year ago. I could have saved $1000 in cable bills. I just cancelled cable and re-did my internet and am saving $85/mo plus I have double the internet speed at 450mbps.

Except when the servers were down (and no way to know that, one of my only complaints) it has been great. I have it loaded on 2 iPhones, 2 iPads, a 2018 Sony Bravia Smart TV, a 2020 Samsung QLED TV and 3 Rokus, a 2024 Ultra, a 2017 Ultra and a Roku3. Once the 1.0.1 came out they have been rock solid. If your Tablo doesn’t work, maybe it is just plain defective. It’s easy enough to get another one and if it still doesn’t work, send it back. They have a year warranty.

In fact, and I am at a total loss how this worked, but our local ABC OTA station had 4 shows preempted for a live Draft broadcast. My wife was pissed. We assumed the Tablo would record the same show that OTA was broadcasting. Imagine our surprise when we went on to Tablo and it was recording the correct shows!! Somehow Tablo found the real show that were preempted locally and recorded the scheduled ones! That’s amazing.

Just FYI. All five of my Roku units kicked over to S/W Version: 14.5.4 Build: 5944 last night. Prior to that only one had done so about 2 weeks ago.

No problems to report so far.

My wife said this same concern.

FYI there is a usability issue now that wasn’t there before. Often, but not always when watching a recording from your Library, when you click the back button to return to the library it often goes to the first recording in the Library instead of the recording you were just watching.

My wife already accidentally deleted the wrong recording because she pressed the back button and then deleted the recording thinking it was the one she was just watching.

The back button should bring you to your current recording and not to the top of Library.
