Wasn’t the roku 4 the only roku with a built in fan. And if so didn’t the fan tend to stop working which resulted in the unit overheating.
It’s too bad that the FF thumbnails only work when the program is completely recorded. I assume there is a technical reason for that? Even if you start watching an hour show with 5 minutes left, there are no thumbnails, unless you leave the app after the show has finished recording, and then go back in. The wife loves the thumbnails for skipping commercials and storylines she doesn’t care about.
Ever since the 1.0.1 update, I’ve had to uninstall and reinstall the app for my 4th gen on both Roku devices I have to access the app. After exiting and reopening the app I get stuck on the “Connecting” page, just like it was before last weeks hotfix was released and can’t get the app to work without reinstalling. Has anyone run into this before or have suggestions to try and solve this problem?
I have a Roku streaming stick+ 3810x running 14.1. build 7709 as well as a TCL Roku TV model 65R625, hardware ID A108X running software 14.1. I also have a fire stick and android device that have worked flawlessly throughout the time this has been a problem on my Rokus.
On Android based devices, like the ONN, you can have problems if you use the “Home” button to exit Tablo. The next time you try to launch Tablo it will often fail. INSTEAD, click the “Exit” button (usually a left arrow ←) several times until it asks if you want to exit the app. Doing this closes the app properly and it will launch correctly the next time.
I have found recently that the app on Roku can be very slow loading. Using this same method of Exiting out seems to help. Also, if the app on Roku is already slow loading, clicking the Exit button to close it, will usually allow you to immediately reload the app very quickly.
Thanks for the suggestion. Tried it out and still can’t get back in when clicking the Exit button. Still goes back to the infinite “Connecting to your Tablo” scroll unless I delete the app and reinstall it.
We’ll pull this thread to the larger one.
Would you consider contacting our technical support team? They may be able to help. If you do be sure to let them know you’re using Roku 1.0.1 and share your Tablo’s SID.
Nothing fixed here. Same problem I had a couple of months ago is still here. Live or recorded content from broadcast TV channels on Roku is unwatchable. I can watch on my phone or tablets, but not on Roku devices on my TVs. I believe this is about the Roku app because I took my device to my brother’s house where he has a non-Roku TV w/ a Tablo app and it worked perfectly. When I got the message a few days ago that they though the Roku app was fixed I had some hope, but … nope.
Hello Randall, and welcome to the community. Would you mind providing a little more detail about what you mean by unwatchable? Would you also share what model of Roku you have and how it’s connected to your network? It seems like Tablo needs a high bandwidth connection, which your phone may have, and having a great connection by your Roku is paramount to smooth viewing on your TV.
Wysiwyg,
Of course. Content (live or recorded) via the antenna freezes every few seconds and in between it’s highly pixelated. Sound is ok. I can watch and record Tablo streaming content. I can watch live and recorded broadcast TV on my phone or tablets through the Tablo.
All network connections are wired on both Tablo and the TVs. Gigabit network.
To my knowledge all Roku devices are WiFi. 5 GHz connection right now, but I’ve tried it both ways.
That I can watch live and recorded broadcast TV on my table and phones makes me believe that it’s just the Roku app. In fact I took the Tablo device to my brother’s house to his non-Roku TV, install the Tablo app on his TV and the device performed perfectly. I could watch live and recorded broadcast television perfectly.
Roku Tablo app version is 1.01 - 734366 (Latest version it says)
Roku model 3960S2
Roku OS 14.1.4
Tablo serial number SID_5087B852525B
Tablo Firmware 2.2.54 (Latest version it says.)
At your service …
Randall Jones
Thanks for the info. It seems like that Roku Express, even though it’s relatively new and works on 2.4 and 5 GHz, is only Wifi4 according to this page. Roku - Wikipedia
Wifi4 is capable of speeds up to 600 Mbit, but this may be in ideal conditions.
I’m going by the model 3960 but your S2 might be an updated version. You might still consider updating that device.
I have that model and same problem. It doesn’t have enough ram. Fireatick 4k and a Roku Ultra from 2022 work well. I have the Roku Express for basic streaming which it works well. I wish Tablo would have a better minimum requirement listed as this has come up several times now.
Not pleased with this new update. I liked how I could hit the single arrow button to scroll forward. Now I have to tap tap tap. The second problem that I’m not pleased with was the screen that said that it couldn’t find the Tablo with the large QR code. I did end up using the Ipad app after rebooting the Roku, router and Tablo but discovered that all of the OTA channels were gone! A rescan fixed that problem which apparently fixed the No Tablo Found message on the Roku. So the tip here is check to see if you still have OTA channels if the Roku app states it can’t find the Tablo. This all appeared to occur after 4/17 so I’m guessing the server problem that occurred on the Tablo side was the cause of the loss of channels. :-{
I don’t know how willing I am to spend a bunch of money on an Easter Egg hunt to find a device that will work. Besides … something new has come to light.
A month or so ago I’m poking around in a “junk” drawer and I found an old Roku device. It’s old, it’s slow and it’s unreliable (I was having to power cycle it far too frequently.) I had replaced it just before I tried the first Tablo device back in Nov. '24.
So, today I pulled out the newer Roku device and replaced it with the old … and can you guess what happened? I can now watch a recorded show. I can now watch live broadcast television through the Tablo.
This is an old 3710 device. 3710RW (I don’t know what the RW stands for.)
It’s 2.4 GHz WiFi4 only. It has less storage than the newer device. But it works!
The TV upstairs still has the 3960 Roku and is still unwatchable, but in my shack … the Tablo works.
I don’t know what to do with this information. The older, slower, less capable Roku works with the Tablo while the newer, faster, more capable does not.
So … what do I do now? Will the Roku Express 4K work? I think you guys should go out and get every 10th (or whatever) generation Roku device and test them. Let me know what works and what doesn’t. You could then publish this info with the product requirement and save the next guy a lot of time, trouble and frustration.
Have you guys been able to recreate this problem?
I don’t think it’s RAM. I don’t know what it is, but as you may have seen from my other update this evening … an older, slower and less capable Roku device is working with the Tablo.
Thanks for replying.
I have a new Roku express 4K and it works fine. Seems like your two location might have much different WiFi signal quality. Try the newer one (swap them) where you have the older Roku to see if location gets the newer Roku working. Then if it does explore options to improve WiFi signal in the poor location.
One of the best things you can do for WiFi, for zero cost, is get your router as high up as practical. So many are on or near the floor, put it up high on top of a cabinet or something like that,
I agree with @CuriousB that it could be your wifi quality. But, based on your test that it’s working with the older device, I’m not so sure.
Personally, I’d update my device(s) to ensure I’m receiving the fastest/best signal. Roku makes up +40% of the streaming device market. So it should be a no-brainer to go that way. However, our Tablo experience on the Roku has started to look like the Fire Stick TV, which we’re not pleased with.
100% My 8+ year old Netgear R6400 has given me no problems. It is clearly the the most reliable device in my house. The instructions specifically said to place it as high up as possible. Higher than any device that will connect to it. It’s been up on top of a hutch hiding behind fake plants in our living room in our single story home. It’s also plugged into a UPS.
Use the FF button. Press FF additional times to speed it up.
@RandallMJones You said your old Roku worked using the 2.4GHz network. Did you try using 2.4GHz with the newer Roku? (The 2.4GHz signal is slower but can travel farther and is better at going thru walls and other obstructions).
Wysiwyg,
@CuriousB is certainly correct about wifi access point placement. (I’ll reply to him here in a bit.) Unfortunately, that was suggested back in Nov. and the access point now, while not above the upstairs TV, is only a few feet away. Both TVs have full bars / excellent signal quality.
Until yesterday, both TVs had the same model of Roku devices and both exhibited the same symptoms. I hadn’t consider that it could be the device model hardware until now. Both devices were nearly new and both performed flawlessly for everything except Tablo. From a troubleshooting perspective this doesn’t say to me “something must be wrong with the Roku” but now there’s this new information.
@CuriousB has also reported that he’s having good performance with an Express 4K. That gives me some hope that a solution may be possible.
So … Unless new information comes my way (and soon) the 4K device will probably be my next step. If something new presents itself, please let me know. Thank you for your help.
