Tablo Roku App (4th Gen) Update (v. 0.8.900 + v. 0.9.000)

Hi folks -

An update is now available for the newest Tablo Roku Channel for 4th generation Tablo devices.

This includes changes for Roku users experiencing issues with playback caused by the Roku OS 14 update.

Here’s what you can expect:

Tablo Roku App (4th Gen) Update (v. 0.8.900)

  • Adds Audio Compatibility Mode setting to assist users experiencing playback issues caused by the Roku OS 14 update (requires 2.2.54 firmware)
  • Adds several UI and navigational improvements
  • Fix to ensure playback position is maintained when resuming an in-progress recording
  • Fix for issue where airing times were incorrectly displayed
  • Bug fixes and performance improvements

NOTE - Audio Compatibility Mode requires Tablo firmware 2.2.54. Your Tablo will be eligible to receive this update before the end of December.

Tablo Roku App (4th Gen) Update (v. 0.9.000)

  • Small fix to ensure Audio Compatibility Mode is only visible to users with the minimum required firmware (2.2.54)

About This Release

Users affected by playback issues caused by the Roku OS 14 update should process the 2.2.54 firmware update as soon as it is offered to your Tablo device.

Once you have updated to the 2.2.54 Tablo firmware, and your Tablo app on Roku has updated to version 0.8.900, the new Audio Compatibility Mode toggle will be visible in the SETTINGS screen.

This will allow affected Roku devices to play live TV and NEW recordings from Tablo again.

Until you have updated to 2.2.54, you WILL NOT be able to see the toggle.

(NOTE - Recordings previously created in Surround Sound (AC3) WILL NOT be converted to Stereo Sound (AAC) once this setting is enabled, nor will they be converted from Stereo to Surround Sound should the setting be disabled.)

To learn more about this setting and how it works, check out this Knowledge Base article:

If you have questions about how enabling Audio Compatibility Mode will affect old and new recordings, please consult the chart below.

Users who did not experience playback issues on any of their Roku devices should leave Audio Compatibility Mode set to OFF.

As always, if you have any questions or encounter any problems, feel free to post them below or touch base directly with support .

Did the firmware update. Put the audio com on, then tried it off, same shit different day. Try to play something and it goes back to the menu. I knew it was too good to be true. And yes the Roku app is 8.900

Hi @Michael_Legge,

So just to clarify, you updated the firmware to 2.2.54, updated the Roku app to 0.8.900, and turned the Audio Compatibility mode toggle to ON? And then from there, you tried to play an OTA channel and it still didn’t work?

This is just to make sure of your steps.

Yes. Double checked all the versions and they,re correct.

Update. I checked live tv and that does work now. However I never watch live tv. My recordings are still not playing. They were recorded before the firmware update. Does that make sense?

Ah yes. Unfortunately, this is not a retroactive change, as recordings made in the past will have already been be recorded with AC3 (Surround) audio already.

But all newly made ones from this point on should work.

Ok. I get it now. I’ll delete the old ones and start anew. Thanks!

That is good to know. It is unfortunate, but I get it.

Is there an update coming for the Legacy Tablos?

Is there any fix on the LIve and Recording playback issue on Roku for legacy Tablos?

Is there a way to force the latest firmware? I’m on 2.2.52, not .54, and get video with live tv, but no audio. App version 0.8.900-734366, Roku Stick 4k model 3820R2, OS 14.0.4

Cannot toggle audio comp. mode to On.

On my system, most, but not all of my Roku are working with the audio-setting-change workaround. Two do not work and are waiting for the pending update. I understand that once that is available, and I toggle the setting for Audio Compatibility Mode (ACM) these two should start working, HOWEVER, recordings that predate the ACM change WILL NOT play correctly on these two Roku.

HERE IS MY QUESTION, will those older recordings still work on the other Roku that are not experiencing this problem, or were corrected via the workaround that we have been using for several weeks? I’m hoping not to lose my whole library just to fix two lesser-used TVs.

It would be helfpul if users had the ability to force a firmware update.

Reset the Tablo with the button on the bottom of the device. Finally fixed after seven weeks!

There is a “Check for Firmware Update” function in the settings. I tried it, but it told me that my system was up to date even though I am running 2.2.52, not 54. It seems to be made available on a rolling schedule.

So my recordings of shows that are not available ANYWHERE VOD without charge are just garbage?? Is there any plan to make a patch to be able to view these at sometime in the future? I haven’t done the update yet but I can say that I am already less than satisfied with the “solution”. For each month that this disconnect between recording/playback for Tablo/Roku, I have had to pay $70 for a streaming service to watch network shows. I will NEVER recommend a Tablo to anyone.

You recordings should be good, just not on your Roku (it was Roku who broke this). If you have a newer Roku they will likely play. Also, for about $30.00 you could get an ONN streaming device. They should play fine on those.

Again, this problem is mostly older Roku with older or lower-end TVs. In my house I have six different Roku/TV combinations, some older equipment…some newer. The older recordings work just fine on all except for two of my setups.

I have three Roku‘s 3930x with the same problem. Whether I’m watching a recording, or watching live TV, the app starts buffering and then continues on with the show. I have three fire sticks in the house and they are fine with no issues at all using the same hardware and Wi-Fi connection. This only started after the Roku updates. Anyone else having problems like this?

Those 3930’s are already 5 years old. That’s like 100 in human years. They only support 802.11n wifi. Depending on your home network configuration (router, Internet speed, other device ages), you might consider upgrading one of those older Roku to the latest Roku 4850X that works with Wifi6 (ax) to see if it improves.

That is true but they are still supported by Roku with updates so they are not obsolete. They started acting up after this update so I thought it was worth mentioning. The fire stick is far superior in features and performance so that will be what I purchase in the future if needed.
