Where to get the legacy app?Mr.Tablo
Hi @kajak,
This article should help: https://support.tablotv.com/hc/en-us/articles/14244078418068-How-to-Find-and-Install-the-Tablo-App-on-Your-Device
The new app definitely has library loading issues that have not been addressed yet.
It’s also horrible on an AppleTV and Samsung TV.
I don’t like the gen4 interface and commercial skip is important to me. Luckily, I also have a lifetime Plex pass with a 4 tuner DVR configured. I will migrate all my scheduled recordings to Plex and run in parallel for some period of time before Tablo kills commercial skip entirely. It’s sad that it’s ending this way as the ease of use of the Legacy Tablo is (was) great. For those considering migrating to Plex, it is just a bit more finicky than Tablo and has it’s own corporate issues and a lifetime Plex pass is now steep and getting much steeper soon.
I thought I would come here and point out what I thought was obvious to most but apparently it isn’t. I have already (and suggest others do the same) downloaded and backed up the Tablo legacy apk’s that my system is currently using. Then in the future I can sideload them back to my streaming devices if a mistake happens and one gets deleted or a streaming device breaks and I replace it. Those apk’s are abundantly available online — BUT – make sure to virus total any downloads to verify they are 100% pure and ready.
Tablo — are you placing any obstacles intentionally in the way to prevent sideloaded apk’s that are then installed on streamers from working? I admin and sideload most of my apks where I control and verify their purity. Just saying!
For those of us who continue to use the legacy Tablo app for Tablo Connect remote access, will the Tablo servers remain functional after September 1, 2026 and if yes, for how long?
You will get amazingly better performance and dependability if you learn to access your Tablo, even the new Gen 4 models via a VPN to your home router. Its much faster and is soooooo dependable. It is always works. I deleted my remote connection on my legacy because the vpn is just light years better and faster.
We’re not doing anything to prevent that but some platforms, like Amazon Fire TV, are taking steps to do so. They’re not steps we’d recommend because it’s not easy for non-tech savvy users and there are security risks, as you have mentioned.
Hi @Stephen_Hiu ,
You should be able to use Tablo Connect as long as your apps work and you have a TV Guide Data service subcription.
While you won’t be able to download fresh copies of the app, we have no plans to make the apps you already have non-functional.
By the way ---------------------------- > I wanted to mention that the new Tablo app/apk version 2.1 works GREAT with legacy Tablo devices. You don’t need to worry about using that new app and it will remain available and even likely get updated over time. The graphics are far superior to the “white” legacy app. I love the look of the newer software and it runs QUICK and smooth.
If I wasn’t a long time user with paid “Commercial Skip” I would immediately be using ONLY the newer 2.1 because it rocks!!
Absent CS the newer 2.1 is the way to go. As mentioned above; I use a super fast Wireguard tunnel to my router so remote is way faster and better than the “old school” approach for legacy remote connections.
Good job Tablo. The software looks amazing and WOW is it fast on my end! For now I am not making the Gen 4 transition, but that is coming!!
hehehe,
That is why I left Firesticks for my power user needs, but still use just a few in the bedrooms for normal residential use. Linux computers running Android give me the steering wheel back and I fully control what gets used, installed, etc… Little bit of a rebel I guess. Its how I roll!
Came here to say the same.
While I understand where you are coming from, “only a few years ago” is 5 years ago based on the date on that invoice.
Based on the fact the guide service has been $50/year for a while, you broke even two years ago with the lifetime service. So if their intent is to NOT require a separate guide service fee going forward, what is it exactly that you lost?
The 4th gen app no longer requires a separate subscription fee for the guide.
We purchased Tablo for one thing: commercial skip.
I don’t consider it breaking even when a company offers a “lifetime” subscription to something they know they’re about to kill in every way:
-The app that enables its playback is no longer supported.
-The legacy unit it’s attached to is no longer going to get firmware updates.
-You can’t transfer the lifetime service to a new device.
This is similar to when SONOS tried to brick all their original speakers by changing the controller/player app, because it’s effectively pushing legacy users to upgrade by slowly pulling all their resources.
This is a trend and it shouldn’t be acceptable to buyers.
Tablo Mgmt,
Trying to make sure I understand a simple thing about when I use the “black” newer 2.1 app version with my legacy Tablo Quad.
As mentioned above the graphics are awesome and the live guide page looks robust and is flat out nice. However; since I have not completed the migration to Gen 4 (due to the commercial skip feature use being desired until it sunsets approximately at the end of the year), is version 2.1 filling in the two week guide based upon my current subscription under my legacy paid model — OR – is the two week guide being filled in by the same method as those that have migrated to the Gen 4 setup?
Fair points, and I’ve never paid for the commercial skip, but is it included in your lifetime guide subscription?
Nope, been paying for both services since Tablo began.
It was an extra $20/yr. We paid $150 in 2021 for lifetime premium service.
That’s in addition to/separate from guide services.
We’re early adopters, but that doesn’t mean much to companies anymore.
Ya, I seem to remember the commercial skip premium service was an additional cost. We paid for the lifetime guide back in 2015 but never saw the need for commercial skip as long as we could FF>> through them in recordings.
We got >10 yrs out of it so we’re not expecting a discount or refund of the guide lifetime subscription.
Commercial skip may be a different story b/c, unlike the free guide, it isn’t available in the Gen4.
I understand the unfair feeling when you pay for something, and then later on it’s a lower price, or even free.
However, there’s no loss in the service you paid for.
It’s just free now, when using gen 4 apps.
I paid for the lifetime guide subscription, too.
I’ll complain in the future, if they start charging for guide subscriptions again for even lifetime guide subscribers.
