Roku Tablo 4th Gen App Update (v. 0.8.700 and 0.8.701)

Tablo announced they recently added another bug to their Roku app.

Moved this thread here just to keep everything in one place.

Very complex TV household - 4 big users plus me, but I’m tech support. ROKU is not wonderful, but family is used to it - lots of premium channels/movies. Goal is to eliminate DirecTV which now only my wife uses. Got the new Tablo 4th Gen dual, and got to learn all about OTA antennas and such - easier than I feared. Successfully set up Tablo with android phone, but many of the same problems as listed in this thread at the various Roku TVs. Household Rokus are an assortment of sticks of varying vintage, all doing their Roku job just fine. Tablo problem symptoms varied between the sticks, but none were fully successful. Decided to buy a brand-new Roku 4k. Just installed it and it works just fine with TabloTV app - live and recordings. Also bought a FireStick4k which also works just fine.

Problem seems to be that there have been a lot of Roku models over the years and they have subtle differences that the Roku TabloTV app just can’t resolve. Rather than spending hours debugging Tablo/Roku issues, it seems most practical to replace the Rokus on each TV. Even though several TVs are “smart”, family is just happy with Roku interface.

Now I have to go through the premium account authorizations again, which seem to vary between services.

Good luck to everyone, and thanks for playing.

Glad to hear you’ve got your Tablo up and running. You’re definitely right about each Roku model having their own issues. I haven’t had many issues with the latest 0.8.700 update, but it would be great if that next update that’s coming soon would fix the live guide return issue!

As a curiosity, is the firestick 4k a max? I’ve seen numerous problems with the regular firestick 4k, but there’s also been a few OS updates since then. Both my 1st gen and 2nd gen Firestick 4k Max work great with the 4th Gen Tablo.

I know I’m only one of many who appreciate how you’ve looked into your own equipment and decided it needed upgrading. This willingness will help you in the future if there are other issues!

Happy Tablo-ing!

The FireTVstick just says “FireTVStick 4K” and they were on a real sale at Fred Meyer (a sort of a K-Mart if you aren’t west coast). The list price claimed to be $49 on sale for $32, but checked out at $20. I really just got it just to compare to the Roku For what it is worth, the bar-code area says UPC 840268929909. I only ran it long enough to see that it saw and played the couple of shows I had recorded and did the live tv channels correctly. None of my existing Rokus could do that. A couple of the family tvs are smart ones, so I will check them out also.

Call them and see if they will take it back and give you one of the refurb legacy model they sell. As long as no MPEG4 stations in your area you care about, you will be happy with it.

Well, that didn’t last long. Tablo 4th gen, newly purchased Roku Streaming Stick 4k. Worked fine for a couple of days, then this morning it can play recorded things just fine, but the Tablo app crashes back to Roku home screen when I select “live” and make one move down towards the schedule. I saw this with other older Rokus I have and I thought that getting the newest version was what I needed. It definitely DID work for 2-3 days of testing. I am now going around unplugging various pieces and letting them reboot, but no luck so far. I don’t THINK Roku or Tablo or anything else did updates in the last day or so, but I should have recorded every OS/firmware version number of everything involved (Tablo,WiFi Eero mesh extender, internet modem, Roku version…) Way more complicated than it should be. Guess I need to put the FireTV stick back in and see if it is still solid.

The FireTV stick still works (reasonably) sensibly. Maybe it is familiarity, but the app seems to get stuck in live mode and the only way (I think) I was able to get back out of the live mode was to unplug the FireTV stick for a few seconds. I am impressed with the potential of 4th Gen Tablo, and the price is excellent, but I’m not sure it is quite ready for prime time. We can probably return some DirecTV pieces and get the $130 bill down to less than $100, but I can’t tell my wife it is time to cancel it yet. For us, Roku app is essential. I guess I just have to wait and see if they can fix the bugs.

This may sound strange, but I felt like my Tablo had to “break in.” I, too, have a variety of Roku of various vintage. The newer and higher-end ones obviously work better, but even the older ones seemed to improve and become more stable over time. I can’t explain it. It does not correspond to updates. So…give it some time.

Tablo has been pretty straight forward about some of the problems with the most recent update. They expect to have a fix soon.

Also, reading a lot of comment on this forum, it seems that most of the complaints are with Roku. That may be in part because they have the most users by a wide margin. Also, they update their software frequently which can screw with app developers’ minds. I hear a lot of good things about ONN’s streaming device with Tablo. I may give one a try.

Seems that after my ROKU TV update 8/6/24 13.1.4 or perhaps some other event, today I cannot access live TV from the Live list, recorded shows are accessible, shows that are currently available on the Home screen are also accessible. Am confused.

We’ve moved this thread here so we can keep track of everything related to this update.

This is something we’re aware of and are working hard to fix.

Sure hope that “focus-always-goes-to-same-spot-when-returning-to-the-live-grid” problem is on the list to fix with the next update, 'cause this latest one didn’t fix it.

I’ve been posting my testing on a couple of threads here. It doesn’t seem “rare”, and it seems to happen of several Roku models - 4810 and 4820. I agree that it isn’t consistent, the same Roku stick can operate correctly for periods of time, then suddenly, the guide crash. Repeated rerunning the TabloTV app generally gets the same failure again immediately. Sometimes unplugging and unpowering the Roku seems to help, but sometimes not. It is not rare.

Hey folks. Roku Hotfix 0.8.701 is live. It has a fix for the Live grid crash that’s been recently reported.

For those of you who have experienced this, make sure to update and give it a try, and let us know if the issue has been resolved!

Glad to hear that issue has been resolved. I had originally wondered if this grid crash was related to how it defaults back to the top-left of the grid after exiting live playback. Hopefully, that will be fixed in the next update!

Keep up the good work – each app update (all but one…) has brought some major improvements!

The hotfix fixed it for me. Thanks to the team for fixing it!

So far, 0.8.701 seems to be working well on all my various Roku devices.

The crash issue seems to be fixed but there other issues on Roku that hopefully will get fixed. The left arrow key during live playback still goes back to the top of the guide (as 269597 said). FAST channels do not work very well (how do you get a Weak Signal error on a streaming channel?). Also FAST channels sometimes fail to record. I also occasionally get an audio-video sync mismatch on OTA channels that I can only fix by rebooting the Tablo, not the Roku (firmware problem?).

@TabloTV, @TabloEngineering
I’m using the latest TabloTV app on my Roku Streaming Stick 4k (3820X), with Roku OS version 14.0.4, build 12205.

Today I noticed that the times progress bar are not numbers. Because I rarely use my Roku I cannot say how long ago this started. I have tried multiple recordings and two Tablos (2-tuner, 4-tuner – both using external drives)… both have the same issue. Is anyone else experiencing this?

All of my Roku’s are running Roku OS 13.1.4. maybe it’s because you are running 14.0.1.
