NEW - Tablo (4th Gen Only) Firmware Release (2.2.56)

After downloading the firmware update, two stations that I was formerly able to watch (Antenna and Rewind) are now giving me a ‘playback failed’ error. Tablo isn’t even considering the possibility that the firmware update is what caused this sudden change in the behavior of these two stations.

I’ve been emailing customer support since Saturday and they refuse to transfer me to either a tech expert or a supervisor claiming they’re unable to transfer calls. I suppose they’re operating with two cans and a string because I don’t understand how any company in this day and age can’t transfer calls if, of course, they CHOOSE to transfer calls

No, what they’d rather do is blame the consumers. The cookie cutter email I received, asks: 1. is your cable damaged (No) 2. is your cable excessively long? (No, 6 feet). 3. Do you have other major appliances around the Tablo? (No, I have a bed next to the Tablo) 4. Is amplification toggled on in settings (I’ve done it both ways, no impact)

Ultimately, if the tech ‘geniuses’ ever deigned to get on the phone with me, I’d ask them this question: if my set up is so poor, how come I can watch those 2 stations by starting a recording on those 2 stations and THEN watching that recording, from the beginning…as it’s recording? I just can’t watch that program by clicking it LIVE in the program guide.

So, while I’d really like to hear that explanation, the tech team seems to be holed up in their offices, unwilling to speak to customers. And unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be much I can do. I’m stuck interacting with a powerless, ineffectual Mumbai-based Customer Service whose only function seems to be to stall customers. Shameful.

Did you want help from the community or just venting?

Check your duplicate post in the other thread.

What I would really like is for people to be actually helpful and abstain from sending out sophomoric GIFS. If you have nothing constructive to offer, maybe offer nothing. Just a thought..

Starting sometime today 12/14, my various Tablo apps started reporting that my Tablo could not be found. I tried doing a short press on the reset button, but then the Tablo appears to have gone into a boot loop I.e. flashing blue light, network light on switch the Tablo is connected to turning on for a few seconds, then all lights on the Tablo and network link going off and the cycle repeats. I tried pulling power from the Tablo for about 30 minutes and plugging it back in. Problem continues. Tablo still in an apparent boot loop.

Sorry, you’re running into that @ctirado,

Did this happen right after the firmware update?

Either way, it may be a good idea to reach out to Tablo Support.

Try a factory reset. That worked for me.

Kind of figured that would be the next step. Do you stand to lose anything if you do so? I am particularly concerned for the almost 1 TB of recordings sitting on external storage.

Ah, yes, someone else can confirm, but I believe you do lose any stored programming. :slightly_frowning_face:

You will lose everything, recordings, programming, scheduling, etc. It resets to factory.

I agree with this post - there should be an in-between reset that doesn’t reset or erase your hard drive. It could be initiated from the My Status - Tablo TV page.

Well that’s crap! I’ll reach out to tech support, but if the appliance is that fragile and the only recovery available is to lose everything, even when the storage is not internal, I couldn’t in good conscience recommend it to other users, especially those not as technically savvy,

I’m having the same issue as @BikerBrad After the firmware update to 2.2.56, I can longer play live content from any channel from the iOS app. I receive error messages either cannot play or cannot decode. Recorded content plays fine. I can play live content from my Roku devices so the issue seems isolated to iOS.

I’ve tried power cycling the Tablo and iPhone. I’ve also uninstalled/reinstalled the iOS app to no avail. I have a 4 tuner Tablo hard wired into my ethernet network. I’m in a strong reception area with a Clearstream Max-V antenna connected and never had any reception issues with this configuration even when it was connected directly to my TV tuner.

@BikerBrad were you able to make any progress on your iOS issue?

I read your response and I logged into my home network on my iPhone through an L2TP VPN connection. Ran the Tablo APP and viewing young and the restless at this moment.

I have a iPhone 14 Pro Max… It is working for me.

@PittPanther

edit:

I know @Lkny had some decoding issue with the AppleTV/Tablo and the station itself. I don’t know if this carries over the iPhone and iPad.

Ain’t gonna lie, this does take some fortitude to make it work really well. There is a small amount of science behind it. But once you get the science down, it runs really well.

However, $99 device having advance storage recovery and fail overs isn’t happening. I have a 700TB Synology running at work that can do all those features. It was almost a 15k server.

I hear you. I am in the IT department at my work and we have servers with tons of cores, terabytes of RAM and terabytes of storage in a SAN, all of which are quite costly. Administering it is how our team makes their living.

I understand that a $99 device can’t have the level of robustness of equipment many magnitudes more expensive. Which is why something like that should be resetable/replaceable without losing all you have stored on it. This is my first major issue with the Tablo in over a year and half of ownership and it’s disappointing that I might lose so many recordings.

Support has opened a case. Here’s hoping they can help.

made no progress. Still same issue. Don’t know of anything else to try?

I hear of the problems with Apple devices and it seems the logical answer would be to move to Android devices. I use Android devices and have never had these issues. Now don’t get me going about the wrong guide info on Tablo.

I wonder what version of iOS you’re using? I have 26.2 on both my iPhone and iPad and have no problems with the GEN 4 Tablo
