About This Release

Stereo Audio (AAC) Support for Users Affected by the Roku OS 14 Update

Support for delivering stereo audio (AAC) was specifically added for Roku users experiencing issues with playback caused by the Roku OS 14 update.

Once your Tablo has been updated to the 2.2.54 firmware, and your Tablo app for Roku has been updated to version 0.8.900 you can see and enable a new setting called Audio Compatibility Mode. This will allow affected Roku devices to play live TV and new recordings from Tablo again.

To learn more about this setting and how it works, check out this Knowledge Base article:

Nightly Streaming Channel Audit

With this firmware update, your Tablo will perform a nightly audit of all available free streaming channels on the Tablo platform. Instead of requiring a fresh channel scan, new streaming channels will be added and departing channels will be removed automatically from your channel lineup.

NOTE - This applies only to free streaming channels available on the Tablo platform. Detection and updates to over-the-air channels will still require a channel scan.

If you have trouble connecting to your Tablo after the update, wait 10 minutes, then reboot the Tablo and try again.

Thanks for the explanation for the “Nightly Streaming Channel Audit.” I was curious about how that actually worked and what it did. it appears to add new FAST Channels to my Guide automatically.

Will there be something to flag the new free channels so we won’t have to search for them?

Will they appear at the top of the guide for a week to give a chance to check them out?

Is there a way to reject getting those free streaming channels? If not, will there be an easy way to get rid of them? And if so, how?

You will be able to unselect them in the Settings for the Guide, so they don’t show up.

I have luckily skated through the latest Roku/Tablo problems, so I’m wary that these updates will cause new issues for me.
Updates don’t always make it better.

IIRC the Roku updates to 12.5 or 13 about a year ago caused me a lot of Tablo issues, so at that time I got an ONN as a backup. I recall being new to Tablo and cussing it out a lot. :slightly_smiling_face:

I also recall some discussion here about whether it’s a good idea to reset and/or power cycle the tablo after a firmware update. I think I’ll do both “whether it needs it or not”.

It would be nice to know if the gen 4 firmware updates are cumulative or serial. Many of them don’t fix any problem that I’ve had. And I’d love to skip all the useless updates and wait for something meaningful to me.

I wish that those of us who opened tickets with support could be on the list to get the firmware update first, an opt in maybe, so that we could try to help resolve the issue. If you’ve tried to work with support, you’ve already shown a willingness to troubleshoot and work with them. In case anyone actually reads these messages, I’d love to opt-in.

Hi @zippy,

They are cumulative, and integral to many larger, long term issues we address, and we strongly recommend these updates when they become available.

Hey Tablo, can you clarify this update for me?

My Tablo has upgraded to 2.2.52 and shows the setting for Auto Compatibility Mode. However, when I try to select ON for Auto Compatibility Mode it won’t save the setting change.

The Roku that I am testing this on is one of my setups that is suffering from the OS14 bug that I have not been able to fix by using the Roku Audio Setting workaround. It is running Roku Tablo application version 0.8.900-734366.

My question is, should this be working yet? Should I be able to change that Auto Compatibility Mode setting and save the change? Or, instead, should I be waiting for another update, to either the Tablo Firmware or the Roku app, that is needed to take advantage of this fix? Do I need 2.2.54? If I click ‘Check for Firmware Update’ it tells me that I am already updated to the latest version.

Thanks in advance.

The above says you need 2.2.54 and it will be rolled out over the next few weeks.

Okay, I read a little deeper and I see that I have to wait for .54 for this to work. I will give it time to roll out.

Finally fixed after 7 weeks!

I remember reading weeks ago we would not be able to watch previously recorded programs after the new upgrade. Is this still true?

Thanks for the update, everything so far is working fine again!

Just downloaded the new 2.2.54 firmware and updated my Tablo. I now have sound on all Roku’s for OTA channels and any DVR program made since the upgrade to 2.2.54. I changed the Trouble Shooting Option under settings to On for AAC and everything works with one exception. DVR programs made prior to the upgrade can only be viewed on the TV connected to directly to the Tablo. Going forward we are all set and happy to be able to view all programming on every Roku!

@vimitch63 ,

Recordings that fail due to the Roku 14 Tablo compatibility issue will still do so. The firmware can’t change their format.

That being said, recordings that were working before the upgrade, will still work

Got it! Thank you.

Why do you have to add more functions than necessary to this update? We have all been waiting months for this update that is supposed to fix the Roku issue and now I have to decide if I want to let Tablo use even more of my bandwidth by doing an auto scan daily! Tablo already uses more bandwidth than any other device on my network! Will there at least be an option to diable this “new” function?

I got the fix yesterday. Everything works fine except for my older recordings from July-September. They won’t open. I’m aware of recordings not working after the Roku update. I thought the recordings prior to the update were safe?
