New Roku Preview Update - New Dialog and Improvements

I’ve never found the preview tablo app to be as reliable or fully featured as the original app. But now when you load the original app you get a message saying your tablo software if out-of-date and will not work with future releases of this channel.

Based on the problems encountered in firmware 2.2.2 and what appears to be happening in 2.2.6 I don’t see the immediate need to upgrade to 2.2.6. So why obsolete the original app until 2.2.x firmware is stable and working.

That would probably add another few months to the life cycle of the original roku app.

This is just a message in the Roku app that lets you know there is a firmware update available for your Tablo. You can simply hit OK and choose to ignore it for now.

While there are no plans to update this older version of the channel, it is not going away in the short term.

This long loading time for recordings listing also occurred in the Preview channel after the firmware update to 2.2.5. They released a fix / update for the Preview channel that has since fixed the loading time, so they should know how to fix it for the Legacy / Original channel.

Out of curiosity though, you’re using the Legacy channel over the Preview channel? The lack of Live TV grid makes the Legacy channel unusable for me.

I like this response:

“This is just a message in the Roku app that lets you know there is a
firmware update available for your Tablo. You can simply hit OK and
choose to ignore it for now.”

This message starts popping up in the middle of the day. So now I get phone calls at work from my family asking what the heck is wrong with this product.

And did you explain to them nothing was wrong and the Tablo unit just needed to be updated?

Why should I have to. And how would I know since I’m at work. Maybe I should call the psychic hot line for the answer.

I don’t need informational messages popping up on my Roku. Since I have two tablos I like the fact the message shows up when one tablo is accessed and not the other. You would think tablo would be too busy fixing 2.2.6 that it wouldn’t have time for inserting information messages.

Maybe when the preview app works and has the same functionality as the original app or as promised the WEB app I’ll switch.

This is a default message in the Roku channel it’s been around for a long time, no time was wasted manually sending this update nor inserting it to the code for the channel.

Unfortunately they simply are not going to be able to please everyone, I for one really appreciate the notice through the Roku.

Except when traveling, I ONLY use the Tablo through the Roku so without that notice, I would never know an update was available.

Maybe the wording could be better, something such as “Your Tablo has an update waiting, please connect through a Phone App or Web interface to begin the update. Click “OK” to bypass this message”…

But for me, I would be VERY disappointed if some type of notice wasn’t there.

You received it for one Tablo and not the other because only one has been triggered to update so far. Tablo does the update in stages. It will likely begin to show for both within 24 hours.

They have never done it before for any of their firmware releases. And normally tablo sends out e-mail for new releases. I got one 8/31/2015 for the 2.2.2 release.

When your Tablo unit / device is aware of a firmware update that has yet to be applied and you connect to it via a Roku using the Original channel, you get this message. Likely in the past you’ve applied the firmware update prior to anyone using the Roku. I got this message many many months ago. It is not new.

I only use roku to play recordings. I’ve been through over 10 firmware updates and have never received the message. And since the message only appears when the first tablo is accessed and not the second, if I only accessed the second tablo for weeks on end what good does the message do?

And when accessing the first tablo via the WEB app, it’s not it’s time for the firmware update.

What does this mean? I’m confused.

If the firmware update is not available for that specific Tablo unit, when connecting to that Tablo using the Roku channel, he shouldn’t get any pop messages about the unit needing to be updated. So that’s very odd. Unless he is mixing up the two units, connecting to one via the Roku channel, and the other via the web app.

It was mimic quote from tablo on how firmware would now be rolled out in the the future. Something to the affect you will be notified when it’s time for your tablo to be updated.

I just tried the Original Tablo channel (aka Legacy channel) on my Roku 3 Model 4200, and it took 7 seconds to load the Recordings screen. Roku firmware is 6.2 and Tablo firmware is 2.2.5 beta. Roku and Tablo are both hard wired too.

I would open a Support Ticket with them to make sure it is reproducible on their end or else there will be no fix.
