Right now that section is part of the new device setup flow, but there’s no engineering reason why we couldn’t (or shouldn’t) make it accessible through settings at a later date.
These devices don’t have DVR ability, from what I understand. Most of these are along the lines of Live TV streaming more than VOD.
As zippy notes “there is money to be made in just tracking” - data collection, used in for demographic marketing is big business when it’s all pooled together.
That’s great to hear but it might not make much difference if we still need internet to watch like we do with the current Tablo. It’s a real pain when the internet goes down and we can’t watch locally recorded media.
So :
- we can perform the firmware update,
- Try the new app
- And, if we don’t like it, we CAN GO BACK and continue using the legacy app even if the firmware has been updated
is that correct?
Got the new Table device a couple hours ago, but have been unsuccessful setting it up. I’m using the Tablo app as instructed. Device is plugged in, with coax from antenna in, ethernet to my router, and a 1TB USB hard drive plugged in as well.
I’ve tried using my existing Tablo account, and that shows wrong email error. So, tried to register and create a new account, but verification code doesn’t come (2 hours and counting). Checked my inbox and junk mail. Just stuck not being able to move forward.
Not a good start :(!
Edit: Ok, finally after 2hrs 15mins, got my confirmation code and now setting up.
We’ll, isn’t Tablo connect part of what our lifetime subscription pays for? If we keep the current feature set, we would still see that value. I like watching content remotely when I travel, etc.
I don’t recall recorded media, but when internet is down I can watch the live channels with my 1st gen tablo 4 tuner. The fireTV app takes a long time to load but it does eventually and it works.
Correct! The planned firmware upgrade for network-connected Tablos won’t disable access to current subscription features. After the firmware upgrade, you can try out the new apps and see if you like them or keep using the legacy apps. Think of it like a choose your own adventure
Or it’s like a cruise where everyone catches norovirus - an adventure to remember
Sweet. So connect will still work as well as my grand fathered commercial skip? Seems like a win win if true. New app is snappy and fast. Me like
As long as you stick with the legacy apps.
More info/considerations for current customers can be found here:
Can we use different apps on different clients? For example could my networked Tablo use the new app experience on my Roku, but use the legacy app on my Amazon Firestick for travel?
Yep. That’s the plan.
We want to give everyone with a legacy Tablo as much flexibility as the technology allows.
If I upgrade my older Tablo Four with the Tablo FAST option will my Tablo Four now save recordings in MPEG2 format on my external USB drive?
That is a good question. Will it be recording to our drives in different (but coexisting) recording formats if we’re using both the old and new apps on different devices?
Nope. Nothing will change when it comes to video delivery.
The encoding of video is all based on the ‘guts’ of the device you’re using, not the app/interface.
From my experience the Tablo needs the internet during boot or it won’t communicate with the official apps. If the internet goes out and the Tablo is not reset it works fine until the internet comes back. The problem is that most of the times when my internet goes out it’s because of a power outage. Then our generator restores power inside my home but the Tablo was off for a brief period due to the power interuption. The Tablo will boot up when the power is restored by our generator but the official Tablo apps can’t talk to the Tablo until internet is restored as well. During that time I can only access recorded content on the Tablo using unofficial software from a computer. Live TV is not accessible at all until the internet is restored.
Apps should work if they can handle a hard ip and are not using the web service for discovery.
Edit: Let me say, that’s a general statement about OG style network Tablos, and not about the new 4th gen devices. I have no idea what is possible there, and I have a feeling (?) it might take a bit of work.
Unless you have an HDMI Tablo model this is already happening on whatever devices your Tablo is connected to.
That is awesome then. If I understand correctly the the new apps only work with the new firmware but the old apps work with either firmware so there is no downside to updating our Legacy Tablo to the new firmware and giving the new apps a try.
