I think this thread is fine for discussion about the new Tablo. But there definitely will be new threads for questions on how to use it, especially since the apps are quite different (and are not fully baked). It’s going to be a lot like the early days of the forum when the apps where being updated frequently.
One important app is missing, and that is using a browser. It looks like that will still be dedicated to legacy Tablos. Some apps aren’t ready yet (mainly AppleTv), but I am not sure it will ever support browsers.
To clarify the firmware bit…
The planned firmware upgrade for network-connected Tablos will simply enable them to use/switch to the new Tablo app experience. It won’t disable access to current subscription features. After the firmware upgrade, owners of legacy network-connected Tablo devices can try out the new apps and see if they like them or keep using the legacy apps.
It’s a bit more complex for legacy TV-connected HDMI Tablo devices because the UI is part of the operating system on the device itself. We haven’t fully sorted out all of the permutations and options for customers with those devices but we’ll try to provide as much flexibility as possible.
Yep. It’s in the works. No ETA yet though.
Thumbnails will still only be available on completed recordings. Processing thumbnails for live TV requires A LOT of processing power, and the cost to adding that kind of power into a device like Tablo would be prohibitive for a lot of consumers.
The Android app will NOT require syncing before use.
Thats my deal-breaker. Also brings into question the current 3rd party apps used to export recordings.
You can indeed fast forward on any recorded content, whether it comes from OTA or streaming.
If you prefer the existing legacy apps you can stick with them, even after the firmware update.
The firmware update for network-connected devices will simply enable you to choose to use the new app experience if you want.
This is incorrect. You can record any streaming program just like an OTA program.
Any app or UI that thinks it knows my preferences and wastes screen space and clicks on “recommended picks” is a losing no go.
@TabloTV after the firmware update is available for our legacy models, will this allow use of the new “antenna placement optimization”? Or will that be limited to the new hardware?
TV antenna placement optimization – The new Tablo mobile app helps consumers set up an antenna and Tablo device, so they get the best reception and most channels possible for their home’s location to broadcast towers.
So… nothing of even remote interest…
Ok then.
timrand- I’m thinking the same thing. For $100 I might add the 4th gen box as long as I can both access and switch between the two of them via the app. (I have a legacy 4 tuner network model)
I may be misreading what @lkahhan means, but I took it as, “if everyone already has the FAST channels they actually want on their FireTV, Roku, AppleTV, etc, why will they watch these FAST channels that they … don’t want to watch?”
Which would mean, that no one was seeing the ads on the Tablo/Scripts channels… which would mean that income would have to be made up… somehow… or… everything goes … poof.
I’m sorry if I’m misreading it @lkahhan
How would Scripps know you weren’t watching their FAST channels unless they were tracking everything you watch.
And thus there is money to be made in just tracking that info.
Yes, that’s how FAST channels work? Providers track the usage and sell advertising based on that usage…
You don’t really think that monetization of user information is limited to FAST channels.
No, but the addition of the Scripts FAST channels and the free guide data are certainly connected and based on the expectation of some usage of those channels sales of advertising based on the viewership and related data?
How much other OTA viewing/recording data will be collected and sent back to the mothership, compared to now, is yet to be seen? I’d expect that that information would have to be disclosed, somewhere? Considering data privacy laws in various places they do business?
You don’t think they would sell a product without explaining the terms of service. And now that Nuvyyo is part of scripps the mothership is much bigger
.
I downloaded the new Tablo app on Roku and it found my existing 4 Tuner Tablo with the original firmware and directed me to download the IOS app on my phone which I did and the IOS app asked me to sign in to my Tablo account but when I submitted my valid credentials I get a “Sign-In Error”. I’m guessing because my original Tablo is not upgraded??? Has anyone else tried this? I do have a second, unused, Tablo that I plan to be my test box when the firmware upgrade becomes available but it will be a long wait for that…
