Load on their servers of what? People just opening the apps? If that’s creating a load problem there is a bigger root problem.
Their servers went down last weekend
Understood, as a fellow “server dude” I’m asking why you think it’s a load issue?
I think it may be a connectivity issue and the fact some of the apps depend on being able to communicate with the “mothership” initially is showing the risk of using that method if the servers are having availability issues. It’s not like the OTA signal is passing through their servers, the OTA streaming from the Tablo to whatever playback device you use is happening across your local network.
I believe a week ago (last weekend) it was mentioned that Tablo servers have gone down. I for one do not know their infrastructure, nor do I know how they’ve designed the entire application
It does indeed sound like you were experiencing some reception issues @Buzz56.
It’s worth noting that Tablo has at least two tuners whereas all of your televisions only have 1, and every time you split the signal from your antenna you will lose some signal strength.
While Tablo does have a built-in amplifier that helps reduce this signal loss, it sometimes does not make up for all of it, especially if the antenna is being shared between many other devices like yours is.
Additionally, televisions simply spit out what they receive when it comes to broadcasts. Tablo must decode the broadcast and stream it over your network or record it. Therefore it can be more sensitive to errors within the broadcast stream.
The good news is that CBS will be re-airing this special on Friday so you have a second chance to catch it:
Thank you for your explanation. Since my Tablo is a 4 tuner model, I didn’t realize when purchasing that the result would denigrate the signal (since it is splitting it up signal between tuners). But it makes sense now.
Can I return the 4 tuner and replace it with a 2 tuner @TabloTV ?
2 tuner is going to have a splitter as well. Anything that that has a single coax feeding it but has multiple tuners by definition is going to require some type of splitter.
Denigration of signal would be less with the 2 tuner Tablo vs the 4 tuner. Did you misunderstand the ask?
Nope, but depending on your signal quality when it goes into the Tablo even a 2 way split may result in issues. Was just pointing that out as simply changing from a 4 tuner to a 2 tuner may not resolve reception issues.
ok, you’re beating a dead horse here… it goes without saying if you split the signal between 2 tuners you have more signal than between 4.
In fairness, in your comment above you said you didn’t realize since it is splitting the signal between tuners that that this would denigrate the signal. I was simply trying to be clear.
(Deleted comment - I’ll let Tablo answer about exchange policy)
I’m guessing you’re using an 8-way splitter with the Tablo connected to one of the eight outputs. The seven TVs each get one-eighth of the signal strength from the antenna. But the four Tablo tuners each get one thirty-second.
I would try putting a 2-way splitter ahead of the 8-way. Connect the Tablo to one of the two outputs and the 8-way splitter to the other. The TVs would each get one-sixteenth of the signal strength and the Tablo tuners would each get one-eighth.
On my first Tablo 4th Gen Quad, I used to get FAILED recordings rather frequently. On my new 4th Gen Quad, I’ve yet to get a single FAILED recording.
Might have been the first DVR overheated. I had a ceiling fan going 24/7, but the DVR was near a wall so it probably didn’t get much air circulation. I put an $18 fan on it, but I think the damage might already have been done.
The new DVR has had the fan blowing on it continuously since power-up, and no more FAILED recordings. (Sync issues, to be discussed soon, but not FAILED.)
That’s an interesting idea. Thanks for the feedback
Do you have further info on what fan you selected?
Interestingly, in my area, the guide for Tablo Classic gained this update overnight (I can search for “Billy Joel”), but Tablo 4th Gen did not
I just bought a gen 4/4 tuner at BB when they had them on sale. I have not set it up yet and until seeing this thread I had never thought about signal strength loss due to splitting.
My gen 4/2 tuner, with indoor antenna, works best using no amplification at all. When adding the 4 tuner, In the best case I would continue to not need amplification, second best would be if the Tablo internal amplification would be sufficient. Compared to gen 4/2 tuner, does the gen4/4 tuner have extra amp circuitry to handle the additional tuners ?
BTW my gen4/2 tuner, which is located on a ventilated shelf, has never run more than barely warm.
Aint gonna lie… Current chipsets are built to run hot.
Agree with @Ron1
8 way splitter is a 10-12DB loss… and then adding the 2 tuner which is 3-4DB loss.
If your perfect signal is 0… you are -10 to -13db… Which -17 is disconnection.
Look into “unbalanced splitters” that will solve your problem.
