Since it’s the format of ATSC and DVD, most TVs have to handle MPEG2.
It should be noted that the Roku didn’t always support MPEG2. Edit: I may be wrong about that.

@Traderofkind the Tablo ATSC 3.0 HDMI was announced on January 4th, 2022 with an anticipated ship date of spring 2022. I’m still waiting for this product to be available for purchase. So, you can’t always rely on their promises.
They did let you preorder one, I did, then they canceled my order and returned the small deposit saying the product was delayed due to the change with the ATSC 3 DRM requirement. No other ATSC 3 DVR fully works either, tried all of them. None should have been released as they are really, but Tablo was the only one smart enough to not rush it and sell an ATSC 3 DVR that can not work as an ATSC 3 DVR.
Did not make it for Christmas. Now they have all the time they need to get it right. I am glad I took the others back . Never would have heard the end from the Mrs. It’s a shame I thought it would of have been one of the best little present’s for the relative’s. I know the guys would of liked it.
Yep I know of 3 people that are friends of mine and I had to tell them the same thing NO APPLE TV SUPPORT. I believe they went with TiVo.
I had a number of friends and family ask about TiVo vs Tablo and I did some research because I didn’t have an answer and based on a number of factors, I’m still glad I chose to buy Tablo. I bought a 2 tuner and a 4 tuner but I think the 4 tuner was worth the additional cost.
TiVo edge for antenna has a max of 2 tuners and costs $450, if you want to include all-in-service which really is a must have and if you want to connect to multiple TVs you need to purchase another piece of equipment that costs another $199 and don’t know if there are other fees to get things working throughout your home.
Even though TiVo comes with 500GBs, you’ll definitely need more storage if you plan recording 4K content which OTA networks don’t come close to doing yet, so the 128GB on Tablo vs 500GB on TiVo is a moot point.
TiVo doesn’t have support for firestick or FireTV from what I heard and the Apple iOS sounded like it’s got issues from iPhone ( ie. TiVo records everything you try viewing so get ready to play cleaner on your storage ).
Oh, another annoying thing is the TiVo guide mixes paid content with free streaming so you might find something you like but then find you can’t watch without purchasing Netflix or Hulu or YouTube TV… and you can’t tell TiVo to block out those paid services that you don’t subscribe to.
One last thing I learned was that not all Network content is available when you try accessing that content remotely and I found that in the fine print at TiVo and confirmed with someone I know that was on vacation in Puerto Rico and they couldn’t watch a number of sports.
I’d like to hear what your friends have found working with TiVo and if any got the TiVo edge for antenna which is the one that seems closest to Tablo.
@Barrabing I personally have 2 of the older black tablo with the 4 tuners which I’ve had for over 8 years and paid for the life time program guide and I love them. I’ve also have the white tablo, I got one of the first ones because I am a beta tester for the old and new tablo I was very excited to receive one of the first 4th gen to test only to be disappointed because I could only watch on a iPad or iPhone. So yes years ago when I was looking for an over the air drv my choice wasTablo or Simple TV which I chose the Tablo and have been very happy with them.
My point to not recommending Tablo to my friends is not because I didn’t like the tablo but because they no longer sell the old tried and true black tablo which I know works great with Apple TV and like me that are all in on Apple devices. So imagine having an entertainment system with 50 + inch screens but being locked in at watching tv and a 12 inch iPad or even smaller screen iPhone? If I had of recommended the 4th generation tablo to my friends that uses Apple TV for Christmas this year I don’t believe they would be my friends the day after Christmas or listen to my advice anymore. Just stating facts yes I recommend the new tablo to my friends but only if they don’t use the Apple TV as the main streaming device and yes I use the new white tablo with my Apple devices but when I’m going to watch over the air tv I also use my older tablo so I can watch on my larger tv screens.
In all fairness, ATSC 3.0 is a different beast, there’s a lot going on beyond Tablo’s control for that one.
I think that ATSC 3.0 is going to end up being the way Broadcast over the air TV finally has a way to charge for their services. All open broadcasters are very interested in the way the scrambled signal works on ATSC 3.0 and what it entails. The only way to stop this is through the Fed’s.
We will just have to wait and see but it don’t look good for FREE over the air TV.
I have always used AppleTV, but I do have Android devices too for the things they can do that AppleTV can’t like web browser to watch streaming sites, so I gave up on waiting. I went all in on FireTV Cubes now have one on every TV. When and if the AppleTV app ever comes I will rethink it of course.
I have the ADTH ATSC 3 converter box right now and it is not as buggy as some say. I have received a bunch of updates and now it can even “record” ATSC 3 DRM programs in a “very limited” DVR. Going to be a bedroom or kitchen low use box in the end. VERY nice picture better IMO than the 2 other ATSC 3 DVR’s I have used and some have channels and shows have HDR.
- I completely understand what your saying about how your friends with Apple TV’s would react and you’d have to reduce your holiday gift list because I have two TVs with Apple TV and definitely wish I didn’t have to buy more equipment which I wound up buying one fireTV for the family room and got it for $29 during Black Friday deals, or I might have a revolt on my hands in my household if I told my family they had to wait until Apple TV support was available till they could watch TV again…
I don’t know why the company stopped selling the legacy Tablo. I never had one but quite a few people say really good things about them. Have they ever given a reason, other than the product was so good that they exhausted the market and needed support to get back to work?
I am sure everyone here is right in their own needs. I just have a family that does not like Technology changes or Streaming box changes after they learn how to get their programs on the one they have now.
As I said before to each his own.
I see that someone said they were able to screen share from their iPad/iPhone, but when I do that it shows up sideways. Anyone figure out a way to fix that until we get an updated AppleTV app? We’re all Apple in our household.
Also, is remote access going to be in the works? I also have one of the original 4-tuner black boxes and loved accessing my recordings during travel.
They ran out and all the production is for the 4th gen units. It doesn’t make sense to manufacture both at the same time.
IMHO, if you think remote access (apart possibly from Scripps owned content) is coming… you may be disappointed.
@snowcat - That makes sense. When I was doing research on TiVo I found so many different products, with so many different models and various features that’s one had and others didn’t that I felt like my head was going to trying to figure out which one was closest to Tablo.
By the way, if you don’t mind, how do you place a block off text from my response into the top of your response?
No problem. Just highlight the text you want to quote, and you should see "Quote appear in a box. Click on it, and that text will be in your response.
Thank you!
I’m also an Apple TV fan, and at this point am knee-deep in Roku’s. Not happy about that, but I knew that the Apple TV platform wasn’t available when I made my pre-order of the new Tablo. Not sure how long I’ll hang onto the new Tablo, though, if the Apple TV platform isn’t “close” in the real sense of “close” rather than the marketing one, but I’m getting pretty tired of the slow, old UI, ads, etc. Roku’s at this point.
“The point of no return” for me is still mid-January, and not expecting Apple TV by then. Hoping for this spring, but don’t know if I’ll stick it out.
