What features would make the 4th Gen the very best OTA DVR?

Whoops I forgot to add that I just use the right arrow key on my Roku remote to fast forward 10 seconds. I have gotten really good at knowing the commercials that go for 180, or 240 seconds LOL. Is it ideal? Maybe not but I just count 18 taps etc and I’m usually pretty accurate. I also admit I don’t usually watch the shows that I’m taping at the same time. I wait to they are finished recording as that works for me and misses.

Might I suggest that you look at some of the resources provided by Tablo to explain the design of the system since you as of my posting have been a member of the community for approximately 4 hours.

Here is an article to get you started related to preview thumbnails:

https://support.tablotv.com/hc/en-us/articles/13953983246484-How-Fast-Forward-Preview-Thumbnails-Work

It sounds like maybe you didn’t research the Tablo product as much as you should have before purchasing if you had specific requirements that needed to be met that just aren’t possible things right now.

An actual signal meter instead of dots that are green! Or another color or no color! Show strength and quality!

Possibly. But, unfortunately, the Recast was discontinued in 2022 and is no longer supported so we’re actually lucky to have the Tablo available.

I had an Amazon Recast before switching to the Tablo, and my experience is exactly the opposite. Overall, I think the Tablo is much better than the Recast!

The Tablo does not recast the 1080i video to 720p like the Recast does, so the picture quality is better. Also, my Recast regularly missed series recordings (like the Stephan Colbert show). I had to constantly monitor series recordings, and if they were not scheduled to record, I had to switch the recording to record a single episode, which was very annoying. The Tablo is very reliable, and I do not have to worry about missing recordings. Also, the Tablo engineers actually listen their customers and make meaningful changes. The Recast engineers never listened to anything that their customers said, they just did whatever they wanted, even if it was not what the customers wanted (like removing the channel numbers from the guide listing). Since purchasing my 4th gen Tablo in February, Tablo has made a number of very useful changes, incorporating customers suggestions. It is much better now than when I purchased it, and the Tablo keeps getting better.

I think you should use the Tablo for a while longer, get used to its interface, and give it a chance. Yes, there is no red light while recording, and the thumbnails work a little differently, but overall, I think the Tablo is a better DVR.

…Sorry for going off topic.

My point is that many of the requested features have been delivered. This thread is only from January 2025.

Please change the skip ahead from 10 seconds to 30 seconds (leave skip back at ten seconds).

Most commercials are at least 3 minutes long. That means you have to press skip ahead 18 times to get past the commercial. When watching late night TV some commercials are over 5 minutes long. that means 30 presses of skip ahead to bypass the commercial. When I had Dish Network and Amazon Recast, they both skipped ahead 30 seconds at a time, and it was a lot easier to use.

If you want to skip ahead 10 seconds, you could skip forward 30 seconds, and skip back twice. Skipping forward through commercials is done much more frequently, so skipping ahead 30 seconds at a time would be much more useful.

Skip ahead options for how many seconds we want. 10sec or 15sec or 30 sec. This way we all are happy.

That would be the ultimate skip ahead change!

Not from what I can tell. You can pick one channel or all channels. You can’t pick two channels out of three. I would like the second option.

I’ll retest it… But I thought I selected ‘all’ and let it schedule. Then went into ‘coming soon’ and found the one on the channel that I didn’t want and cancelled it. The other two remained scheduled.

I thought I was wrong but I was mistaken.

Although OTA simultaneous recording would be limited to the number of available tuners in the Tablo, it seems to be a relatively simple change to add the check mark next to those channels rather than ‘all’ or ‘one’.

FAST doesn’t need tuners and are limited by the copyright restrictions but needs to be capped for resource consumption.

After testing a little the obvious drawback is that ‘all’ selects any airing visible in the 14 day guide. Any future channels that may become available or airings on other channels was also selected for recording regardless of OTA or FAST. So that setting is not static.

My attempt was to uncheck the channel I didn’t want, then schedule the recording and later recheck the hidden channel. Failed.

A Boolean change from a check to an ‘X’ might work to exclude the channel that is unwanted.

That means I have to go in every day, search through all the scheduled episodes of that series and remove one or two that I don’t want recorded. And hope that the Tablo doesn’t decide in the middle of the day to add those episodes back.
I would much rather pick the two channels I want the series to be recorded on, and go on with my life.

Number two above would be huge. I had a difficult time finding a TV that allowed saving a scan, then moving the antenna and manually adding additional channels. In fact, Toshiba (at the time) was the only tv brand that I could find that allowed that. If Tablo implemented such a system, my channels would at least double. And many unique ones could be added, as well. It would be huge. But I suspect there’s not enough people that could actually take advantage of that feature to make it worth their while.

I was responding to cliqueofone’s suggestions with this post.

Most of us have good internet, where streaming a video (live or recorded) from our Tablo to a device outside the home wouldn’t be an issue. This would be the best new feature to add!

Ok, using a VPN is possible… but this is meant to be a consumer product, not an IT test.

@wthomas51 - the OG Legacy can be tricky for an inexperienced person to set up for outside access - you still have to get into the router and set up port forwarding. Hopefully, if they do this, it’ll be more streamlined.

There are well known ways to avoid issues with port forwarding, and dynamic IP addresses. Tablo could offer this service without any complicated setup by the user. Remote desktop software (such as Splashtop) has got it all figured out…

I fall into the population that could take advantage. I spent years dealing with late night scans at various antenna setting trying to get channels that I wanted without losing ones I already have.

The ability to MANUALLY toggle Off-Line Mode on and off. Turning it on improves the playback of recorded shows on the hard disk.

We should be able to manually select off-line mode in those cases.
