UPDATE - Roku Revamp + Amazon FireTV/Android TV Apps

@oldmike - This was not a feature we were planning to roll out in the first part of the new Roku platform. It was going to be added later as we continued to roll out features in this new channel.

You can read more about the plans here: https://www.tablotv.com/blog/sneak-peek-new-roku-channel-amazon-fire-android/

I'm confused.  I have episode delete on Roku/Tablo now, so how is this new?  What everyone has been asking for for a year plus is the ability to either set maximum number of episodes to record (deleting older ones) or at least delete all instances of a given show.  If the only "new" feature here is to delete a single episode I don't see how that is an addition.
They seem to have written the new version of the Roku channel more or less from the ground up. For whatever reason they had decided to leave that feature out from the initial release but now they've re-evaluated that decision based on feedback from the beta testers.

What @TabloTV just said is that multi-episode deletion is coming but they haven't designed the user interface for it yet.

Just speaking for myself, I wouldn’t mind waiting for a week to have the delete option on Roku. Great job @TabloTV and thanks for listening to the feedback.

Hard drives fill-up fast and sometimes don’t perform as well when almost full so the delete option really needs to be added ASAP.

Just curious. How will this new Roku channel be released? Will I get an email, or will it automatically update on my Roku? Will I need to reboot afterward? Also, will a Tablo firmware accompany the roku channel release?

If you have a Tablo subscription or are signed up for our newsletter you will receive an email. You will need to add the Roku channel via your Roku account (don’t worry, we’ll give instructions for this). You will need to reboot and yes it will require new firmware.

Does Android TV support equate to Chromecast support?

I have an android tv nexus player and asked to sign up for beta but never got a response. Glad to help if you need more testers.

Looking forward to the release.

Does Android TV support equate to Chromecast support?

I can confirm that casting does indeed work to the android TV device

And Android TV is the new Google Android TV Nexus Player native app, chromecast support is different…

Chromecast is a whole other animal.
Not really Android at all on the interface side of things (I usually use my notebook for dealing with Chromecast although I CAN use an Android phone, that’s more the Tablo app than Chromecast itself)

I would like to see a better tie-in with Chromecast - when I decide to watch a recorded show it starts playing on the device or computer BEFORE it gets connected to the Chromecast device, so I have to pause the playback and start it over again from the beginning once Chromecast is up and working. Very annoying to have to do things twice. It’s as if Tablo is oblivious to Chromecast. It starts playing on the “in between” device before you even have Chromecast going so it takes twice as many steps to play back via Chromecast.
Would love to see Tablo not start playing until Chromecast tells it to but I bet that is nearly impossible since technically Tablo is playing to your Android device or computer/notebook - Chromecast just echos the screen to the TV.

Thank you for being honest about the delay. Looking forward to the new Roku app.

Take as long as you need! I cant wait for the new Roku update you guys Rock!

I always delete from the Roku app so I’m very glad you decided to not take a step back and remove functionality. I also really appreciate taking the effort t get it right. I think you will find in the long term a much better user experience when you get it right.

So What Needs to be Tweaked?
On Roku, beta testers requested that we include episode delete functionality in the first release of the revamped channel. Since many users like to delete episodes right after watching them, this is something we want to add to increase usability.
Looking forward to this!  While we're on the subject of deleting, delete from Ruku is nice, but some sort of "keep last X episodes" feature would be super helpful.  As an example, my wife likes Law & Order.  She has no interest or care about watching every episode of every season, but when nothing good is on live TV, she likes to be able to switch to recorded episodes catch some Law & Order.  In this case, we only ever need 2 or 3 episodes saved on the DVR at any one time, but the way things are now we have dozens...almost 100 episodes.  It slows down loading the law & order episodes section SIGNIFICANTLY, and because there's no "delete all" option (that I can find), it takes forever to delete them one at a time.

Anyway, I'm sure this isn't the first time the idea has been voiced.  But I wanted to mention it once more because it seems like key feature of a robust DVR system (in other words, it's something we miss from FIOS).

I know the new release was delayed a week but is there a specific day since we’re getting close?

After having used the new Roku channel for about a week, I just want to say that it is everything I hoped it would be. At first it was slightly slower (not sure if it was syncing or something), but now it is lightning fast, and is one of the best designed apps on the Roku - period. Thanks for working so hard on this update!

@tablotv is there any update? Its been about a week and I am getting anxious. :>

I’m in. I cut the cord with Dish Network. Just finished my trial subscription with Tablo and signed up for the annual subscription. Can’t wait for the update for my Roku 3 and Roku LT.

Looks like the new app for Fire TV is available from Amazon now!!
