Update on 4th Generation Tablo Compatibility with Roku OS 14

I haven’t been able to get my Roku 4K (3810) stick to work with my 3 year old Samsung and Legacy Tablo since this problem started. Finally gave up and bought a new Amazon Fire TV 4K Max Stick yesterday on a Black Friday sale and gotta say I’m loving it! Everything just works! Think I’ll pick up another one to replace my oldest Roku on the old bedroom TV even though it still works with Tablo.

This. With the Tablo 4th gen still early in its life, it’s best to diversify your streaming box options, and the ONN box is a cheap way to do that.

I finally gave up and bought an Apple TV 4K 128 GB from Target for $78. (includes $50 rebate for signing up for a Target Circle debit card. Also gets 15% off first purchase and usual 5% off of each purchase). Channels load much quicker than with Roku: 5 seconds versus 10 seconds. Also, you can see a preview of the other channels without going back to the grid.

Off the top of my head, assuming “two” audio channels on OTA, you may find that one is AC3 english and the other is Spanish. Especially true on sports. Something to keep in mind.

yup! …at least that’s the intent!

Hey Tablo Team, it’s getting close to the end of 2024. Can you provide a specific ETA, or at least an estimated date for the update to fix the Roku 14 audio issue?

I have a Roku HD streaming stick that still worked with my Legacy Tablo even with Roku 14.0 but the latest update to Roku 14.1 broke it. Glad I’d already picked up an extra Fire TV Stick to replace it.

It is a top priority but, unfortunately, we can’t give an ETA.

I probably should have started with this thread before my purchase (had I known). But just to be clear:

The issue was discovered in September when Roku released v14.
Tablo is working on two firmware fixes; one temporary and one long-term.

The temporary one is supposed to be available this month (December 2024) and will provide an option to disable AC3 Surround Sound on the Tablo device.

The long-term fix, which is in development, will enable support for dual audio tracks. This will allow customers to utilize their Roku’s running v14. No ETA on this.

Just wondering whether I should return the Tablo and wait for the long-term resolution OR wait for the temporary fix later this month.

Never buy something on the promise of future improvements.

This is correct and very concise. We don’t know when Tablo will push out the fix. It has to go through testing and then when they send it to Roku they have to approve it before sending it out to the devices.

The problem is specific to certain Roku/TV combinations. There is a workaround that works for some, but not all systems. I have six Roku setups in my house, four work, two do not. If your Roku are more than five years old it would not be a bad idea to upgrade anyway.

Since you seem to have done your homework, I assume you have already seen the workaound, but in case you didn’t…
In the settings for the Roku device, navigate to: Audio → Digital Output Format → Custom.
Make sure Dolby Digital is selected for the Dolby section - leave the ‘DTS’ Setting disabled.
Return to the Tablo app and try playing again.

The update may have just been pushed out. My Tablo app just updated to build 900. It did not fix my sound issue but it may need the new 2.2.54 firmware first for it to work. I will do that later after my recordings finish up.

I had already tried the workaround you mentioned but it didn’t help. But I do appreciate the info.

We have a new Roku update that should help.

Check out the details here.

We’re on the way Tablo!! The “Playback Options Surround Sound Passthrough” selection options are now available in my settings with the 2.2.52 version. Just can’t change/select them yet. Excitedly looking forward to your forthcoming 2.2.54. Yippee!!

I received the firmware update after resetting the Tablo by pressing the button on the bottom of the device. Finally fixed after seven weeks.

I appreciate there is a fix in the update stream. My Tablo does not see the new firmware available yet even after pushing the reset button at the bottom of the device.

For the next update after this, how about a backdoor to force a firmware update. I get not rolling it out to every device on the same day, but some way to opt-in to the latest via user action would be great.

Waiting patiently to be able to play off air content on 2 of my 3 TVs …

Okay, got the 2.2.54 firmware update installed. Enabled compatibility mode for my Roku Express + (stereo) LG TV.

Now: OTA channels don’t crash, and the audio is good, but the OTA video is stuttering and macro-blocking on my Roku Express. I’ve verified that the antenna signal is good using my Roku Ultra + Visio TV. Streaming channels are good on the Roku Express.

Any suggestions?

If you haven’t already, reboot all your devices one at a time, including your router. Some folks have reported that it helps.
