I have found that when the Gen 4 gets glitchy (can’t find Tablo, can’t find shows, and just generally craps out), if I power cycle the Tablo, things kinda clear up. It happens so often, that I now will do a power cycle first thing in the morning, every day. This thing has so many bugs, no exterminator would touch it.
Totally feel your frustration i have had similar issues with the Gen 4 acting up power cycling definitely seems to help clear things up temporarily but it is frustrating to have to do it daily just to keep things running smoothly. Hopefully, future firmware updates will iron out some of these bugs. In the meantime, some folks have had luck putting their Tablo on a smart plug with a scheduled daily reboot might save you the hassle of doing it manually every morning. Hang in there!
That is sad to have to do that.
Glad I got a Legacy before they stopped selling them.
But why are some of us not having any issues like this? I have never intentionally restarted my gen 4 in the 1 year and 8 months I’ve had it. The only time it was shut down then restarted was for maybe 3 power outages in that time that I figured could last longer than the UPS could keep it alive. And I’ve never had to restart the onn 4k pro streaming device either. Now when I used Rokus I typically had to restart them every month or two.
Ditto @SophieCat - we seldom have problems anymore. I may press the Reset button on occasion when the Guide doesn’t update or servers go down, but otherwise it’s seldom. I’ve become a proponent of reviewing and improving home networks. Maybe these things actually do help:
- UPS to condition the power and keep power surges and drops from damaging the unit;
- Small 4" fan to keep heat down - heat, even though a device can take it, is sometimes detrimental to performance;
- Properly configured network that ensures a stable connection for trouble-free viewing.
I think it’s typical for users to purchase a device and slap it on their network, expecting it to “just work”, without considering the device’s requirements and the current state of their home network. The post below by @jdkoontz is a good example of surveying, reviewing, and testing a home network.

I had that with the last gen and its why i got the new one. Haven’t had that issue, thankfully.
So far so good with mine Gen4 2 tuner and 4 tuner.
Most of the issues I see with others is… Low RF signal, Shotty Wireless signal and network hardware. There is a little “science” behind the Tablo and RF signal. Some dont get it or dont want to get it.
