Tablo Roku App (4th Gen) Update (v. 1.0.2)

Hi folks -

Another update to the 4th generation Tablo app on Roku is rolling out now.

Based on your feedback, this update includes some tweaks to the behavior and appearance of the player when fast-forwarding and rewinding content.

You should see these changes shortly, but if you’d like to update right away, navigate to the Tablo app on your Roku device’s home screen and hit the star button (*) on your Roku remote. Then select ‘Check for Updates’.

Here’s what you can expect:

We’re watching our recording of The Amazing Race from last night. FF through the first set of commercials, hit “Play” and got a spinning circle. Never started to play again. Exited Tablo, re-entered, same thing. Updated the app, now we just get a black screen when we pick “Resume Recording”. Rebooted Roku, same thing. Just ditched YTTV again and thought Tablo would be working…and this is what we get right out of the gate lol.

I wish Roku would stop updating their app so the Tablo team could work on other needs. Like being able to still watch TV when the server is out. One would think that more important than never ending Roku tweaks.

Love the larger thumbnails in filmstrip mode and the “press and hold” on the directional buttons. Thank you Tablo!

Were a couple of new streaming channels added at the top of the guide? I noticed this morning that I had to scroll down a little further to get my local morning news.

FWIW, Channels DVR is not compatible with Roku since the developers refuse to jump the roadblocks Roku throws up to play on their platform. Tablo would be wise to follow the same strategy and limit itself to a handful of platforms, then perfect its software to run on only those platforms.

Yes! Focus on the vital few, done properly, instead of the vast many done poorly.

Guess wrong on what “few” means, and bye bye market.

Roku is the market leader at the moment. So IMHO that should be what Tablo puts #1 effort in now. I have a LG and Samsung Smart TV’s that are older and Tablo won’t run on them natively. I will buy a Roku to add to the TV’s but not but a new TV to get it to work.

You did get my point. Sure, Roku is the big number one with 2nd place being very very distant. But, one could argue that “the few” means Roku, Apple (because they are loud and very proud) and Android. Oh… and while likely not possible for a long time, standard browser support would be great. But, that could be a very very very long way off (like beyond what most people could even imagine).

And remember, Roku is not one, but rather a dozen or so different devices, each a little different. I think that just keeping up with all the variations of Roku (especially the older ones) would be quite the undertaking.

Actually, if… if… people stuck with BrightScript, it’s not a problem at all. But everyone forced Roku to open up the “low end” (mess) so they could create “their unique experiences”. The high level API does make assumptions and most could not live with those assumptions.

Good point as my Roku Express does not work for Tablo. Not enough memory. My Roku Ultra works good. For my wife and I personally we tend to like the Roku interface. My main point was having to many devices to support. That has to really stretch the development team.

I wish the FFWD didn’t start by itself, but bringing back the timeline is much appreciated.
