My wife had 1 recording like that last night. Really weird, only on 1 recorded episode.
It showed “live” but none of the FF/RW function worked.
I didn’t try to watch the recorded show on another Roku device. She already watched it and deleted it.

@MrDoh @KimchiGUN were these both 100% completed recordings? Were they from OTA or streaming channels?
Yes, they were completed recording. We watched the whole show.
@KimchiGUN @MrDoh Consulted with engineering and this is a bug we’ve been trying to chase down.
@MrDoh If you still have the recording, can you put your Tablo into remote access mode so we can grab it for testing?
@KimchiGUN If you see it again, save the recording and let us know.
Will do!
The recording that I watched that showed “LIVE” was a completed OTA DVR recording. Unfortunately I deleted it after seeing it, I have a habit of doing that to keep clutter down. Next time this happens I’ll be sure to not delete the recording, and will point you at it.
Okay got a couple of recordings that say “LIVE”, and don’t allow fast forwarding at all. I rebooted the Roku, and both still say “LIVE”. So I left them alone at that point.
They are recordings of the local news from 6PM - 7PM, Channel KSBW, Feb. 26, 2024. Right now they’re in the “Latest” category under “Library”. I’ve put the Tablo into “remote access mode” (Ser. num. 5087B8529C17).
I usually have these as Keep = 1, changed it to Keep = All for obvious reasons. Please tell me when you’re done so that I can do whatever I’m going to do with it (watch it or delete it). I expect that I need to reboot the Tablo to get out of remote access mode.
Hopefully this helps you in your pursuit of this bug. Also called Tablo support about this post, hopefully that will speed things up some.
By the way, loved the “Twin Peaks” sounding music on hold on your support line. Brought back a few creepy scenes from that show when I heard it.
@MrDoh Excellent. (Well, not excellent but glad we have another shot at this…)
Stay tuned.
Looks like you turned off remote access mode…not leaving that on overnight again :-).
My pleasure.
The logs seem to show that these recordings were still in progress when you were attempting to play them back, so it makes sense that they were still being delivered as a live stream.
Is that not the case?
Yes, but I do this all the time (and expect to be able to) with the Roku and the Gen 4 Tablo, watch the recording of a show that’s currently being recorded, so that I can fast forward through the ads. And it almost always works, except rarely I’m told that the recorded show is “LIVE”, and fast forwarding isn’t allowed by the app. So even if it was being recorded, I should have been able to fast forward through the ads, as I usually do, and not be told that this recorded version was “LIVE”.
It sounds like you are describing the correct behavior of the Tablo, so I am not sure what the issue is. If you are all caught up (hence the “live” text), then you won’t be able to fast forward because there is nothing to fast forward to.
Let me give you the complete scenario. We record the nightly news, and wait about 15 minutes after it starts to play the recording. The news is still recording, but I can eliminate the 15 minutes of commercials by watching the recording and fast forwarding through the commercials.
If the recording tells me it’s “LIVE”, and doesn’t let me fast forward, then that’s a bug. I’m well aware that if I’m caught up, I can’t go into the future, so don’t worry about that. The particular one that I just submitted to Tablo was one where I waited 15 minutes to start watching the recording from the beginning, and couldn’t fast forward at all. The reason was that the app or somebody thought that the recording was really “LIVE”, and put the word “LIVE” on the screen on the recording that I was playing.
Okay? A little confusing, but I’m sure I’m not the only Tablo user that watches a recording while its being made in order to see it in a timely way, and still be able to click through commercials.
And you were sure you were at the beginning of the news and not live? An easy way to tell is to rewind a little bit and see if you had 15 minutes of rewind available or practically nothing (as if you started at the beginning).
If you go to the channel grid and click on it, it will start at the current live spot.
If you go to the recordings and select your news episode first, it will start at the beginning. But if you or anyone else in your family has been watching it live, it will go to latest viewed spot. There is no “watch from the beginning” option.
Yes, I’m absolutely sure. Thanks for asking. I’m done responding to you on this issue, by the way.
I found another quirk in the Roku Tablo App.
I have 3 shows setup to record back-to-back-to-back on the same channel. I also am watching these shows “Live” at the same time. When one show ends a few minutes later I will get kicked back to the Guide. I can’t select the same channel to watch live again. I have to restart the Tablo Roku App and then go back to the same channel to continue to watch the next program on the same channel. After that show is finished it will also kick me out back to the guide and I have to restart the Tablo app again to continue watching the next show on the same channel.
The recordings all seem to be fine and are not effected by this quirk.
Couldn’t you just go in from the library/recordings tab to start the next show that way?
I will try that the next time this happens… But the issue is it shouldn’t have happened in the first place. The channel I was watching should have just continued to run into the next show without getting kicked back to the guide.
The 3 shows I was recording back-to-back-to-back were on an OTA Channel (CBS). I’m using a 2 channel Gen4 Tablo running the latest firmware with a 4 GB external hard drive attached. Roku Ultra 4670X with 12.5.5 build 4174.46 firmware.
Are you clicking on the station name/ID when you’re watching these shows live, or clicking on the show title?
I’m clicking on the station name and nothing happens. That could be related to the other problem that occurs when watching a live channel for an extended time period that I (and others) have previously reported.
