Tablo Amazon Fire TV/Android TV App (4th Gen) Update (v. 1.3.0)

Tablo updated to 2.2.52.
I’ve got it connected to multiple Fire Sticks.
The main menu is different (left vs top) which I’m OK with but no big deal.
Anyways, about the same time we started having an issue where we’ll be watching a show and out of nowhere it’ll show the Tablo welcome screen then go to the main menu.
It’s happening on all of the Fire Sticks.
I’ve hard rebooted the Tablo.
I’m guessing that there’s a memory leak or something in this latest version.

Curious, is this where we’d leave ideas on how to improve the device as well?
Overall I’m pleased with the device (had it around 6 months) until now.

Thanks

The issues you mentioned are probably due to your app update and not your firmware update to 2.2.52. You may want to check out the following topic:

This is something we’re aware of and are investigating.

Moving this thread under the Fire TV/Android update to keep everything in one place.

If you would, we’d also like to know:

  • Were you watching a complete recording or was it in progress?
  • Was this a recording of an OTA channel or a streaming one?

All recordings are OTA. Have never recorded a streaming channel.

We believe they all have been completed recordings. The only time we watch something in progress is typically Sunday night. AFV, Bob’s Burgers. As far as we can recall (weren’t really keeping track) those last Sunday shows played fine. But we will keep track from now on.

Lately every week day while watching the various judge show recordings there will be one failure in one episode. The rest will play fine.

I believe this started only about a week ago.

Oh yeah one more thing. Sometimes (maybe 50% of the time) after the crash to the opening Tablo screen, it takes forever for Tablo to open again, if at all. We have been backing out to the Google TV home screen then reopening the app. I think it typically opens then on the first try. This is also something we will keep track of.

One thing that I’m curious about is wifi interference from an overcrowded channel.

I have a app that I installed on my pc 10 years ago that lets me see how many users are on each wifi channel. It also gives me the signal strength to my router of each router in the vicinity. I use it to put my router on the least congested channel where my router has the strongest signal.

It is called wi-fi analytics from Amped. Amped sells high powered wifi routers. The app may no longer available.

Also seeing random Tablo app restarts for no apparent reason. Both Google TV and Amazon FireTV stick. Everything up to date, restarted, rebooted, etc. Live OTA mainly. Maybe 1 of 10 recordings fail. Seeing some random trash in the display. Bad pixels here and there, and buzzy audio here and there. Not sure if its Tablo issues or just typical OTA trash.

Direct antenna coax feed to TV tuners exhibit virtually no serious issues. Random pixel or audio trash is much less common, but still happens occasionally. Never seems to interfere with reliability. Signal measurements with a real RF meter are all fine, both signal strength and SNR.

My 2 cents is this is just a continuation of reliability issues and Tablo’s limited ability to handle typical OTA signals in a robust way like virtually every built in TV tuner.

Well all “judge” recordings (5) today played just fine. Absolutely no hiccups. Will keep track of things and report anything as soon as it happens.

For me it is completely recorded shows from various OTA channels and a streaming channel (ION).

But it’s so random ‘if’ it happens because it doesn’t happen that often.

Yesterday the first recording played for about 5 seconds when the Tablo app did its restart. After that it played fine and all 5 recordings after that played fine as well.

What I like about the new release is that it is now inconsistent with the previous app and all the other apps.

I’ve had the gen 4 for over 13 months. I use internal storage which is usually empty. When empty the apps report that 115.5 GB is available. With this version of the app it thinks 500MB is used somewhere while all the others report 115.5GB

I don’t record streaming shows so I can just attest to it restarting while watching OTA shows.
We are not clicking a button on the remote when it happens (out of nowhere).

Another issue…
I don’t watch live shows much at all but wife claims that when she’s watching live shows, at the end of each show it kicks back to the guide.
I think that I got this to go away for awhile via rebooting the Tablo.
Is this issue reported elsewhere?

Last, it’d be nice 1) if it was easier to switch between the ‘last watched’ channels while watching the current channel and 2) able to watch show from beginning while it is still being recorded.
Is there a place to vote for features like these?

Thanks
Scott

#2 is already a feature. Start your viewing from the in-progress recording instead of your guide.

When she is on the live guide, tell your wife to choose the channel box at the beginning of the row, rather than the program. Then it will continue playing after the program ends. I learned the hard way

Thanks 269587 and tandelor.
You’re correct (on Fire TV which I understand this forum is for). I now see that the issue of not being able to start watching from the beginning is just on my Android phone (same version).
My wife provided add’l details (I’ll verify later)… that the show will return to the guide if you’re watching it live and have it recording. However, thereafter (so long as the following shows are not being recorded) the shows will continue / not return to the guide.
Thanks again

I’m still seeing app restarts while playing back OTA recorded shows. The playback will freeze and then go to the rainbow start up graphics and then the home screen. I can resume the playback from where it left off. This began with the app version that moves the menu to the the left side. I am using a ShieldTV Pro.

I have the same problem on a Hisense Google TV

I don’t use the guide filter of genre except at the holiday season. But the genre “holiday” doesn’t seem to exist on the gen 4. back to legacy.

I have the tablo restart issue also. It started when you tossed the horizontal menu and went to the vertical menu. Dont blame my app updates, dont blame my signal. Dont blame my firetv 4th gen. Dont blame my cleared cache. Blame yourselves and fix the problem.

Seven days ago I reported the “app restart” issue with my onn device. Have not had a single restart with it since. We watch lots of recordings every day.
