So Far, NOT so Good

@vgrund - Yeah, I feel your pain.  I really wanted it to work too.

I will say this… kudos to Tablo for letting these comments stand.  Other sites would be deleting them.  People can read them and make up their own minds.  I’m still hopeful for this company/product.

I’m always surprised to read posts like this especially with the 2 tuner mentioned.  My 2 tuner has been rock solid since April.  My wife uses it via the Roku app every day with no issue…She is completely non technical and has no issues.

Just as an FYI…I found making sure you have a multidirectional enhanced antenna.

A quick update… TWC cannot finish installation until the 7th of August (i started this process on the 14th of July!!!)  As soon as the installation is complete, I will try Tablo on a 5GHz channel and post the results.

@VegasSteve I received my Tablo 2-tuner today and wow, I can already see I am headed towards a return. This is an alpha product. It has so much promise but so many things are broken and/or downright primitive (like the Roku app)... Low Wife Acceptance Factor, I am not even going to show it to her. BTW I am a highly skilled IT professional.

Not an IT professional but definitely a tech enthusiast.  Although Tablo lacks some functionality of Aereo which we are converts from my wife has had no problem adapting to the changes.  I would not be afraid to set up my mother (techtard (currently using an HTPC I set up for her)) with this product.  If my mother could use it, who calls me monthly with problems on her smartphone but NOT her HTPC I think 90% of America could use it.

Millerprm,

Wireless is a finicky beast. The 2.4 band is crowded and full of interference…and the 5ghz band is notoriously short-ranged. Neither are really well suited for a scenario that requires rock-solid reliability, in my opinion. Perhaps you’ve mentioned this already…but which Roku model(s) do you have? Are they the models with an ethernet port? If so, I would (highly) recommend getting either MOCA adapters or Powerline ethernet adapters.

MOCA adapters ride the coax cables in the house…these are rock-solid and very easy to install if you’re coax network is already connected.

Powerline Ethernet adapters are good as well. I recommend 500+ mbps adapters…and also recommend those with the passthrough power-outlet that helps to reduce powerline interference. I use them for my Roku 3 downstairs…and have had no issues.

I had a bad Tablo, returned it and the new one is working well… apart from the many issues repeated throughout the forums.

My two cents, all of the apps need a lot of work.  Both in the areas of feature functionality, layout, etc.  as well as all of the bugs.

So… I personally would have a tough time recommending this to my “mom”, etc…  however, for a typical cord cutter, most of the issues are “ok” and can be worked around.  But I would hire some experienced people to work on the interfaces at least… sort of a mess.  Hoping that things will improve with new releases and time.

I think the device shows great promise.  And the other good news is that the competition has their own share of problems.  Victory IMHO, goes to the company willing to “fix things”.  Tivo could “fix things” by offering an antenna product that works worth a flip (they don’t really have anything)… I mention that one just as an example.

If Nuvyyo knuckles down and fixes most of their big issues and makes their apps rock solid, they could dominate the industry.  My two cents.  They might be dominating the cord cutters even today (those not doing a “roll your own” solution)… just saying that Nuvyyo has a chance to not only dominate a market, but grow the market.  Right now, the entry isn’t as “easy” or “seamless” as it needs to be… the ball is definitely in Nuvyyo’s court.

I was underwhelmed when the Tablo made its debut for me back in April.  But to Nuvyyo’s credit, they have a great product and continue to work on evolving it by listening to their customers.  What a concept!  Sure, it may have been considered an “alpha” or “beta” build when fist released but their focus was getting the product into their customers hands so they could begin the journey of making their product truly great.

There’s still some things that drive me nuts (the inability to mass delete shows, double-recording when shows are simulcast on US and Canadian networks) but I believe they’re almost there.  Yes, the Roku app isn’t the most polished - but then again most Roku apps aren’t!  The fact that my 4-year old twins can navigate the Tablo Roku app and find their daily fix of Daniel Tiger is good enough for me.

I look forward to the continued evolution and refinement of the Tablo platform and consider myself a staunch Tablo enthusiast.

@flatulator - Both of those ‘drive you nuts’ things are on the short-term roadmap.

So glad to hear the 4-year olds can easily navigate Tablo. Wouldn’t want to be between a pre-schooler and their Daniel Tiger. That’s dangerous territory

@Dafury I have a roku 2 and and a roku LT.  I was also having trouble with the pc app not streaming either, so it wasn't just my roku boxes. i know about 2.4 band being crowded and 5ghz band being short ranged, but my house is small and the router would be in the same room as tablo and only about 8ft away. the router i'll be using is an Asus RT-N66U and from all the reviews i read should be suitable for my purpose.
thanks so much for the additional info, but I no absolutely nothing about MOCA  or powerline Ethernet adapters. if you have any recommendations on an article that explains the basics well, i would be more than willing to start educating myself. thanks again.

Closing the loop here, I lingered with this product for an extra week while I traveled.  It did not change my opinion.  In many ways this experience refined my personal requirements.  I’m not very interested in streaming outside the home but I am keenly interested in a whole house DVR solution for OTA TV, for pause/rewind on Live TV and for scheduling and viewing recordings. Ideally, it would be delivered via the multiple Rokus I have around the house to actual televisions.  I really don’t care to watch that much TV on a mobile device.  If anything, I use mobile devices and laptops as a “second screen” to do other work while the TV is running.  The current state of the Tablo Roku app not very supportive of my needs.  I’d rather see a guide I can navigate for live TV, and overall a much more refined and seamless Roku experience.  Anyway, I returned it today.  I will keep an eye on how it matures because this product has a lot of untapped potential.  Best of luck to the product team!

I decided to roll with a Channel Master DVR+.  This is a single-TV solution, but it has the benefits of being simple and relatively seamless, with no ongoing fees.

Udate:  TWC finally finished the install almost a month after my initial request.  Now it was just a question of installing my router and putting tablo on a 5GHz channel and see how it worked.  Now the only thing other thing that could go wrong did.  I got a router that was DOA.  I have ordered another router and will connect and test my tablo as soon as it arrives.
