Sling TV

I haven’t had the buffering problems yet.  I will be using it extensively tonight to watch the Tennessee-Vandy basketball game.(go Dores!).

Oh one other issue I noticed they have Cartoon Network and Adult Swim combined into a single channel… Not sure I want my 7 year old watching that

@Jestep, that is actually how it works now if you you had cable/satellite.  Adult Swim is on late at night (usually 10 PM - 4 AM or something close).  So your 7 year old should be fine.

I am hoping this channel gets at least the 3 day treatment soon.  Right now it is live TV only.

The biggest reason I hear people hold onto cable tv for is live sports. So this gives people the ability to drop cable tv,

Looks like Sling is now trying to inject their own ads into the ESPN commercial breaks. It’s causing some issues right now, though. Rather than it being one continuous stream, it’s creating a separate stream (and buffering instance) during the commercial breaks…and then it buffers back to ESPNs stream when the break is over. It’s causing some errors when it flops between the streams. Odd that they didn’t iron this out prior to going open to the public.

Yes, I was having fits with this last night. I have the app sideloaded onto my FireTV and I was stuck in commerical hell. The commercials would start, sometime during the commercials they would freeze up. It would not return to the UK game. If I left the channel and went back, the commercials would start again, but I’d not get the show back. I finally had to leave the app and get back in.

Then I decided to try my Roku. (Since FireTV in not officially supported yet) First time I used Roku since I got my FireTV. It had problems too. It rebooted twice during commercial switching.

I ended up going back to the FireTV and putting up with it. Missed a lot of the game though.

@snowcat yea I figured that out after I posted. But I have a real problem with that, since my daughter (7 year old) has been sick she has been up later and I sure don’t want her to watch that late night crap. Whoever the “genius” was who thought this was a good idea should be … < Enter your own word :stuck_out_tongue:

Hopefully the buffering is just growing pains and gets sorted out. It should not happen with my connection bandwidth. I really want to like Sling TV. My wife pretty much has CNN, HGTV, or DIY on all day for background noise if for nothing else and I am looking forward to the AMC content. I am downloading Better Call Saul as I type this.

@Roraniel, I have a question for you.  It sounds like you have an unlimited data plan if she has those networks on with Sling all day long just for background noise.  Is this correct?

@wkufan92 Yes, SO FAR here in North Carolina Time Warner Cable has not introduced data limits on any of their high speed cable internet plans. It will be a shame if they introduce limits. For me It will take away the TV experience having to budget my data usage.

I also don’t know how long AT&T will let me be grandfathered in to unlimited data on our cell service. Even though I pay a little for for unlimited than a plan that fits our usage would cost I won’t give it up because once I give it up it is gone forever, but I fully expect a letter in the mail someday telling me it is being eliminated.

For those of us waiting to hear more on HBO streaming…

Looks like the estimates are $15-20/month and that would be a no deal for me

holy crap - thats a DEF no go for me too! Yikes

Ill stick to season passes on Amazon and Google Play.

If it was no commitment I could see waiting until the Game of Thrones season ended then catching that and newsroom all in one month for $20.  That’s cheaper than picking them up on itunes.

@jbanks25 – indeed it is.  and I would also do something like that.

Yesterday, I was watching a documentary on ESPNU and then later that night I watched the UT-Vandy game on SEC Network.  I was using my Roku3.  In both instances, a significant portion of the left side of the screen would flash pink or purple and then go back to normal.  It would do this every few minutes or so.  I also completely lost the game feed while the game was in overtime (grr), and I had to switch over to the WatchESPN app to see the rest (which worked fine).

I know SlingTV is having some growing pains since they opened it up to everyone, but it needs to be better than this for me to keep it for over a month.

@jbanks25 oooh, not a bad idea

I renamed the title since it is out of Beta now.

For those that like it or want to try it, there is a new promotion now.  If you prepay for 3 months ($20 a month + $5 for each additional package), you get a choice of one of four items.  You can get a free Roku Stick, a free FireTV stick, $50 off a Roku3, or $50 off a regular FireTV box.

If you already have signed up, just call the support line and have them put you on this promotion (I just did it with no problems).  If you haven’t signed up, it should be an option if you do.

I decided to get the regular FireTV box (I gave my FireTV stick away during Christmas).

The only channel I will really miss is Nat Geo and Discovery, anyone have any ideas on how to get those without going back to cable?

My week free trial is almost over. I haven’t watched much of the SlingTV in this trial period. I have no real problem with SlingTV it’s that I just can’t find more time to add these additional channels to watch. The only reason I could see adding it is at Football season to get Monday Night Football.

@larryg4b Same here, I let them charge me for a month just to see and then I canceled. Only person who really has been watching is my 7 year old for Disney…

Interesting fact, the channel does shut off after some time. What that time is I don’t know, but she left it on and went to sleep, when I saw it it was like in some kind of screen saver mode on the Roku app

SlingTV might be coming to Canada. The trial period can be watched in Canada via geolocking VPN or DNS service.

There is a sleep timer in the settings on Sling TV. The longest you can set it to is 4 Hours.
