Roku Tablo 4th Gen App Update (v. 0.8.801)

Hi folks,

We’ve released a quick update to our 4th Generation Tablo Roku App. It’s currently being rolled out, and should be available within the next 24 hours.

If you’ve already got the latest Tablo channel installed, and your ROKU is set to automatic updates, you should see version 0.8.801 shortly. You can also manually update the channel by going to SETTINGS > SYSTEM > SOFTWARE UPDATE from your Roku home screen, or press the star (*) key on your Roku remote while highlighting the Tablo app on your Roku home screen.

Here’s what you can expect:

Tablo Roku App (4th Gen) Update (v. 0.8.801) October 21st 2024

  • Maintains filled progress bar below fully watched airings
  • Fix for ‘boxes’ appearing in the player in place of numbers on Roku OS 14 devices
  • Fix for issue where the live grid could be unclickable during certain time windows

The only reason I bought a Tablo is for the ota feature so I could record and get rid of my cable box. You are costing me $60-$70 per month the longer you take. When will it be fixed? If i just wanted to stream without an antenna I wouldn’t need a Tablo. Let’s get this thing put to bed!

I completely understand the frustration… I am a full Roku house. 7 devices. Thankfully a friend let me have his ONN 4k box in the meantime…

HOWEVER… Tablo ain’t forcing you to keep paying for cable. Roku started this… Go complain to them about your $60 a month cable bill.

Happily enjoying OTA on latest Roku version… just not a “new Tablo” owner.

Having watched “stupidity” many times between vendors (blame game), both need to work to solve the problem IMHO. I’m actually glad to see Roku getting involved. And while it might be cool to think they’re doing it due to 4th gen Tablo, because there were some “other channels” also having issues, I have to wonder…

Time will tell. At the end of they day, personally, I want working OTA. As a consumer, I have choices that fix the issue. Onn could be that “fix”. Or, using something other than a 4th gen Tablo could be that “fix”, etc.

Tablo app and ROKU turning my Tablo into a hockey puck with this update. I’ve got 2 ROKUs, 3930RW and 3930X, both running Roku App 0.8.801-734366, and Roku OS 14.0.4, with Tablo Firmware 2.2.52. The X is hanging in there so far. The RW won’t:
Play recordings, it brings it up for seconds then reverts to the library
Tune to OTA channels via the guide, merely returns to the guide. Tuning to streaming channels via the guide still works.

I reject the premise that this is a Roku problem, as last I looked at the Roku development site, there were different APIs for different models. For example, Roku knows nothing about the Tablo guide, because I don’t think they’re in the business of customizing their API per app. Tablo is just a different source for audio/video playing via Roku. Just like Amazon Prime plays audio/video from their source, as does Pluto, as does every other Roku App.

I bought a Tablo for a friend last Christmas, and their’s has been a hockey puck since they upgraded to an Roku Ultra months ago.

Tablo, it’s on you.

And p.s. your regression testing for Roku targets is in serious need of a reboot

Same here, Tablo bricked functionality of 2 of my Roku 4K Express, while it still works on 4800x Roku. Extremely regressive by Tablo!

Works on Android, IOS, Newer Roku 4800x no issues, but the low end 4k Roku Express, its busted

I disagree about dismissing Roku because I think both parties are at fault because it takes two to tango here. Tablo is also at fault for releasing beta software to the public and Roku more than likely failed to notify any app developer of the new version of the OS release.

ROKU latest update didn’t break anything else but these low end 4k express devices, roku did it to make you upgrade

I have. Both vendors know they have a problem to resolve.

This seems to be going on for quite sometime, can you not find a way for the effected users to roll back the update until you figure this out?

I disagree with the premise that this is a result of Roku trying to force folks to upgrade for two reasons. First I’ve got several paid apps which still work fine on this platform. Second, I’ve got friends with Roku Ultras (newer) which no longer work either. In fact they experienced these problems months ago with the previous version.

Still stand by the absence of effective regression testing by Tablo. If the purpose of Tablo is to provide tuners for OTA channels and that function doesn’t work. And to provide DVR for OTA that won’t play back, then the two primary functions of Tablo are inoperative. That’s a pretty big fail.

If Tablo only wants to support specific Roku models, that’s fine, but advertise it that way so we’ll know.

Here’s a conspiracy theory for you to chew on. I have a ONN tv with Roku built in. It allows me to rewind live ota programs that I am watching. Rewind is only enabled because the program is being recorded to a flash drive that I can connect to the usb port. I can also connect a disk drive with videos and music to play on the tv. It won’t take much to turn it into a DVR and compete with Tablo and others in the market. You can bet that their DVR will be near perfect if they decide to take advantage of their potential. Can you imagine the power they would have and how much of the market the can control?

Just something to think about

I agree I don’t feel its right to blame Roku for this problem for every other app works perfectly on all 4 of my Roku units. I am guessing it has something to do with Tablo’s security between multiple devices on a network. It just amazes me there is so little effort to resolve the issue

@Kempkerr, how do you know that there is “so little effort” going into resolving the problem? Do you or someone you know work there? I’m no apologist for Tablo but goodness. I’m sure they are doing everything they can so they can move on to improving the system rather than dealing with fixing problems.

I think that internally they are loosing their minds over this. Roku has just over a 50% market share. That means that odds are that half of all NEW Tablo customers are using Roku. Just judging from my own internal collection of too many Roku, I would guesstimate that about a third of those new customers are having serious problems. Unhappy customers are five times more likely to leave a bad review, than happy customers are to leave a good review.

Yes, I believe that they are putting all possible efforts into solving this. I would not want to be working in Tablo’s programming department right now. They are loosing their freaking minds.

Do you mean that since appletv only has a 5%-7% market share all that R&D money and time spent on that app could have been used to make the roku, samsung, and LG apps better? And they might have had more and happier customers.

No, I was just saying that, statistically, a significant percentage of their customers, especially new customers, are unhappy. It was suggested earlier that Tablo was putting in “little effort” and I was saying that I don’t believe that is the case. I think they are scrambling over there, because this problem is impacting so many of their core customers. I would bet that most of their programing resources are being put into this problem.

I have no insider information at Tablo, but I know a little about IT based businesses.

You might find equally long forum threads about guide problems. And I’ve owned my gen 4 for over year and it’s still going on. So I’m not sure all that scrambling always solves problems.
