So I just bought a Tablo, really liking it so far, although it took me a while to get it rolling. My question is has anybody ever recorded something off Tablo and somehow played that recording on a tablet like an Amazon/Kindle Fire? Supposedly flash drives dont work too well on Tablos. Any other ideas? TIA
There is an app available for the fire tablets but I’m not sure about the kindles.
I can vouch for how well flash drives don’t work. It was far too slow for recording and watching at the same time. Tablo does have a couple of HDD/SSD recommendations. I used one of their suggestions for one device (WD HDD) and chose my own for another (Samsung SSD) – both worked very well.
This is a good place to ask these questions and hopefully others will chime in with what’s working for them.
I’ve never used an external hard drive,I’m not real tech savvy.I had a devil of a time just getting the Tablo to work.LOL. If I record something onto an external hard drive how do I get it to playback on the Kindle? Thanks.
Through minimal investigating on my part apparently all I need is a USB cord with appropriate ends to playback what’s on the external hard drive to the Kindle?
That’s okay. Most people here will do what they can to help. Although, as with any place there are a few trolls!
Congratulations for getting the puck up and running. I know it can be a painful process.
As for your recordings, trust me – even if your Kindle could read what’s on the drive you wouldn’t want to attach it this way.
Can you find the blue TabloTV app in your kindle store? This is the only way to watch your recorded content.
@tomkat Look for the app having the Gen4 icon in the attached image.
I found an old thread (actually on this website) from a guy who found a flash drive that that recorded stuff off Tablo and it played back fine, A Samsung FIT 128gb flash drive. I might buy one of those from someplace that will let me return it if it doesn’t work.
Forgot to mention I dont have the Internet on the KIndle, offline only. I want to record stuff on a flash or hard drive to watch on the Kindle when camping.
Trust me, this won’t work. The Tablo would have to format the flash drive with the EXT4 format.
First of all, I don’t believe that your Kindle can read this format. Secondly, even if it could read the drive, all you would see would be hundreds of small files, none of them with names that would make any sense to you. Only your Tablo has the mapping to know which files make up each show and what order to play them in.
So people recording stuff on Tablo are only playing that stuff back on Tablo? No other device?
Your Tablo must connect via wifi or ethernet directly to your phone, tablet, set top box or supported smart TV’s to play back your recordings. Recordings cannot be downloaded to devices for viewing when not connected to your Tablo.
Well that sucks. I hope someone invents something like I’m looking for. Would be nice to playback something you recorded on Tablo on another device.
I would bet that comment refers to the Legacy Tablo which stored in a different format. The Gen 4 formats in EXT4 (which is not a standard Windows format). Also, the video is stored in clips about six seconds long…yes, you read that right…six seconds long. Unless you can find some utility that can stitch them together you are going to drive yourself crazy trying to watch them.
The Tablo is just the recording device. You can watch your recordings on hundreds of different devices using the internet. This is its entire purpose.
You can successfully record onto a flash drive but it’s very limiting. I was able to record 4 things at once but unable to play back anything while even one thing was recording. As @KGBnut KDGnut mentioned, the Tablo uses EXT4 partitioning/disk format and would likely not show up even if you could plug it into your Kindle. Which has me wondering how you plan on doing that – I’m thinking you’d need an adapter to do this.
If all of this worked, you would have a terrible time trying to figure out which files were which show/movie. It’s a jumbled mess of numbers and dates/times.
Even if all of this worked, the minute you unplug your USB from the Tablo you risk it no longer associating with your puck. This means that you could watch your USB files somewhere, but you wouldn’t be able to plug it back in and record on it until you formatted it again.
I think your best bet would be to get a cheap android or fire tablet (I’m sure there are great Black Friday discounts going on right now) and watch your recordings that way.
I don’t understand your inability to play back anything while even one thing is recording. Please clarify
This was nearly a year ago was when I was using a USB 3.2 flash drive on my 2-tuner 4th gen puck. If I was recording a show, anything I tried to play back at the same time would give me buffering and stuttering issues.
I later installed an SSD on one and an HDD on the other and never had these issues again – although I have stopped using my 2-tuner altogether.
I was trying to avoid getting the Internet on the Kindle.I already have it on my phone,PC and now apparently on my TV. I’m an old fart and remember when we only had 4 TV stations to choose from. I been recording stuff on DVD-RW the 15 years or so and am ready to see the next “thing” whatever that might be.
All you needed to say was “flash drive”. That explains everything.
I will modify my original statement so it’s less confusing.
