Picture size un screen

My 2013 roku 3 and 2015 roku 2 don’t have this problem on my 55 inch sony when playing 720p and 480i live TV.

@zippy, I’ve got 3 Roku 3800X 3800RW sticks (circa 2019-2020) and they all have the issue.

The only way I can get 480 & 720 resolution live Tablo 4th Gen content to display correctly with those devices is to reset & restart Roku , start Tablo app and immediately navigate to a 480 or 720 channel. At that point things look good. Now navigate to a 1080 channel and that’s good too. BUT return to a 480 or 720 channel and it’s back to a postage stamp in upper left corner of screen.

LOL, That’s a lot of work to watch TV !

Rebooted the 2013 roku 3. played live TV 720p then switched to 1080i and then switched back to 720p. Worked like a champ. Same is true if I start with 480i-10801-480i

@zippy is your “Roku 3” by any chance an Ultra or other higher end Roku?

I believe the Ultras and plus models don’t exhibit this issue.

Do you have any suggestions regarding why I’m seeing this problem with my 38XX series sticks?

Yes I have the same issue using new 4th gen. 4 tuner unit with the Roku App. Updated both Roku and Software and then reloaded Tablo. Problem issue still remains.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait for Roku to fix this as it’s a problem with their firmware.

@Jack12 , I’ve been having the same issue with 3 of my older Roku sticks and have been fighting the good fight to get this resolved for several months over on Roku’s Community Forum.

I went out and bought a new Roku Ultra and new Roku 4K+ neither of those devices have the issue and work well with Tablo’s 4th Gen box. But I’ll be damned if I’m going to upgrade my other 3 Roku sticks just because Roku’s unwilling to fix their product!

Please do all of us suffering this issue a huge favor and post about it in the Roku Community website.

Feel free to add your legitimate gripe to mine and others here:

Thanks and good luck

Roku OS13 has started rolling out. They do this slowly, so very few will get it for a few weeks, then it speeds up. You can go into the settings every once in awhile and see if it will update. Not sure if that is more “aggressive” than the normal daily check.

A work around for the small image on the TV from less than 1080i TV stations. This problem does not present itself for all Roku models.

It’s well known that restarting the Roku allows full screen viewing if the Roku is restarted and no 1080i stations have been accessed.

One way to restart the Roku (and clear the cache in the device)
Do this from your Roku remote:
Quick press the home (looks like a house; top right of controller) 5 times
Press the UP button once
Press the LEFT (arrow) button twice
Press the RIGHT (arrow) button twice
Wait for the Roku box to reboot.

Go directly to the 720p station you want to watch.

When you say LEFT and RIGHT, do you mean FF/RW?

You must not have a roku since the d-pad buttons are clearly marked with arrows.

I can never tell if you’re being sarcastic. I know what different keys look like. To perform this reboot on my Roku devices, it’s done with RW and FF. I wondered if @Tabl0tvthing meant the others.

Roku had a number of trick modes for developers(or others) to use. They used this style of remote d-pad responses. I think roku did away with these in newer releases and went with having the actual device registered as a development device.

Before the gen 4 roku app I sopped using it on the legacy app. But I always wanted to watch the gen 4 app eat up memory before crashing but was to busy living life to put the effort back into it

Interesting. I know I’ve tried a ton of the old tricks and only a few worked. It sounds like this would depend on which remote/device you have… to know which button combo to press.

While I appreciate your post. That in fact is the known work-around.

Unfortunately, even Roku’s latest updates have not resolved this issue and yes newer Roku devices and higher end Roku devices (Ultra) do not seem to exhibit this problem.

Thanks for keeping the thread alive though:)

I sure do hope that this problem is resolved because I enjoy my Tablo but am thinking of a different solution because of this

@Loretano Thanks for keeping this post alive.

With all my worry about the recent Tablo Roku app update and the Roku OS update messing up my main TVs, (they did not). I have not gotten around to testing if the new software is even installed on my older 3800 Roku sticks let alone if it fixes the dreaded 480 & 720 resolution issue (video displays in extremely small box in upper left corner of screen with otherwise green screen background).

I’ll check it out ASAP report back here.

It would be VERY NICE if this is resolved but I’m not holding by breath

Just tried both of my Roku 3800 sticks. Neither has received the Roku 14 OS up as of yet, so both are still running Roku 13xxx OS. Both are running latest version of Tablo’s Roku app AND YES both are still showing 480 & 720 Tablo channels in small box in upper left corner of screen on otherwise green screen. :frowning:

If you mean the green screen and cornered image, hopefully that solution is picking up a different STB or at least upgrading your older Roku. This has been an ongoing Roku problem since almost the start of 2024.

Just saying, but this isn’t a Roku problem since other DVRs work just fine with Roku, even ones that offer raw ATSC 1.0 mpeg2, etc.

So, while “get a different STB” might be an immediate solution, there is still a problem.

So, I’d prefer this to read “this has been an ongoing Tablo problem since almost the start of 2024.”
