Out of home steaming coming to 4th gen

This still seems like a software issue. If VLC can supposedly play MPEG2 on TVOS, why can’t Tablo make it work?

I’m likely misunderstanding statements from other posts, but it sounds like what’s making it so difficult to stream the 4th gen outside the home is the need to transcode on the fly as well as general upload speed.

VLC is a video player. tablo doesn’t supply a video player and codec’s. If it did you would be paying a lot more for the unit. Instead it uses the video player that comes on each STB. STB’s supply a video player and almost all support HLS and DASH formats. The codec that the video player supports come from the STB manufacturer. In this case Apple. That is one reason the legacy gateway products used H.264 versus MPEG2.

Legacy Tablo worked, 4th gen doesn’t. I want a product that works

Legacy Tablo had out of home streaming as part of a paid subscription. The 4th gen has never had that as an option. It’s not a question of “works” vs. “doesn’t work”.

But @TabloCEO said it is coming. I am hoping it is after AppleTV app is released.

Well I don’t give a rats’ hiney for streaming outside my home network. I just want the audio from the local broadcast companies to work. They say they have some tricks to make it work. I suppose I can be patient since my legacy Tablo is still online and working perfectly. But mocking Apple users as clueless tech-wise is not only inaccurate but unnecessary. I may be a Boomer, but I was programming IBM mainframes with Hollerith punch cards in Fortran when you youngsters weren’t even a glint in the ol’ man’s eye. I’m plenty tech-savvy.

That’s weird. I didn’t say anything about streaming outside of you home network. But If you read the appletv tech specs what video codecs does it support? Does it support mpeg2? Does the tech spec specify what audio codecs it supports?

Since my spouse and I also worked for IBM on the 360 OS in the late 60’s, the trick is to write your own dump routine in binary and punching it out using the IBM 26 card punch.

I just gotta say… On the real, with all due respect… I had no idea how young I was in these forums.

Great Reagan debate quote.

I just want to have the capability of setting a recording of a show remotely. Streaming outside the home is a nice to have, for me.

If you guys want streaming from your Tablo while you are away ---- think home VPN. I can set one up on a home router in about 15 minutes. Now, you can be anywhere and your Tablo will think you are sitting at home. Connection is sure fire and works great. Much less Tech than having Tablo do it. It appears their hands are full fixing other things. Of course this assumes you have a decent phone and connection to your home internet/fiber like I do. In all honesty my remote viewing is as smooth as me sitting in my living room.

AirTV has out-of-home streaming, webapp for a PC or laptop, Apple TV app, and has the ability to add cable channels and merge with the over-the-air channel guide for a seamless experience. I’m using that with our Apple TV’s until TABLO4 app is available. More info https://www.airtv.net/

I have an AirTV 2, but its tuners are not as good as the Tablo Gen 4. Also, the user interface is lacking and very buggy and the tech support is pretty much nonexistent. To each his own. Glad it works for you.

I configured a L2TP VPN at my home… My wife and I can watch tablo remotely on our phones. Or Laptops with BlueStacks.

Nice job! If a person is at all a techie just handle this “remote” thing using proven methods. Quit messing with Tablo remote “stuff” while they fix the other things they are chasing down.

A side advantage is this personal VPN allows you to do all other sorts of stuff on your network, which you would be locked out of while away without the connection. Just a side benefit!!

Hello! I am new here. Switching from AirTV Anywhere to Tablo (got a legacy device directly from Tablo this week). Would like to be able to access the Tablo from our weekend home. How do I set up the VPN connection you mention? Any step by step directions would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!

I recently posted on Reddit how I did it with a Windows PC using Tailscale VPN.

Hope this helps you out.

Not a newer 4th Gen? It should Just Work, no VPN required.

Depends on which legacy device you have (network vs HDMI) and what streaming box you’re using (ex. Roku does not support remote connect, Amazon Fire Sticks do, etc.)
