NEW - Tablo Samsung TIZEN App (4th Gen) Update (v. 1.6.0)

Hi folks -

An update for the 4th generation Tablo app for Samsung TIZEN smart TVs is available.

The app will update automatically when it is made available for your television unless you have disabled auto updates on your TV.

However, certain TV model groups (mostly 2019, 2020, and 2021 model years but also some 2023 models) may experience delays in receiving the app update due to changes to the app distribution platform by Samsung.

UPDATE - As of January 14, 2025, all compatible TV model years should now have access to 1.6.0.

We have made inquiries with Samsung regarding these lengthy app update delays for some model groups, and we hope to have a resolution from them now that the holidays are over.

Hereā€™s what you can expect:

I googled this and see that a LOT of app developers are complaining about Samsungā€™s app approval process taking months (2 months in a lot of cases). Some of the developer responses suggest it might be because of a Samsung employee strike going on in Korea.

Anyway, will the GUI format be changed to the new side menu layout at some point in the future?

BTW, when I look at the current version 1.5.1 Tablo app settings on my 2019 Samsung HDTV, it is showing my device is running TIZEN 5, but the app version is not showing 1.5.1. Only the Samsung APPS store details show it as 1.5.1.

Also on 1.5.1, when searching through the TV Guide, it does not show the date anywhere except for the 12:00am of the day. So thereā€™s no way to jump days at a time like other platforms.

UPDATE
WOW! I received version 1.6.0 today, so Iā€™m checking it out nowā€¦

I just checked and I now also have 1.6.0 on my Samsung v6 Tizen. After trying 3 times to tune in the Vikings/Rams game and it freezing 3 times after 30-45 seconds, I went back to the Fire Stick TV Max, which is working just so-so. Itā€™s just remarkable how poorly the app works on my Samsung TV.

When selecting a recorded show, the GUI does not go to the latest un-watched episode, and the only way to figure out which one I have not watched is to select each episode to see the ā€˜Mark Episode Unwatchedā€™ button.

Also, when selecting an episode to watch that was previously watched to a certain point, the GUI just shows ā€˜Watchā€™ instead of ā€˜Resume Episodeā€™ like other platforms.

BTW, there is one feature of the Samsung Tablo app that I have always liked. It is the recorded programā€™s episode description that appears on the popup screen with the Watch button. I really hope that Tablo would bring this feature to all of the other app platforms.

This bug has existed for me in version 1.4.1 and has only gotten worse on 1.6.0. Frequently when I exit the Tablo app on my Tizen 8.0 TV, and then come back to the app later minutes or hours later, the Tablo app loads to a black screen with no sound, no Tablo animation. Around 50% of the time I can press the back button on the remote and the guide will come up, but other times the back button does nothing, and I have to reinstall the Tablo app.

Based on my experience with many apps on the Tizen O.S., it seems like apps donā€™t close when you use the home button to select a different app. They stay running or suspended in the background. If you return to the same app again you are usually right where you left off. But with Tablo, I am presented with a black screen if the app does not restart. Other apps handle this resume just fine, but Tablo does not.

Moving this to our Tablo Samsung TIZEN App (4th Gen) Update (v. 1.6.0) in order to keep all feedback together.

In my area, channel 34.5 does not have any programming data in Tablo, and due to the UI location of the ā€œAdd to Favoritesā€ button in Tablo, I am not able to add this station to my Favorites list, as there is no program information to click on.

The issue of this channel not having any guide data in Tablo, even though it has been a channel for a year or so, is a separate issue already reported to Support.

For me this is a primary channel. The main CBS broadcast tower is far away, and this 34.5 channel is a nearby tower rebroadcasting the same CBS station, so folks in my area can have good reception. I would like to have it on my favorites list. And eventually be able to record from this channel, when the guide data is finally added.

First, I am happy to finally have a version of Tablo on Tizen that will start from the beginning of recordings instead the end, but a detail was missed. I have the ā€œExtend Live Recordingsā€ setting of my Tablo turned on. I record a news program every day, that is a half hour long. Tablo records this program for an hour, since it considers it to be ā€œliveā€. If I start watching the recording in the second half of the hour while it is in the ā€œExtendedā€ part of the recording process, it will still start playing at the end of the recording, as it did in 1.4.1. Small detail but very annoying especially with the changes made to seeking, which is really slow now.

I too had to wait a while for the Samsung app update(I think)ā€¦At first I had ni fast Forward thumbnailsā€¦just bar slideā€¦Now the other day I noticed thumbnails that progress 10 seconds for each click of the remoteā€¦How can I check to see what version of the app I currently have on my Samsung Smart TV?.. I have my Samsung set on auto updateā€¦but not sure how to verify app versionā€¦Thanks for any help!

How do I check on my Samsung what my current app version is? Thanks!

@dmalone - Go to your Apps, then look for the gear at the top of the Apps page and click on it. You should find the apps manager there - select the TabloTV app and go down to View Details. Ours is v1.6.0. Iā€™m not sure if thereā€™s a manual update for this.

BINGO!!! Thank you very much! Iā€™m updated to the latest v1.6.0. This improvement will make it so much easier to watch!

Another bug, when watching a recorded program, the back button will stop working. Making it impossible to exit the recording. Even waiting for the recording to get to the end just stops there. No way to exit. The only solution is to unplug the TV to force the Tablo app to restart.

Also, it seems that this 1.6.0 version of Tablo fails to load very often. This could be just loading the guide, or loading a channel when selected, or the home page. I find myself waiting with the spinning circle on screen for minutes, and here too the back button stops functioning, so the only solution is to unplug the TV to force the Tablo app to restart.

Stations that broadcast in 16:9 ratio 480i still are squished. Tablo adds black bars to the left and right sides that should not be there. The same channels on the TVā€™s built-in tuner fill the screen.

Yet more bugs in 1.6.0. Today I tried rewinding live TV, which with the changes to seek features to accommodate the thumbnails on the recordings, is very, very slow to seek back. Going back a half hour took several minutes. Seems like there should be a different solution and speed when seeking in a live recording or live TV, where there are no thumbnails to see where you are in the program.

But that is not the bug. While I was watching at some point, I think around the top of the hour when the program guide changed, Tablo lost its place and skipped back 10 minutes or more and then would no longer seek forward at all. I was stuck watching from that back in time position that repeated what I had already watched, with no functional seek options. I could continue to re-watch from there, or my only other choice was to switch to Live, missing part of the program.

This version is still poor. The DVR functionality is lacking. There is only 1 small, static thumbnail while fast forwarding and ff is very slow. There is also no option to watch from the beginning of a recording. I have a 2022 Samsung Frame. Iā€™ll just use the Firestick I already installed.

My Samsung TV stopped connecting or even attempting to connect to Tablo. All I can see is the free online content, like any other streaming service. What happened to the App?
I signed up to the Beta, I hope it would fix this issue.

Another issue with 1.6.0, is pausing live TV. If you are watching a channel on a delay, you have either paused or rewound live TV, and the top of the hour arrives and the guide data changes, Tablo is unable to cope and switches back to the live TV, skipping everything you had not watched yet.

To try to explain better, if I was watching a channel with a 10 minute delay, and a different program was to start at the top of the hour, and the time is within that first 10 minutes of the new hour. When I press the button to seek, the seek bar and guide data if for the new program, not the previous program that I was still watching. Any button presses after that jumps to the live position of the new program. Basically the seek bar and UI loads the incorrect guide data and position in the program.
