I finally got the .54 update last night. I’m not sure why it took two weeks to roll it out, but I’m glad to finally have it.
I got the pop-up message on my devices (I was checking on both my phone and my Roku Ultra at the same time and they both had the message). I ran the process from my phone so I could walk around the house while it was running and easily check on its progress. For me the update went relatively smoothly, download and install portions were really quick. The part that went slowly was the reboot, enough that I started to get a little worried, but it came through. Overall, the whole process took less than ten minutes. I then immediately switch on the new ACM setting, and started a new test OTA recording.
I ran around the house and check all of my TVs. I only had two that were still giving me trouble. These were older Roku on older TVs for which the ‘workaround’ did not work. Both of these TVs now work with OTA channels. They can play NEW recordings (made after the update), but CANNOT play the pre-update OTA recordings, as expected. Those pre-update recordings play just fine on all the other TVs.
So far, everything is working to my satisfaction. I don’t notice any other changes. Some folks mention some new FAST channels being forced to the top of the guide. I didn’t see that. I did run a new channel scan and some new channels appeared, but they defaulted to ‘un-selected.’ I added the Christmas channel to see if there was anything good, and it was then added near the top of my guide.
Just thought I would share my experience. For me, overall, I have been very happy with my Tablo. No, it is not perfect and I have experienced some of the frustrations discussed here, but for the most part I turn it on and it works. It is now where I watch most of my programming. And, for the price, I can’t complain.
I received the 2.2.54 update about two days ago (I checked the update status and it said an update was available). I did the update with trepidation afraid it would break something that was currently working. The update went smoothly. With previous firmware updates I sometimes had to to power cycle the Tablo to finish the update. So far I haven’t had any problems. I am hoping that a problem is fixed with closed captioning where CC would not show up or would disappear after the first playback. So far so good.
I am having to power cycle the Tablo every morning to get it to connect now on WiFi. Going to hardwire and see if that changes anything. Didn’t have issue before update
Can you explain what problem the nightly audit is to solve? I am interested in understanding how this will impact the channel guide. For example, if I exclude a channel, will the nightly audit add it if it is a strong signal?
I am running a 4th gen Tablo on several different platforms, Apple TV, Google TV, Amazon TV and a Directv Stream Ospry/Gemini running Android TV. All of them work well but I do have one annoyance. The channel number font in the DirecTV stream app is terrible. I do not notice the issue on other platforms even on the same TV. It’s a white with red outline that bleeds into the blue background. Its not my Sony OLED TV because the only time I see it is on the DirecTV Ospry box.
Any chances of getting you to change the channel number font on this device?
Okay, got the 2.2.54 firmware update installed. Enabled audio compatibility mode for my Roku Express + (stereo) LG TV. Verified Tablo app is up to date. Roku audio output is set to “stereo”. Tablo hardware is connected via ethernet.
Now: OTA channels don’t crash, and the audio is good, but the OTA video is unwatchable due to stuttering and macro-blocking (pixelization). I’ve verified that the antenna signal is good using my Roku Ultra + Visio TV. Streaming channels continue to work fine on the Roku Express.
I didn’t know DirecTV had its own streaming app. Is that for folks who have DirecTV without the dish? I always assumed that those folks had a Roku or other off-the-shelf device. I find it even more interesting if DirecTV’s streaming device supports other suppliers’ apps.
By the way, I got my Tablo when I told DirecTV to get lost and removed the dish from my roof. Tablo is saving me about $150.00 each month.
Yes the Directv Stream Osprey/Gemini box is a Android TV device and you can download apps from the Google Play Store. It can be used for satellite or streaming. I dumped satellite in 2016 but last year signed up for streaming. The Tablo is used mostly for local channels DirecTV doesn’t carry in my area.
Now that I have updated to 2.2.54 and all my devices are working correctly, is there any value to UNDOING the workaround that we all tried several weeks ago? You know, the one where we all changed the setting in Roku for Digital Output Format? For me, that going four out of my six TVs working until .54 was released.
I don’t want to re-break Tablo’s fix, but if it won’t hurt that, is there any advantage to the other Roku apps in switching back?
By the way, I was mildly concerned about experiencing a decrease in sound quality when switching to ACM mode in the new Tablo update, but I have found no difference. Keep in mind, I do not have any sort of surround sound system, just the speakers built into my TVs… and I have old man ears.
Don’t know if it wa intentional but after the firmware update the Tablo app on LG TV’s is working much better. FF is actually FF again. App is much more responsive. Thanks.
Way to go, tablo! You guys really screwed the pooch on this one! After tablo app update for roku and firmware update, the few problems that you managed to resolve over the past year seem to be back to plague your “Not ready for primetime” P.O.S! Not to mention the fact that your unit still has to phone home every hour at the top of the hour, causing the unit to show a spinning circle for sometimes up to 8 minutes before it even locks in the channel ! Seems like you only have 1/10th the server capacity that the platform really needs considering the hundreds of thousands of units trying to phone home at the top of every hour. (Especially during primetime)! I thought you people posted a few months ago that you were working on a fix for the puck so it would work quicker and better without having to phone home before tuning channels… where is the “No phone home fix”? How about next time you roll out a new product, you make sure to finish beta testing before you sell it to a trusting and unsuspecting public? Can we say class action??? After a whole year of total aggrivation, I am ready, willing, and able to take a hammer to the disgusting, vile, little demon puck! GET IT RIGHT, TABLO!!!
I’m watching CFP with all software, firmware up-to-date and I had a few issues: (1) the guide started two days into the future; (2) later I had pixelation, stuttering, and “try again” dialogue; (3) After the “try again” I had ads run over live TV coveraage (heard the football, saw the add, but didn’t hear the sound of the ad); (4) lost sound on the football game (local ABC channel). I thought most of this was fixe, but alas. I’m just letting you know what I have experienced. This is an an up-to-date Apple TV purchased in late 2021, so I think it is HD, not 4K.
8 minutes spinning to lock on a channel… At the top of every hour. I have not experienced that ever. My wife records and watches her prime time shows without a hitch… daily.
OTA and Fast channels lock in fine and record.
I don’t really understand your phone home issue, how this affects your tablo experience?
Class Action Lawsuit over a $99 device, ok, have fun with that?
How about you get your setup right and it will operate properly more than usual.
In my case (Roku ultra) the time to acquire the app varies considerably. Probably 80% of the time the app opens in less than five seconds the remaining 20% is quite variable. But usually it opens within a half minute or less. This morning a rare situation when even leaving it for five or six minutes it still had not opened and so I simply closed the app fired it back up and it connected in less than five seconds. So my observations have been extremely variable. How much of it is the network between me and Tablo (one gigabyte, Internet here), and how much of it is lack of server capacity I can’t say. But again I must stress that it is still an excellent product for the small amount of money upfront and no monthly subscription. fees. Just my $0.02 worth
