I saw a post here…Previous recorded shows with 4thGen
But wanted to make sure nothings changed…
So you still CANNOT move a legacy Tablo’s hard drive to a 4th Gen Tablo, correct?
That right?

That’s what I read as well, nothing changed and I never saw any movement by Tablo in that direction. If you move the drive, it will need to be formatted by the 4th Gen, thus wiping out your programs. I just got a Gen 4 and am running them both. The legacy no longer records more shows and can then be placed anywhere (i.e., no antenna needed), so I’m working my way thru them.
As in, you’re watching all the recordings on the old tablo?
Yep. I’m watching what I had on the old one, but recording going forward on the new one. Kinda clunky, but it works.
You can move the drive but all your old recordings will be deleted.
Not only that, but if you cancel your Legacy Tablo Subscription, you won’t be able to access your Legacy Tablo at all. Happened to me. I was going to work through all my old shows on the Legacy but foolishly cancelled my subscription thinking I didn’t need it anymore as all new recordings would be on the 4th Gen.
Does feel a bit short sighted not to provide a solution or even a temporary transition. I’d get a Gen 4 but don’t want to lose some memorable recordings like sports events.
IF you can find someone who has the legacy Tablo program that allows you to off load your recordings to your computer, that might be a solution. Not only that, but you would then protect those memorable recordings from a Tablo/hard drive failure. I wish I could find the program, but I archived it somewhere and darned if I can.
Yes, I remember that discussion on an applet or program to do this a few years ago. Likewise, I can’t seem to find it anywhere. Think it was called Tablo Ripper, but no luck getting a copy. Thanks for the assistance.
There are other tools but this is the one I’m familiar with. Works well for me. Not sure if it’s still being developed or not.
mbellaire – Thanks for the info and link. Indeed, Tablo Tools is working to transfer my legacy recordings. I look forward to having these in a format I can watch and backup elsewhere.
This is the first I am hearing of “Tablo Tools.” It looks very impressive. Am I correct that it is only for the Legacy versions and will not work with the new Gen 4?
I believe Tablo Tools is for Legacy only.
I’m in the same situation. I bought the new 4 tuner version and I transitioned over to it, but I keep the old dual lite around just for watching the older recordings (and so I can watch my local TV channels when I’m out of the house….honestly this is the feature I miss the most)
