I am currently using a Asus RT-AC87U which is a SOLID router. I can’t move the Tablo because the place its located is currently where I get the best OTA reception.
The router is top of the line (2.4/5GHz AC MIMO) and works flawlessly with my iPad.
The wired ethernet is only 10/100 which is worse than connecting at 2.4/5GHz “N” wirelessly.
The Roku 3 is also a dual band “N” device.
The issue lies somewhere in the Tablo app on the Roku since its workign fine on my laptop (web access) as well as my iPad.
Maybe Tablo needs to make their own HDMI receiver.
That would eliminate problems 100%.
They could make a small device that only picks up a signal from their DVR and it would rule out 3rd party manufacturers firmware revisions as well as player compatibility.
I use the same router. One thing to try is shutting off dynamic QoS. Easy setting on the router and might be the source of your current issues. Also make sure you are on the latest router firmware. Some of the earlier versions had some serious flaws. You can find that here ||ASUS Global.
Having the Tablo wired is usually the best. You should be able to run the clients wireless.
I’m tempted of possibly doing one for myself using the $5 Raspberry Pi Zero. A dedicated Tablo client on a credit card sized device. Slap it on the back of the TV with tape
No, no, no! Not the dreaded cable. Try the Nexus. I believe you can order at Best Buy and Walmart for $50. Turned my Tablo experience from frustration to delight. Easy remote control operation for happy wifey.
With my Tablo wired to my router and my NP sitting wireless and comfy between router and Tablo I experience zero LPW’S or long delays. This was NOT the case with Chromecast and apparently with many Roku users.
QoS was a long shot. Personally I gave up on trying to get the Roku to work properly with Tablo and went with a Nexus Player. I have zero playback issues on that with it wireless AC and the Tablo recording at full 10Mbps.
The last Roku update took care of the months long LPW issues for me, but it still reboots on FF occasionally.
The Nexus is my primary streamer now, but I still have the Roku connected in case I want to watch something that it not available on the Nexus.
Thanks for your help. It was a good idea. I am just frustrated that something you pay $200+ for doesn’t work the way they claim it will and their entire support staff takes off work at a time when a lot of new customers are having problems.
You seem to be causing more problems here than anyone. Reverse trolling. If you don’t have anything constructive to add to the conversation then stop replying.
I bought this DVR to make OTA viewing easier and its just more difficult.
Just because you are not having a problem doesnt mean others are not.
I’m really hope Tablo support gets back to you. For the vast majority of users, we have OTA DVR and Tablo did make it pretty easy for us. And I know for sure they want it to be as easy for you too.
Thank you. Once I finally hear back, I’ll be sure to post what was done to (hopefully) resolve the problem.
I’m glad some people here are trying to be helpful. It seems that most are flaming people all the while pretending that they are being helpful. Pots calling the kettle black kinda thing.
Yes it is very frustrating. There are some very long heated threads here from Roku users. Even so I do understand the difficulty Tablo is having fixing these. Roku, and other streamers, are moving targets and they have to adapt to every firmware update released. The Roku issues are particularly difficult for them as they don’t affect every user. You’ll see plenty of “it works for me” posts on Roku issues. So Tablo has the double problem of an issue that is hard to reproduce on a platform they don’t directly control.
Given all that, I agree with you, it should work as advertised.
One last thing I don’t know if you have tried. Have you tried reducing the Tablo record quality? The 5Mbps setting might help. In some cases the lower Mbps settings can reduce or eliminate LPW issues.
Thanks for the reply. I’ve tried reducing the quality as you described.
I’m not even able to get live TV working on it, let alone actual recorded TV.
I was having these problems before and after updating to Tablo and Roku firmware versions as well.
With Tablo there is really no difference between live and recorded. With Live TV it trans-codes and records it the same way as with recorded shows. That’s why you get a delay when starting a live show. It has to buffer ahead before it can stream it.
Wiring the Roku is about the only thing left to try and that may not be an option for you. I know when Tablo was working on the last update they were getting different results for the wired vs Wifi users and released a few betas where one would work well and the other would not before they settled on the release. All said, this is probably not going to be a fast fix for you even when support responds.
I did see that you just bought the Roku so returning it for a different streaming device might be the most expedient solution.
