Yeah, remember that even Tablo destroyed this for OG users. Tablo of the very distant past is much different from old Tablo which is radically different from today’s Tablo.
Tablo, we learned about branding and names from Roku, Intel and AMD.

I am not sure about the fast channels on Gen 4, I could look it up, but I am pretty sure they are like the ones on Sling. TV freestream. With that they give you 10 hours of dvr. The Gen 4 as I have read seems like it has a lot of problems that I don’t want migrated to my Legacy.
A good source of antenna information is, of course, Tyler the Antennaman. He recently posted a video about websites that give out bad info, and other basics about getting an antenna.
Plus, he has an Amazon store mainly with products he was reviewed and think are good:
That’s a relative statement. Depending on your antenna strength, Wi-Fi, and which STB ecosystem you’re in, things can go in either direction.
There is so much more to the product then antenna strength, WiFi, or STB ecosystem. Have you tried to access your gen 4 with the internet down?
Yeah, that can be a problem. I haven’t had any problems if I was already in the app when it went down. I do agree that this is something that Tablo should change about their product but I don’t consider this under the “a lot of problems” category. This is something Tablo has said doesn’t work, not a bug or random issue. I was thinking more in the lines of a complete upgrade, not under an app/firmware situation and some of my comments may not apply. It’s hard to guess how it could affect legacy devices – they’re an entirely different product.
Might the gen 4 phone home because of viewer data and FAST information. I’ve never had a legacy app where I had to login.
You do realize that there are large sections of the country with inconsistent internet and power. You could find older threads with suggestions for UPS solutions. hurricane season is here. How long was the power out in Houston?
Don’t Roku devices need to have an internet connection to show you the Home Screen? If you can’t even access the app, what does it matter?
I realize a lot of things… but I’m sure that if there’s long power outages, keeping your Tablo up and running is probably the least of your concerns.
But there are workarounds for both of these situations. Switching to your phone’s hotspot, for example.
Complaining about the Tablo’s usefulness during life threatening situations, is null and void, my dude! There isn’t a place where Tablo is recommended for those situations.
If I was doomsday prepper… Tablo wouldn’t even be on my list, hell, not even a DVR.
I’m thankful that I have never been in a Houston situation. We had a very large derecho come through and lost power for 4 days. Others lost power for 2 weeks. I had a solar powered generator at the time… Watching TV was never on my mind. We made sure our phones were charged, cycled the fridge, and tried to keep the lights on in the evenings.
Some depend on linear TV for emergency information. And those who live in those areas don’t depend on the fridge. Cell phone service goes down. They have a stock of staples. And a generator.
Then they’ve probably got the whole internet issue taken care of.
I do understand how difficult it is to switch a cable over from a puck to a TV for these cases.
tablo is a gateway. Many people choose it so that the antenna doesn’t have to be wired to each or any TV. Of course dropping a coax down from the attic is a fun thing to do in your spare time during an emergency. If you have a spare extra long coax cable.
Y’know, you’re generally a smart guy, but sometimes I’m baffled at how complicated you make things. If I lived somewhere that this could happen, I would definitely have more than one way to watch TV – the cheapest being a flat antenna for when all hell breaks loose!
I have one but have found it hard to connect it to by phone and tablet. Phones and tablets suck a lot less electricity then a large TV.
Nope, my Roku Ultra works just fine without the Internet.
Yeah… I was thinking about that last night and could’ve sworn it worked recently without internet. I think that’s an OS 13 change. Thanks for the confirmation! I got rid of all but one Roku and if I’m not testing something it sits in a drawer… Lol
For sure, FireOS devices still need an active connection. Regardless, there’s not much you can do without internet. If Tablo were to fix this piece of code, it would definitely be a game changer for their long-time users. Maybe even get them to upgrade units that would likely last longer on UPS backup!
Recently ATT was laying fiber in my neighborhood cut my Centurylink, legacy Tablo with Roku worked for the 3 days till fixed.
I thought for legacy fire tv app, to start app without the internet you went to setting/applications/manage installed applications selected the app and launched it
Wow. I stand corrected twice in one day! TY zippy, I did not know about this trick. Since everything but VLC needs the internet I never thought much about it.
I’m with you guys when it comes to the 4th gen calling home to open the app. We know this can be done because they’ve changed the way it handles a server issue on their end.
As for your worries about the upcoming FW update, Tablo has stated that you’ll be able to use either the legacy or new app, so I would think this would still allow you to connect to your older devices when the internet is down, provided you use the older app.
Unless you are trying to save $4.20 per month why would a person happy with their legacy device upgrade the firmware to add more functionality. If I remember correctly the gen 4 uses a more powerful cortex A55 CPU while the legacy devices use the less powerful cortex A53.
