Help Shape the Tablo Roadmap

I challenge you :crossed_swords: - create a topic explaining what’s not to complain about how tablo DVR works for you. It’s been discussed, there’s no straight line comparison between OTA DVRs.

So, either, why was/is tablo your choice… or how do you get around your perceived annoyances/problems.

Purchased through authorized dealers, it comes with a 30day return if it’s unacceptable, so instead of venting about it’s shortcoming… can you create a topic highlighting your tablo and dealings with it???

Don’t need a topic for it. First problem was related to CBS 5 in my area causing constant reboots. Only after posting here did I find out why and later the issue was resolved.

Second problem was excessive heat on the Quad for the hard drive, problem solved by modifications to the device.

Third problem was commercial skip failures which after some discussion Tablo support acknowledged the issue and it appears good now.

So in conclusion fix it yourself or bug the crap out of everyone until it gets fixed.

What else would a support forum be for?

yea, they specifically don’t call it a support forum. This really isn’t supportive…

as with your responses imply - I figured it out… figure it out for yourself, I got nothing to say.

How about split screen? Two tuners so two shows side-by-side or over and under?

You can do that manually on your PC. Just open up as many browsers as you want. Volume control is by browser, so you can have one on normal volume, and the others on silent or low volume.

Yea, but you only get 6 streams*. I had 2 live (dual lite) and one recording. Stoped the recording and that window and one of the live streams pooped with - image
so I kind of could, but I would need realistic expectations – Actually I have 2 TVs mounted on the wall, maybe that’s why I wouldn’t bother. But it may be just what someone needs.
*some restrictions may apply

What is your point here?

Oh, I get it. You just want to be utterly ridiculous and nonsensical.

I was just responding the other sarcasm. Didn’t mean to detract. (in short, the idea that Tablo needs to be exactly like other DVRs is actually just plain wrong, but I understand the tiny feature improvement requests)

No argument about multiple browsers open, but I was thinking more of the actual TV screen rather than a computer on tablet device.

my computers are connect to actual TV screens! If you have a 60" or so TV… why would you watch a show on a tablet? (ok, there are reasons of convenience)

I doubt it’s a patent issue, since there is clearly a technical issue. They would have to use a second tuner during the entire live stream to generate the thumbnails. And that’s just the first issue to solve in order to implement that feature.

I’m not sure Roku has the functionality to play two videos at the same time. It would be cool to see on Android TV, Fire TV, and Apple TV though.

Only use I can see for split screen is sports, but if you like sports that much just watch the game and stop watching something else. I’ve had split screen ability since the 90’s on pretty much every TV I’ve owned, never used it once.

Remembering my old U-verse (IPTV) days. You do get spoiled when you can put a 4-up display with different channels in each.

(noting that tuner math applies in the case of OTA and tuners)

And what do you watch? Lots of sports?

Sometimes channel surfers will want to check on news/other program… or as you mentioned, sports, while watching something else. But, in all fairness, much less of a problem with DVRing. It’s a feature that most people don’t think about, but in all fairness it’s because they there used to it not being there (the ole “stop wanting a feature you’ll never get”… just settle sort of thing).

I was just pointing out there was a time and a technology… of course, if you’re keeping up with the news, maybe Uverse will come back to life (?).

My version of picture in picture is using a laptop or tablet while my wife watches what she wants. News from a single source is just bad news. I like to check and cross check everything. The fury tail animal news station comes to mind.

Who doesn’t mess with a tablet or laptop these days while watching TV…

I watch movies, TV mostly watches me.

Again, I think it was “cool technology”, it was very very cool and arguably much wanted at one point. But maybe we left those times behind as we couldn’t provide the answer (Apart from U-verse. We actually owe a lot to that project btw).

Of course, given how ATSC 4 works… maybe this is a feature coming everywhere soon. I predict cheapy DVR devices out the wazoo as it becomes more commonplace.

Mostly what has been covered but I will add a few:

Recording back to back shows on the same channel without having to use additional tuners. Example, show A on channel 2.1 ends at 9:00PM then show B starts on the same channel. Recording both shows would use the same tuner(s).

The ability to set recording quality on a per show basis. Users may want to have the quality for shows with no fast action scenes set lower in order to free up tuners those that do. Additionally some users may prefer one quality for their regular shows and a different quality for events such as sports or music shows. Users should not need to go into main settings and manually have to switch back and forth and potential cause a tuner conflict latter if the user forgets to switch it back.

The ability for client to see multiple Tablos gained together and shown as a single Tablo to the client devices. Some users need to have antennas in directions to receive all their channels.

I am not sure if the currently available software tools allow it, but I would like to see the ability to connect to something like a Raspberry Pi to offload or add functions to the Tablo. I am thinking of things like:

Offloading thumbnail generation to free up a tuner. I wounder if it even might be possible for the Pi to generate the thumbnails in near real time?

Another thing I was thinking was if it could act like an adapter for media servers that cant work with Tablo like Emby.

For future hardware stronger tuners with better multi path rejection. Encoders that are individually strong enough to encode at max quality and generate thumbnails in real time.

How do you know that it’s not using the same tuner? I have 3 2-tuners. When I record 2 shows from 8-9 and another 2 shows from 9-10 my unit doesn’t barf from lack of tuners. So as long as the 2 back-to-back recording work I don’t care which tuner it uses.

The ability to set recording quality on a per show basis.

I really like this idea! :slightly_smiling_face: Add it to the ‘Options’ button settings.
