My Tablo unit was slow to respond with the apple tv app and all. The performance was lagging at best. I uninstalled the apple tv app, reset the device to factory and let it pull down the latest and greatest firmware. Then reinstalled the app and wow what a difference that made. I would actually recommend it now.
That’s great but what happened to your recordings?
Did you do the factory reset on the apple the or Tablo?
lost those but it was worth it for better performance.
tablo but also deleted the app from the apple tv and phone and started from scratch
A factory reset on any piece of computer equipment can clean out little fragments of code left behind during various updates. And, yes, these can slow down as system. While it shouldn’t be necessary, it is not a bad idea if you are having unresolved problems. You just have to keep in mind that it will be like unboxing a new Tablo. You will need to do all the setup again, adjust all your settings, scan and select your channels…etc. Also, you will lose all your recordings, even if you have an external hard-drive. I believe that the Tablo will force you to re-format the external drive when you connect it.
This whole thing doesn’t sound right. I’ve only had to FR my tablo 2 times since I had it. Besides firmware updates, I’ve manually rebooted it maybe 3 times.
Unless you have a faulty device, there has to be other factors involved.
@Wjbrown I am glad you made progress with your Tablo issue.
IMO the tiebreaker will be watching to see if the original problems return, after doing the factory resets.
Probably we’ve all had devices that work for years w/o factory reset. It “can’t hurt” to reset to factory, but that factory reset is not SOP for any device I know of.
We’re glad the issue is resolved.
Quick note though, we recommend a factory reset only after all other troubleshooting has failed. As mentioned above, you’ll lose all your recordings, it’ll also clear log files that support might be able to use to isolate the problem you’re facing.
For basic troubleshooting we’d recommend:
- Clearing your app cash
- A soft reset: Holding the reset button on your Tablo and quickly letting go, then waiting for it to reboot.
- Deleting and reinstalling your app.

I’d opt to keep my cash but I’ll happily clear my cache.
As an IT admin i do find its needed to do a fresh install after so many updates, etc.
this was the first and after all the apple tv testing and all i figured it was needed. its been working great since.
I must be lucky because in many years of using Legacy Tablo’s I have never needed a FR. The very few instances I have faced have been solved by unplugging/rebooting, and those are far and few between.
Curiosity question though: is it possible to disconnect the SSD before doing the FR thereby keeping the recordings when re-attached? Never thought about it. I don’t keep hardly any recordings because I watch my shows pretty quickly.
Your drive will still have the recordings, but the Tablo will not know they are there and therefore won’t be able to play them. When you do a factory reset, you wipe out all stored data settings on the Tablo including it’s list of recordings. So, inorder to free up storage space, the harddrive should also be reformatted.
Must be nice. We have to reboot our 4th gen several times a week. Very dissatisfied with the stability of this device.
Having a solid home network/wireless network I found is key. Good RF signal. I’m a Network Engineer, so it’s I think that’s the reason it has been stable for me.
Definitely not my issue, it connected to a gig switch 5 ft away by with a network cable and not WiFi and I have gig up and down Fios at home. All my issues were resolved with a fresh install of both the Tablo firmware and the iOS apps.
