Lon mentioned lagging/buffering.
I would be extremely happy if my Legacy OTA Tablo only lagged that much going from one channel to another.
When I switch from channel to channel the spinning circle shows up for 5-6 seconds maybe even more, never actually timed it…
I like the layout much better than the Tablo in the Scheduled section. A nice list instead of the stupid pictures.
No gateway is a deal breaker for me at this time.
The ZapperBox’s talking to each other could eliminate that issue, but would incur a very steep upfront cost for 4 TV’s ($1,100).
They would have to distribute the recording around to all boxes to minimize the chance of recording 2 on one device and possibly preventing user for watching a live show.
It would also have to the Scheduled and Recorded menus be common, and be able to watch a recorded show that was recorded on a ZapperBox in another room.
Lon said they will have gateway in the summer (but doesn’t handle encryption), so I think I will get one and see if I like it better than Tablo.
$30 a year for a guide is better that $4.99 a month.
Will also have to see what HDHomeRun comes up with.
It sure sounds like it. The key will be whether gateway (networked) devices require the other “nodes” to be a like piece of hardware (i.e. 2 ZapperBox units) or whether some streaming boxes may be able to meet the hardware/encryption requirements.
I don’t like how you must be connected to the internet to watch a recording you already made. That appears to be something they are “working on”.
I like the possibility of multiple Zapper boxes being able to “work together” in a smart way if that’s truly what they plan. I don’t think Tablo does that or perhaps I’m mistaken? My understanding is with Tablo you can schedule a Tablo to record something but it doesn’t check with the other Tablo to see if it’s already recorded or if the other Tablo has a better signal. I don’t believe I can record something on one Tablo then watch it well the app is connected to a different Tablo. I would have to manually select the other Tablo in the app first.
A “perfect system” for me would be using one interface and seamlessly access all my DVR recordings without really caring which DVR is doing the recordings or tuning the channel. For me that would be amazing because I could attach one DVR to an antenna facing North and the other to an antenna facing South. Right now my “perfect system” would require me to buy expensive filters before combining the antennas and routing them to my 4 tuner Tablo. The alternative as I understand it is manually switch the app between 2 different Tablo. Bonus point if at some point I can upgrade my current Tablo firmware then buy a second Tablo and have seamless integration between the two. Currently that actually requires I have two completely separate apps and it would just be confusing to have them side by side. I don’t want to explain that to my family and get complaints when they open the wrong one.
@TabloTV
It sure would be nice if Tablo implemented a similar system! I’m still holding out hope for your ATSC 3.0 DVR.
It’s my opinion that any ATSC 3.0 in 4K will be DRM’d and I think the trend will eventually place DRM over all ATSC 3.0 content, even SD stuff. But, we’ll see.
There’s the whole location, loss of privacy aspect of ATSC 3.0 as well. It could be radically different world once it’s fully stationed. But, the majority here don’t seem to care, so probably ok to most.

These days I think privacy is one of those things we are starting to not have, not just believe not have. The latest antics by congress in expanding 702 are worrying. I’m all for keeping us safe, but man…
