"your Roku is reporting that it cannot play this surround sound video"

hi. I have an LG 4K TV in my living room with a Roku Stick 4k and a Yamaha 2-channel soundbar.

I also have a TCL Roku TV in my bedroom with a Samsung surround sound system. I would like to record shows on my Legacy 2-tuner Tablo in surround for when I watch TV in my bedroom. But in my living room I cannot play anything on my DVR - I get the error in quotes above, about the roku unable to play surround sound. It simply won’t let me play the video. It SHOULD be able to combine the five channels into stereo, that’s what happens when I watch a DVD or YouTube video that has 5.1

What is the solution to this? Is it a Tablo issue or a Roku issue?

PS everything has the most recent firmware. This is also not a new problem - I’ve been experiencing it for months.

I don’t know about the Legacy Tablo, since I have a Gen 4. However, I can tell you that with OS14, Roku changed the way it handle sound. For Gen 4 users using Roku, that meant that for many of them, the Tablo app would not play OTA programs or recordings at all. It would kick itself back to the program guide or the library page. The workaround was to force the Roku into Dolby Digital mode, but even then many users got picture but no sound.

Tablo eventually created a setting where Roku users could force the system to record in plain stereo. This fixed the problem, but meant that users did not have access to Surround Sound.

Again, this was a Roku induced problem, not a Tablo induced problem. What you have sounds similar, but I have not previously heard of Legacy users having a Surround conflict with Roku.

This article may help.

Unfortunately, if this doesn’t work, you might need to disable surround sound to get this to work on both Rokus.

I couldn’t find anything that would fix this using a Legacy tablo with a Roku. Switched to a Firestick and everything is good again. Other people have said that the ONN streamer also works well to solve this problem.
