…and a Lifetime TV Guide subscriptions aren’t a membership! nor an entitlement to a free upgrade to Premium Service Subscription, they’re basically a one-time payment plan, contracting you to what ever terms.
I will, yes, especially because it alleviates the awkward hassle of using my remote when I’m working out on my recumbent bike or treadmill. But to be honest, even if I didn’t have those machines whatsoever to work out on, $20 a year would still be worth the extra price, albeit just barely (if it was $2 or more a month, as hit and miss as it sometimes is, I wouldn’t purchase it).
I just subbed. It’s $20 for a year, which is less than $2 a month. I would assume over time, the service will get better and better. I wish they already had an ATSC 3.0 device out now, as I would buy it. Gimmie a Quad 3.0.
I switched from Tivos that had PERFECT commercial skip, included with my Tivo Lifetime subscription.
Bought a couple of Tablos, and a Lifetime Sub, based on the great reviews from customers.
I don’t want to pay for 2 Commercial Skip subscriptions for 2 Tablos, for a service that works sometimes.
Surprised they don’t even offer lifetime commercial skip subs.
I don’t feel a reason to recommend Tablo, or show them any more loyalty.
We all understand that their choice of technology makes it difficult to do commercial skip, but that was Tablo’s choice.
I will be more careful picking my next OTA DVR.
We understand its a business, and they need to make all the money they can.
I need to save as much of my money as I can.
Maybe Management will make some pricing changes…
Good Luck to you all!
Your TIVOs had perfect commercial skip because it was only for certain shows and it is a completely manual process by Tivo. Tablo’s commercial skip is for almost every show (there are a few exceptions, and it is automatic using servers hosted by Amazon…which is the reason for the extra cost).
No lifetime because the Tablo folks want to be able to sustain this service for as long as they offer it. Lifetime would likely cause it to collapse after a couple of years.
This service will likely work a lot better with a smaller user base subscribed to it. Right now I would imagine most people use it because it is free. Less load should make it work better.
You made a good choice picking the Tablo DVR. I heartily recommend this product, and they certainly aren’t out to cheat anyone. These decisions make the most sense for both the business and the consumers.
Yes. It almost appears if they ended the lifetime option they could end a substantiation point of contention and could move forward treating all their customers to loyal payments.
They’ve “sold-out” of their new Quad model several times last year, presumably massing several thousands of new customers. A handful of disgruntlement customers, who’ve already paid their lifetime allotment, probably has a minority impact.
@ djk44883 You are correct. They already got my money. I don’t matter anymore.
There is a new customer born every minute.
My minute has passed.
Fading away now,
Its only TV
Just for clarity, and maybe things have changed, but that lifetime subscription is for the life of that TiVo unit and doesn’t transfer to a new unit, correct? I only ask because even with the Tablo subscription changes a while back that’s still for concurrent number of devices, not linked to the specific device itself and can easily be transferred to another device (i.e. you replace a OG 4-tuner that is simply EOL and no longer works with a Quad).
I’m in the same boat as far as saving money. As such, while Tablo Commercial Skip is convenient, it’s also entirely optional. I have no problem using the existing FF previews to manually “skip” commercials in just a few seconds since Tablo Commercial Skip is now going to be a paid add-on service. I have chosen to give higher priority to saving money than the convenience of not having to manually FF for a few seconds. To each his own.
And I would even entertain an “unreasonable” price. A certain percentage of us just roll that way and I still hope Nuvyyo will reconsider at some point. It’s the very reason I cut the cord in the first place and (Amazon Prime notwithstanding) have no monthly recurring TV charges.
No. It fails too often, as many here say. I have not found or received an answer to why it fails, so I give up. It’s worked on occasion, but it’s too hit and miss and seems to be worse after announcement of the upcoming Premium Service, so I don’t feel like paying for it. It fails on a late night talk show on a major network – 6 commercials in a row in one break.
If you want to watch shows recorded on a table, you’ll need to pay for internet access… TV charge albeit indirect.
I’m still on the fence about paying for commercial skip, but I’m leaning towards turning off commercial skip tonight when I get home from work, for the following reasons.
Like many, I do NOT like anymore reoccurring monthly or annual fees than I have to, or choose to!
Yes I pay for internet, but I have WOW, and for 100 down/10 up, that costs me $34.99/month, with no taxes, which I’m still blown away that our government doesn’t tax my internet (I know hush)!
I agree that $20/year is not that much, but you all know full well that once any company gets you hooked on their subscription service, that eventually that cost will increase, right after they tell you how much their overhead has risen, which is the main reason that I’m sure that of us paid for the lifetime guide service.
What really is pushing me towards shutting off commercial skip tonight, is twice in the last month, when commercial skip failed, while I was fast forwarding through the commercials, I found a new show that I had never heard of, and started recording them, and if it wasn’t for fast forwarding though those commercials, I would have never heard about that new show.
And really how long do I waste fast forwarding through commercials in my one hour shows I record?
I would think it is only a few minutes, tops!
Still I feel like others, that once I paid for a lifetime guide subscription, that commercial skip should have been included, but I think that has been fully beaten to death on this thread now!
Best Regards,
Robert
I have Tivos as well. A pair of Bolts (the ones that could do either cable card OR OTA) and a pair or minis. Liked the devices. The subscription fees were killing it for me though. (I was annual, not lifetime). Talked to TiVo about buying lifetime and they wouldn’t let me. So I have 2 bolts, 2 minis, and all the remotes in a box in the basement. They’re kinda useless now and nobody wanted them on Craigslist or Marketplace when I tried to sell the whole box for $50.
We’re MUCH happier with Tablo. Is it perfect? No. Neither was TiVo. Couldn’t add apps to TiVo unless they put them in their small selection of offerings.
The Tablo has had their services for the same price since their beginning 6 years ago. My internet costs with Comcast have stayed the same for many years as well.
Content costs do go up (which is why cable/satellite and many subscription services have raised their prices over the years), but this isn’t about content.
I really don’t see commercial skip getting any more expensive, and the price is more than fair.
I kinda prefer doing my own thumbnail scans through programs majority of the time. However, there’ll be times I want to do something else with my hands and it’s very cool if/when CS works - just keep doing what I’m doing and follow along without picking up the remote. Well worth the modest fee IMO. Of course it’s not partially quick or perfect so…
This service wasn’t advertised as a feature when I bought my sub so any feelings of being fleeced for an option doesn’t add up to me. Isn’t a bad price and you’re not locked into long term commitment for the option.
Perhaps folks who purchased lifetime subs while CS was free under Beta may deserve a little pricing relief? That’s just not my situation.
I purchased lifetime and then CS became available in beta. There was never anything about it that made me think I’d get to keep it when it was no longer in beta. There was never any mention of it being tossed in to my lifetime because I’m such a nice guy. Never mention of discount for lifetime subs. It was a beta feature, that once developed was being considered as a premium add-on.
It’s $20 a year for gods sake. Get over it.
If you don’t use it. I respect your decision. If you do use it, I respect that decision as well.
$20 for a whole year is pretty reasonable. But you know, there’s always that person that unplugs their refrigerator and rolls it out on their front porch in the winter. Chutzpah
All true. And when the dust settles, I’m still hoping they’ll add a lifetime option that can work.
Not at this time. It does not work well enough to justify paying for it. I may try it in a year or so if there is an opt out within 30 days.
not paying for a “feature” that doesn’t work 99% of the time…plus, as so many others have pointed out, if you re too busy/lazy/whatever to spend 30 seconds using the FF to get through the commercials, that’s a whole separate issue…
I don’t see anything like this offered with any HD HOME RUN device…
