Will You Subscribe to Commercial Skip?

While not a “no cost” option, for those that already have a Plex server and a Plex Pass, I’d like to remind folks that with a compatible tuner card or add on (Homerun), you do get “commercial cutting”. Many may already have a lifetime Plex Pass. For those that don’t know, that gives you the ability to add Plex DVR with free EPG and commercial cutting. It also means Live TV from anywhere you can sign in with your Plex account.

Is it great? It has some warts. I still very much support Nuvyyo Tablo, but there are times when Plex DVR is a better fit (like if I’m remote and don’t have any of my own devices).

This has parallels to request for a “binge feature” - because cueing up the the next show is more work than it should be.

Or the need for voice command - because I’m watching TV, I shouldn’t have to move!

yes, Alexa/google/siri support would be nice…
At this point, I am not sure anything has every feature that many people would want…
I had hd home run/channels dvr/plex which was nice, but of course, you had to pay extra for all the features in channels dvr, and Plex plus isnt free either…
was gonna try a TiVo, but they charge an arm and a leg for their features…

Still trying to decide. So I understand, is $20 lifetime if you have lifetime guide .

I would like to know results f Beta testing. I encounter failed skip message and some commercials appear not be eligible for skipping. I use Roku app/channel as my access to Table. BTW, I using Tablo Lite.

Would appreciate any feedback.

OTA Fan

You’ll pay$20/year for life if that’s how you want to interrupt it.

Agree 100%. Nuvyyo is not sufficiently considering the psychology of their “lifetime tier” customers. Every company has its price, and I’m sure they can offer an exorbitant one that would provide a trove of up-front $$ for investment and mitigate the risk. I personally would pay $100 up front for a lifetime subscription. This is five years worth of a subscription to a product that is still really in development. Let’s also remember that cloud computing and bandwidth costs are continually decreasing (I can’t believe how cheap powerful AWS instances are getting). Nuvyyo can and should still correct with a “due to popular demand” lifetime option, at least for a limited period of time to reward their most dedicated user base.

Popular demand? There are only 86 unique users in this topic “demanding” this option out of the presuming thousands of users they must have by now.

Due to a minority of users… we use marketing research to base business decisions. Marketing demographics is a multi-billion dollar and have a clue about thoughts and psychology manipulating users by the masses - that’s where the money is.

If $20/yr is a bother, modifying your business model for a minority isn’t profitable.

Not yet. This feature is clearly not ready for primetime (or any other time) yet. I’m not sure what kind of voodoo Table is trying to do behind the scenes to make this work, but it seems like a very inefficient method to go about skipping commercials. It shouldn’t take hours for the commercials to be identified in a recording, and half the time it never does identify them. Even when commercials are recognized, Table misses several or identifies part of the program as a commercial far more often than not. I can count on one hand the number of times it’s worked correctly for an entire show. So no, I’m not going to pay for something that’s barely of beta quality.

Don’t get me wrong. I love my Tablo! I wish the commercial skip feature worked, but it just simply doesn’t.

It only takes minutes.

And I do believe commercial skip will work a whole lot better once only paying customers use it.

that is potentially true on a per recording basis…but when everyone that records ‘show x’ in a given timezone uploads that hour long show…it can sometimes take hours before the ‘processing’ turns into ‘ready’…so, while it might only take minutes for them to process a single recording, if the end result is that you are standing in line waiting for you few min’s for a few hours…then it takes hours.

along those lines… a “time frame” for processing would really be great. Due to internet speed, I’d like to have my processing done overnight. Me, I don’t generally watch shows until some later time. Others want it ASAP, they can tick the box for now.

I ought to grumble; if I’m paying $20 for an entire year and the hassle of annual billing processing - I should have some option to schedule when I want things uploaded! Loyal multi-tablo annual subscribers deserve this choice because we’ll keep paying. :grouchy_old_guy:

Gotcha. I do think time will be reduced when the user count goes down. As for me, I either watch shows live or wait till the next day (or much longer), so I haven’t noticed the delay. (I was just going by Tablo info).

No I will not pay extra. Everyone wants to nickle and dime us for every little thing. I know how to fast forward and from what I’m reading it doesn’t work reliably anyway.

I wonder if I can program my Harmony remote to do 15 second, 30 second, 60 second skips forward. Something like, Fast Forward, pause x seconds, play.
We’re actually wearing out Roku remotes from hitting that right arrow.

A skip/jump is way more convenient than FFing hit-n-miss.

I may try programming it today after my wife goes out. Don’t want to mess with it while she’s watching TV. That seems to get me in trouble every time.

To answer my own question: Yes.

After reviewing the positive rate over the last month there were only two programs that failed due to reception issues. Even though the reception problem seemed to happen in the first few seconds of the recording no commercial skip was processed.

Given that, it is worth $20/year.

Yes I already paid. It works near flawlessly! I so enjoy it. $20 ! Who cares. About 6 cents a day! So for my usage about 1 cent per show. And I save close to an hour a day not waiting for the commercials to end!

I just did. I have a first generation 4 tuner with a lifetime sub. Tablo can’t be developed without money. 30 bucks is cheap.
