I have a 4th generation Tablo and when I add an external HD I lose signal strength. I tried two different HD’s with the same result. They are bought small usb drives. One 2TB and one 5 TBs.
Do we need an externally powered drive or what’s the issue.

That seems odd. Is the HD or the wiring for it running near the antenna cable. I wonder if you are getting some electronic interference.
My first guess would be the USB drive is lowering the voltage somehow. Neither drive runs hot and I can see the drives in settings. My initial thought is to see if I have a USB drive with a separate power supply that I can try. I can’t think of any other reason why it happes.
You didn’t say if was all OTA signals or only a few. While an external drive shouldn’t but could it cause interference
All OTA. Again tried two different HD’s.
Does anyone else have this issue? I wonder if I should send it back and have them replace it if I’m the only one with this issue.
I would send it back for a replacement.
It should just work.
If the next one doesn’t work, then get a refund.
Have you tried changing the Tablo’s internal amp? Maybe adjusting this will help with any possible HD interference.

Okay… and how are things when you turn it off? Do you still have the same problem?
Doesn’t change when amp is off. Still no OTA stations. I connected a HD with an external Power Supply and it seems to be working ok. Which tells me something probably related to tablo power can’t handle an external USB drive that doesn’t have it’s own power. I’m thinking of exchanging this one for another to see if a new one might work ok.

I submitted a support ticket and hope to hear something soon.
Their reply was to use an approved USB drive, which I did. It does work when I use a external powered USB HD however. So that confirms for me that the power supply is under powered on this one. The small wall wart isn’t up to the task. I can either order a bigger PS or just replace it and hope the next one is better.
