Warning for Legacy Quad Owners Before Updating Firmware

Just wanted to share our experience so others can avoid the same problem. We have a Tablo Legacy Quad with lifetime guide and a yearly commercial skip subscription. Our unit was working perfectly.

I was curious about the new firmware because it mentioned streaming channels and other upgrades. Before doing anything, I called Tablo customer service twice — once by myself and once with my husband. Both times we were told the update would not affect our Legacy Quad. We were assured it would simply add another app, and that we could continue using the old app for commercial skip while using the new one for streaming channels and new features.

We went ahead with the update. At first everything seemed fine. A couple of days later, I watched TV on our Roku as usual before bed. The next morning the Tablo was completely bricked. Our best guess is that it performed another update overnight and that’s when it failed.

We really wish we had never updated. Just wanted to give others a heads-up so you can make an informed decision before upgrading your Legacy Quad.

No issues here at all upgrading our legacy 4 tuner networked Tablo. While it seems like it would be quite the coincidence, you might consider replacing your power supply.

There are many of us who tested the new firmware for a quite lengthy period of time and I’m not recalling any situations where the device was bricked AFTER successfully completing the update.

Have you opened a ticket with Tablo support about this?

We reached out to Tablo support, and the rep walked us through a bunch of troubleshooting steps. In the end, they basically said there wasn’t anything else they could do and reminded us that the Legacy models aren’t sold anymore, which I already knew. I will say he didn’t seem surprised when I told him this happened after we updated the firmware.

I also posted about this on Reddit. Most people said their updates went fine, but a few had issues. One person described exactly what happened to us: their unit updated, worked for about a week, and then suddenly bricked. That’s why I think the update caused it. Mine was working perfectly before this. I even tried a different power supply just to rule that out, and it still won’t work.

Back in the day I had an OG Tablo 2-tuner that I was positive was dead. I kept doing factory resets, and finally did a 30/30/30 reset (hold reset button down for 30 secs, then pull power still holding reset button for another 30, and then power up while still holding reset down for 30 more secs) and unbelievably it came back to life (I used it for a few more years until I replaced with a Quad). I would have bet money that it was permanently dead.

Maybe you’ve already tried a factory reset, but at this point you’ve got nothing to lose.

Sorry to hear about this outcome for you.

I have a similar problem on the AppleTV and my Tablo Legacy 4-Tuner (you are not alone!). I also have a Roku on a third television that I don’t really use. The coexistence of the two applications (Tablo Legacy App & Tablo 4th gen App) worked very well on my iPhone and iPad… No, it was yesterday.

And now, everything is going wrong! Not able to load record on both app, (AppleTV, iPad, iPhone). Don’t tell me to reset everything: it is already done.

And to make matters worse, after updating the device to firmware version 2.2.58, it rolled back to firmware version 2.2.42. The Tablo 4th Gen app obviously won’t connect to the device anymore, and the Tablo Legacy app tells me the firmware is up to date??? Will it eventually wake up and update to version 2.2.60? I’m not reassured by this transition, given all the issues we’ve been experiencing for the past week.

Questionable technical support: it’s pretty clear that an automated system is responding to us, but the problem is that said system doesn’t save the last responses it sent, so it sends the same instructions more than once…

We haven’t heard from you recently… We apologize… For your issue, do this… yes, that’s exactly what you wrote to me yesterday as well!

The service used to seem more professional in the past. Which leads me to believe they want to phase out support for the Tablo Legacy. As a QA, I’ve seen better: I’ve never encountered firmware this problematic!

A ticket has been opened… I can’t wait to see what Jade finds this time!

At the risk of sounding pedantic when a few others are having issues; I wanted to let folks know mostly this upgrade goes off without a hitch especially if you are already at 2.2.58. My Legacy Quad has never run better than right now. I am Cat6A fiber connected so its always a very clean jitter free handshake during updates. Something to think about if you are using wifi – my .02

jean001,
My “Grandfathered” subscriptions are still working. Hope that doesn’t change but for now all is very slick! Possible mitigating factor --jean001 – we ONLY use the legacy app and have zero interest in the new stuff at all. We have a zillion streaming apps and only need to use our 5 local news channels via OTA even though a Tablo scan would be about 45-50 channels, but again no thanks for us just the 5 main networks locally are in our view list. Simple and exactly what we need.

Thank you Tablo. Running slick and smooth!!!
