Updated hardware for Roku's 2 and 3

It looks like the recent price drop on the roku 3 may not have been to make way for a roku 4 (4k?), but to roll out the new versions of the roku 2 and 3 which are available now.

The new 2015 version of the roku 3 now includes a voice search remote in the box similar to that of the current fire tv. The internal hardware of the roku box itself has been unchanged, but this new remote brings the price point back up to the original $99.

The new 2015 version of the roku 2 has the exact same internal hardware as the current (and new) roku 3. The only difference is in the remote. The new roku 2 boxed remote is not voice search capable and lacks the battery draining headphone jack as well, but if you can live without those features the price for the roku 2 is $69.

Another note to add on the new roku 2 is that the remote is not wifi direct like the roku 3, but is IR.

Also for those who don’t know both Roku and third party have Android apps for your phone to be used as a remote.I believe they work with all the Rokus but not sure about the Roku Stick.

Roku 2, 2015 model, with only an IR remote is a big step back in my opinion. I like hiding the Roku away and being able to point the remote anywhere.

They could have at least done a Bluetooth remote like the Fire TV.

Here is my take on this announcement. I think Roku will break the cycle of introducing new hardware at the same price with the Roku 4. If you look at the lineup just announced looks like the Roku 4 could be priced at $129 to $139 which to me suggest they want to increase the price point for 4k.

So you think they’re still is going to be a Roku 4 soon? From the stuff that I read, rumors and their webpage looks like maybe the 4K Roku is being built in to certain TVs.

Done some more reading looks like there will be 4K box by somebody so I guess I’ll just keep waiting on the sidelines. I read an article where they are claiming the new Apple TV was rumored to have 4K support but now Apple is backing out of that the new Apple TV will not be 4K. It looks like it’s going to be Roku with the first 4K box.

4k is going to use too much data. It will accelerate the move by ISPs away from “unlimited” data.
