UPDATE - Roku Revamp + Amazon FireTV/Android TV Apps

@TabloTV Is today the day?! Yesterday you were writing the blog post and.................

I wonder if they hit a snag… You’d think that Roku would be the first one out. I haven’t seen any new posts out yet. It’s almost better that we don’t know it was coming. It’s like a kid waiting for their birthday.

Aaaaaannnnnndddddd we’re live! http://community.tablotv.com/discussion/2048/now-live-redesigned-roku-channel-preview-and-apps-for-amazon-fire-tv-android-tv-firmware-2-1-28

I will say that the Fire TV and Android TV apps both blow the Roku app away when it comes to picture quality. I've tried my new model Roku 3 both wired and wireless, but my other devices are noticeably better quality and they run on wireless. Hopefully that improves with the new app.

@arrowrand Is your Roku set to a “display type” of 720p or 1080p? Does it match your TV’s preferred resolution? (FireTV has an option to automatically detect it for you and allows it to be set manually, if desired.)

Also which resolution/quality is your Tablo set to record as?

With the side loaded android app on the fire tv the playback was perfect. Just had to use a mouse app to navigate.

Here’s how you do it without the mouse, uninstall the Android app on FireTV then install the FTV app and when it ask to install the video player, hit cancel.  The FTV app should pick up the old video player for Android app you left behind and you can use it without the mouse.

Using the Android video player on FTV, I find that I have NO MORE Stuttering on LiveTV.  My temporary workaround until Tablo fixes the stuttering issue on LiveTV

I can confirm that this stops the stuttering for me as well.  Also worth noting is that doing this way you can’t use the fast forward/back buttons but it brings up on the screen buttons for pause, forward 30 and backwards 20.

I have two FTV, both wired.  One has the current version of the video player and one has the sideloaded one.  The sideloaded one also fast forwards and back noticably quicker.

Hmm.

@arrowrand I believe 2.1.27 is only for those of us who are currently running the roku beta. Other than that 2.1.24 is the current firmware version.

That’s the problem when beta users/testers respond with versions - no offense intended but normal ordinary folks never saw beyond 2.1.24 until TODAY, the 8th of April and then it wasn’t immediately seen on the Tablo - it may have taken a reboot or some patience with their servers being so busy.

OK, Tablo via FTV stick, the screen and sound are excellent and are just the same as if it was watched via the TV’s own tuner. I switched “inputs” back and forth and was able to leave the volume at the normal level for us whether watching live via TV, live via Tablo, or watching a recorded show. the quality all around was great.  The FTV app lacks some things the others have - can’t tell how many of a given show you have recorded as it won’t list the number of recordings you have and the drive status doesn’t show anything other than the bar graph while the other apps, the web app anyway, shows a NUMBER so you can tell “it’s 25% full” or whatever. In my case outside of the FTV app I can see it shows a 2T drive, about 500gig used so I know I’m about 25" full or 75% empty. The FTV app does not give you those numbers.
So, no number as to how much drive was used, no numbers for the shows recorded, etc.

Otherwise it’s nice to skip the mouse and do it all via remote for a change. I’ll let the cats play with the mouse.

Thanks, Tablo - for all the hard work on FTV app - it was worth it. I’m now very pleased that I went ahead with a leap of faith and sprung for FireTV.

Is anyone else having issues watching live tv with the ftv stick?  mine just won't let me choose anything to watch or scroll to view the channels

@blittle2

Can you connect to your Tablo on any other device?

Have you rebooted the Tablo? Wait 20 minutes for the Tablo to rebuild the database before forcing a power cycle.

@Whatzit

Which Roku 1? 2710?

How responsive in the new Roku app on the Roku 1? It is pretty speedy on the Roku 3.

@theuser86

I feel like an idiot now.  I think the storm we had yesterday messed up my antenna, I disconnected it and plugged it straight into the tv and it didn’t pick up any channels.  I put it back on the tablo and did a rescan and it only saw 6 channels so I put them onto the guide and it worked.  It used to have about 25 channels so that shows the antenna is messed up.  I’ll put my backup antenna back up tomorrow and see if that solves the problem, my guess is that it will.  thanks for your suggestions.
@beastman, it is TabloSupport, not TabliSupport.

The Tablo folks have a contract with their guide provider.  It is not something that can be changed on a whim.  I am sorry that Austin, Texas seems to have problems, but the guide data works well for almost everyone else.

@SnowCat - lets see how long it takes in the end of May, when a new TV OTA network called Buzzer TV is launching.  I think the problem really belongs to the TV stations…just TitanTV has an option to let the SUBSCRIBERS add in a channel and the source of the channel, so instead of REPEATING the problem multiple times, you can just fix it.  I even added some “fake channels” to my lineup to get what is on SlingTV, BYU, EWTN, CatholicTV,  MICASSA, DAYSTAR.  The last five are not on SlingTV - they are streaming channels on Roku.  DAYSTAR OTA Austin and MICASSA Austin are TWO of the OTA stations missing EPG.  On TitanTV I just selected the national feed (which is CORRECT) instead of picking the stations by the call letters.

Kudos!  Got the update warning on the Rokus and went to a PC with Chrome to update both Tablos (north and south antennas).  Saw the “10 minute wait” advisory, luckily for me the wife had chosen something on Sling for the rest of the evening <whew!>.  Installed the new and deleted the old Roku apps this morning before she woke up.  REALLY like not having to totally back out of the app and reload to switch between Tablos.  And knowing what’s coming up is going to make her smile.  I only had a chance to manually update three of the seven Roku 1 boxes this morning, but I watched an hour and a half of live TV between those and all seems fine.

FWIW, the official Cord Cut date is 4/18/2015.  Delays were caused by determining the previous 100 yard/meter WiFi link between shop (antenna/Tablo site) and residence (ISP, router and six of the Rokus) could barely support one stream.  Basically a 2.4G shotgun yagi at the metal shop building pointing to what signal was leaking out of the frame residence.  Replaced that with a Ubiquiti Loco M5 outside link at both sides and everything appears golden.  Another delay was issues with cable company ISP; although they would admit there was low signal at the residence, I finally got them to do something about it.  Because I was paying for four HD convertors and TV along with the internet, they agreed to abandon the 100m RG-6 aerial drop coming across the rear of the property and instead direct bury RG-11 from the pole at the property entrance to the NID at the residence (trees kept them from running aerial that 33m distance).  Once I got that brandy-new cable in, I called and requested the TV service be disconnected.

So that $125/month goes into the bank, most of it to be used for income taxes next year.  Grrrr.  How’s that for a depressing end to a happy story?  :slight_smile:

Yes, all seven are 2710 models, supposedly new not refurbs, three direct from Roku when they had them for $10 off and four from Walmart when they had them for $28 Black Friday 2014.

I don’t have a 3 (or 2) to compare to, but with the limited time I was able to watch TV this morning wait time didn’t appear much different than the previous version.  It definitely wasn’t so fast as to be immediately apparent.  I didn’t switch between stations on an individual Tablo, but I did switch between the two Tablos and watched a station on each.  Then the dog let me know she took precedence.

If there’s any major pros or cons I’m sure my wife will let me know and I’ll get back to you.  She’s the one who got me to finally uncheck “Fast Startup” so the Tablos wouldn’t stop, buffer and restart.  I thought it was kind of neat myself, I was happy the way it was because it was entertaining to aggravate her.
:))

I am late to the party, but thanks for a great app.  The experience on the fire tv stick is what I have been wanting since day 1 with the tablo.  Super pleased.

kudos.

Thanks @smeghead!
