UPDATE - Roku Revamp + Amazon FireTV/Android TV Apps

Any update on Nexus Player/Android TV app ??
It's been in the Play Store since the 1st, you'll find it in the browser version of the store.

where exactly?  Im not seeing it all.  I had to side load a special beta version that Support gave me.

I had asked to be on the beta team and they told ms to go to the tablo web app on my computer browser and install to my Nexus player. I thought it was just the beta, but maybe it was full release at that time.

I couldn’t find on Android tv google play. Which is dumb.

Well, it may be a beta version, but Google has a much better way of handling beta sign ups and distribution than just quietly pushing a beta build to the Play Store.

It looks good, but it has the video stuttering issue that the Fire TV version has. Whether it’s the app or the video player app hopefully they fix it soon.

Knowing now that beta testers on the Fire TV side were having this issue I’m surprised that they released this app.

It was released side by side with the fire TV beta just a day or so before the roku beta.  They haven’t said yet that it is done for the android tv system…

Played with the Fire TV app on my Fire TV Sticks last night.  Overall the app looks really good.

@TabloSupport - Some negative observations (others have mentioned some of these):
1. When playing live TV, the slider bar on the video player shows times of 00:00 on both sides of the bar (which is kinda confusing) and you don’t seem to be able to rewind at all.
2. The live TV guide is very sluggish (could be the wireless where I was located was acting up, but TV itself played pretty well).  It hesitated a lot trying to just scroll as it loaded the info for each show you scrolled past.
3. I couldn’t find any way to just select a channel to view (like you can in the Android app by touching the channel number).  Instead, I had to select the show currently on and hit Play Now (which is very cumbersome and a lot of clicks).  When I hit the left button on the dpad expecting it to go to the channel column, it instead opens the left slide out menu.  Seems like it should allow you to just go to to the channel column and select a channel.

You can press the play button on the remote when you’re on the channel grid to instantly start watching a show.  Slightly confusing, but works once you get used to it.

That's kind of the point that I'm not doing a good job of making. It may be a beta, but in essence it's released because they pushed a beta version for the world to access.

That being said, they did publish the Fire TV version and in this forum support said it was released. They also said previously that they were skipping an Android TV beta because it was essentially the same app as Fire TV, where they had more user interest right now.

The released Fire TV version number is 1.0.15, and the beta/released Android TV version is 1.0.15. Tough to see support respond to a user here and say go get, that’s the final and then still consider that same version to be beta on Android TV when both have the same issue.

Maybe it is their video player that is causing all of the stuttering video, and when I have time I’ll try rolling back to a previous version to see what that does.

okay, but the didn’t say Android TV was pushed to the public to download… It hasn’t been communicated nor is it in the Playstore for general consumption, which Is why I was confused by your first comment.

Fire TV issue have mostly been fixed, and I think I actually just fixed by video stuttering random issue by removing and uninstalling the previous beta build

agree it is def the video player causing the stutter on android tv.

It is in the Play Store for general consumption, it’s just in the browser version where almost all Android TV compatible apps are located.

I don’t know why Google is intentionally hobbling the Play Store on Android TV by only listing a portion of the apps that are actually available, but they are.

And I truly do believe that it isn’t being talked about by support because Google has created what is right now another forgettable TV platform.

Tried it last night and while I can see the program guide, it will not play anything.   Any attempt to play a recorded show briefly brought up the playback screen and almost immediately exists back.

please provide a link, i do not see what you are talking about even when looking at Android TV apps only in the playstore.

searching, same results…

This is the link I got from @TabloSupport via email ( i believe it is the same at the Tablo Web app)

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nuvyyo.TabloCordova&hl=en

Just click on Install or Installed and select your Android TV box.  Then it should install.

edit: It will not be listed in Android TV apps list that Google provides.  Not sure why.

Yeah so thats the link i got as well, however its not searchable, nor can the general public find it via Android TV Apps on the play store…

That version was also broken for me and didn’t do what it was suppose to , so TabloSupport sent me a separate APK to use which fixed much of what is being reported earlier in this thread.

@arrowrand - do you have a link to the play store or directions on how to find this beta if I am NOT on the beta test?  to be clear, i have it installed already, however when going through the playstore to try and find the “generally available” version you spoke about previously and were seemingly annoyed it was “released” I do NOT see this… So your annoyance with TabloSupport for releasing this to the general public may be invalid.  Thats all im saying.

^^^^What he said. The Tablo Web app always installed on Android TV, but prior to this version it required a MKB to work as it was strictly a touch based app. Now, it works with the remote and controller just fine.

On the app listing thing, there’s never been an explanation from Google about why they are doing things the way that they are. The developer of the Out of Focus TV app for Android TV had his app ready before the Nexus Player was released, but he can’t get a listing in the Play Store on Android TV. You have to search for him in the web store, and Google has never told him why it is like this.

I am the general public, I’m not included in the beta and had no idea that it was even updated for Android TV until I went and looked.

Log out of your Google account, open a tab in porn mode, go to Google Play and search for Tablo TV, that’s what comes up. The release notes say “Android TV”. I’ll try from one of the computers at the library when my daughter and I go to take her books back. I’ve never used those and Google would in no way be able to associate them with my account.

"That's kind of the point that I'm not doing a good job of making. It may be a beta, but in essence it's released because they pushed a beta version for the world to access."

Clearly we are missing eachother on this.  I was simply trying to point out that your statement above is not valid. Its not available for the world to access, and therfore never left beta, nor did they communicate it as being released.

But if that is not what you meant, then i digress.

@TabloSupport, can you please chime in here? Is the AndroidTV app out of beta and generally available? I think no…

We aren’t on the same page, and I think that the disconnect is that you’ll say it isn’t released to the public until after it shows in the Play Store on Android TV. Support can come here right now, say that it IS released and it still won’t show up in the Play Store on Android TV.

This is very serious hair splitting that we’re doing here.
  • No, Nuvyyo has never said that the Android TV app is officially released.
  • Yes, the Fire TV app IS officially released.
  • The Fire TV app version is 1.0.15.
  • The Android TV app version is 1.0.15.
  • Both versions of the app have a video stuttering issue.
  • Neither app should be officially anything until the video player is fixed, the firmware update is released or whatever else it takes to fix the issue is completed.
Nuvyyo made a serious mistake in releasing info about these apps way too early, and I believe that they wish they could put that cat back in the bag.

Agree 100% that it is hair splitting.

The FireTV app no longer stutters for me with the newest release. that being said, I did have to uninstall the old preview app, as well as remove the video player (which I am not certain to be honest what the current “version number” is) in order to get the new app installed and working along with the newest stutter free video player.

Out of curiosity ( and if you said this above my apologies) but have you tried completely removing all traces of the table app on your fire tv/fire tv stick, and then install it from scratch via the amazon app store?  Reason I am asking is maybe its possible you are still using the old, buggy video player hence why you are still seeing the skipping.

The version that I installed yesterday on my Fire TV Stick was the first version that I had installed as I wasn’t a part of the beta - I got no response from my request to be included.

So, ETA for the Roku release?

So, ETA for the Roku release?

I’m wondering too.  It was on 3/30 that they said it would be delayed about a week.

Pssst… I’m writing the blog post now. We’re ALMOST there.
