My home network is Unifi. I just discovered today that Unifi now is selling a $79 travel router that basically phones home, and connects back to my Unifi network at my home via teleport. So you are basically using your own network to connect to the internet through whatever wifi you are connected to on the road. I am thinking it’s probably a good bet that those of us who use Unifi at home would be able to use the travel router and then stream Tablo from the road.
I did see it, and technically yes, you should be able to stream from outside your home since it effectively makes you appear inside your home with Teleport.
Oh how I would have loved to have something like this 30 years ago when I was traveling all the time for work.
Speaking of UniFi, I have a bunch of their gear and am quite happy with it.
Would love to hear what you think about it. We don’t travel a lot right now but interested to hear how well it works. Looks like it’s primarily to be used for USB tethering.
Thanks for the tip. I’ve been wanting to get a travel router and upgrade our network from a Netgear home mesh to the next level and Unifi is what I’ve been interested in. Unfortunately, it’s a low priority at the moment. But I’ll be looking at this one. Thanks again.
Yeah, been considering when we DO travel and even are at family houses it might be nice to be able to connect via Ethernet but still have an isolated network to use to back to home.
They aren’t available til tomorrow so hopefully I can snag one before they are sold out. We are going on a trip several states away and staying at a rented cabin, so it will be a good chance to test it out.
I’m certainly not a tech guru by and stretch. I assume it would be ease of use to just configure one device instead of each one individually. I also take an Apple TV to stream when on the road and I’m not sure how to connect it by teleport?
It’s really more travel oriented in that if you have multiple devices you can basically “attach” the travel router to the WiFi at the hotel, etc., and then through that connect multiple devices to the travel router, which is actually broadcasting one of your WiFi networks from your home network so your devices just attach. But, with everything wrapped in a secure connection to your home network.
So as you said, probably some “ease of use” but also the ability to use one connection at another location to provide secure connections to multiple devices.
I probably don’t have much of a “use case”. My wife and I have iPhones and share an iPad pro, all of which have unlimited 5G plans. When we are overseas, we use the Verizon Travel Pass plan on one device when we need internet outside of the hotel room wifi, which is often like for Google Maps. Cell is fine for random secure stuff. Wifi in the hotel room is fine for stuff that can be “public” (again like Google Maps). If I need to get in to the home network, I can VPN for secure connection. I don’t really need multiple device connections. Kids are grown and gone.
That leaves “remote streaming” overseas as the only real use case, since it’s fine over 5G cell domestically. So maybe having access to that on a simple device (vs VPN) might be cool. Just watch TV on the iPad with a quick connection device like this. I do like gadgets.
We have a starlink for when we travel in our RV and that is fine. The only real reason is we discontinued YouTube Tv because the prices are ridiculous these days, and bought a Tablo that is at my home connected to an OTA Antenna. The Tablo has all our locals OTA and also around 100 FAST channels. It can’t be taken on the road because to get locals it HAS to be connected to the OTA antenna. So with the unifi travel router I am pretty sure we will be able to watch our local channels when on the road.
So we have made it to the motel, and I hooked the Travel Router up and connected to the motel wifi. Got it connected back to my home network. Hooked up my Apple TV 4K to the tv and can open the tablo app, but the wifi isn’t fast enough to keep it from freezing every few seconds. So I tethered to travel router to my iPhone which has 3 bars of 5G UW and it still freezes for a couple seconds ever so often but not too bad. We are going to a cabin we have rented tomorrow for the next 4 nights and I hope the wifi there is faster and or has an ethernet connection. Will update once I get it going.
Public wifi is notorious for being overloaded, especially in places where people are trying to stream (like during the evening in a hotel). We RV all summer, and have yet to find an RV park wifi that has enough available bandwidth on their “free” wifi that can handle streaming. Further, more sophisticated public wifi setups throttle bandwidth on connections to minimums necessary for checking email or getting Google Maps directions.
We have had better success streaming by directly connecting our iPad Pro to our RV TV via a USB to HDMI adapter cable. Even with LTE cell service we can sometimes get useable bandwidth to watch our streaming subscriptions. With 5G, it’s generally np.
I have not yet tried to VPN back to my home network to watch the Tablo, but I could do that with the iPad. Not sure how to do that with the Unifi Travel Router unless a USB connection between the iPad and the Travel Router would work. Still curious about this new device.
