From the first time I used Gen 4 it has been a PITA. I have had it for almost a year now and it just keeps getting worse. audio and video out of sync, recording will start playing then it just stops like you hit the pause feature. Gen 4 won’t record randomly, gives message recording failed with a black screen. Nothing like this ever happens using the tuner or OTA viewing. I use gen 4 on samsung 70 in with Tablo App. I was completely satisfied with my legacy Tablo and still working fine on my older 55 inch Samsung via Roku box or the legacy app since the Roku bos took a sh__.
ANYONE asks me about Tablo I’ll recommend they keep looking for a different make/manucacturer. Not even going to sell it (as others have posted) because I wouldn’t put this on anyone else to get headaches from. just take a hammer to it and throw it in the trash.
Posted in jest…

There are things I don’t like about the 4th generation like if the unit goes bad all my recording are gone unless I’m a tech guru. (Those days are long gone at my age LOL )
But we taped Dancing with the Stars last night. We were out and watched the after it aired before gong to bed. Worked for us. YMMV. Are unit is over 1.75 years old. I figured even with the troubles it has saved me tons of money. I keep looking at a Homerun HD unit but I see on their forum that it has issues to. I think I would buy a OTA digital box and get a nice size HD to record to. This way I could just record weekly shows by time slot and be happy. Yes I would have to move the unit to TV to TV if need be but heck I could use the exercise LOL!
Anyway hope you find a unit that fits your needs. Possible to spend the few minutes back on here telling us what you found and how it is going ![]()
My wife uses it several hours per day live and for many prime time recordings. It has some quirks we don’t like as well, but the unit works for us 99.44% of the time. I’ve also had the OG Legacy since 2015 and it’s also still chugging along.
My unit generally requires powering down (rebooting) when these problems arise. Other’s have brought up pixilation. that happens also yet unless the weather is really bad I rarely get that watching live TV. whether it is with or without the Tablo Tuner. I don’t like the fact that Tablo eliminated commercial skip (have that with the lagacy) If there is anyone with any worthwhile posts I would love to hear them. I’m sure a lot of people don’t have too many problems, but for those of us that do, some suggestions would be nice/helpful. Those of you who have little or few problems and tell me how happy you are with your Tablo doesn’t help me, at all. I come to the forum for people who have had or are having issue’s and have been supplied with solutions. I LOVE my Legacy Tablo which is the reason I purchased the Gen 4, even though I had read a LOT of posts from those who are having problems.
I’m sorry - I know it can be a frustrating and I didn’t mean to downplay your issues. Can you explain how the Tablo is connected to your network and whether or not it works okay on your mobile device?
If you’d prefer, you might want to contact Tablo Support to see if there’s an issue with your device.
My tablo is conected via ethernet, I find this more reliable and as far as mobile devices, we don’t use them. I do have the legacy app and gen 4 on my S24 but I can’t tell you the last time I viewed or watched anything using phone/pad/tablet/computer.
And thank you for responding. I have had the gen 4 for not quite a year now and haven’t contacted support about my problems because honestly pretty much everything in the last couple years shall I say the quality of products and follow up or customer experience is far below what it was prior to I want to say the “covid era”. I’m very cautious with anything purchased that I can’t see (in front of me), feel, touch, experience. Thank you again for responding.
I have seen the “audio and video out of sync” issue too. It doesn’t happen very often fortunately. I fixed it by a power reset of the Tablo. Are there other options to fix it? I’m using a Roku TV for the Tablo App.
Would you test the Gen4 Tablo app on your phone to see whether or not it exhibits the same behavior on recordings? Also, are you using an external hard drive on the Gen4 unit?
The audio sync issue is not always Tablo. Roku shares some of that blame. This article talks about Roku audio issues and how to troubleshoot: Roku device audio sync issues | Roku Community
Also are you running audio out to an external source like sound bar or AV system. Look for settings on those devices to enable audio sync. My Samsung sound bar has setting for syncing audio built in.
I do have a Yamaha sound bar connected via eArc to the Roku TV. It certainly looks like the Audio/Video Sync problem is a Roku issue which has been around a long time. Fortunately, it doesn’t happen often.
I can check on my phone the next time I have a freeze up while watching my Samsung 70 inch TV. As to the Roku being the issue, I haven’t used the Roku since it failed a couple years ago. I thought I had mentioned that but I am not seeing it while reviewing postings. Both my Samsung’s (55 and 70) use the Tablo app. Not using a 3rd party device since my Roku failed. The 55 inch use’s the app for legacy Tablo and the 70 uses the modern app. The number of interuptions with the legacy Tablo I can live with, but this Gen 4? completely unacceptable. I’m pretty lucky when it comes to operation and reliability of most everything I have purchased and/or built myself (at least I feel I am lucky lol my pickup has 111,000 miles on it and besides regular maintenance, I have put one set of brakes on it, those at 108,000 miles!) Anyway, I will start watching using my S24 to see what and if any difference.
Could it be Samsung’s Tablo app? And not necessarily the Tablo itself? Using the phone app might prove it is the app and not the device.
Since your Gen4 Tablo is connected via Ethernet, more than likely it’d be the network connection between your TV and router causing issues. How is your TV connected to the network? If wifi, can you tell if it’s using the 2.4 or 5 GHz band and how far away from your router is your TV? How old is the TV and what is its model number? Also, using old Ethernet cables (< Cat-5e) could be problematic too.
Also, I don’t remember seeing whether or not you’re using the on-board or external hard drive.
