While I appreciate Lon’s take, I think this is far more evil (and what he’s saying is very very evil). Broadcasters, like Scripps (company that bought Tablo), simply do not like “you”. Gloves off folks. Remember, they’re are attacking you. You are the enemy. You. You didn’t do anything though, but, you are under attack. This must stop.
Inserting DRM into the TV broadcast spectrum will be the death of free, OTA TV.
DRM is about one thing: Control. Deny it!
These broadcasters that support DRM are really wanting to shoot themselves in their collective feet.
The “high noon” feature allows a private consortium to overrule the FCC in regulating broadcasts. I would certainly hope that the FCC commissioners get highly offended at the usurping of their power and invalidate the use of DRM entirely for OTA broadcasting.
The big boys could care less about OTA TV and are trying to force us into cable or full blown streaming (like YoutubeTV). They are just squeezing the cables & streamers for the big bucks and if they force more people into those, they will get more money. It’s disgusting that our gov’t lets them get away with it. Somebody’s getting their pockets lined.
Who are the “big boys”. Are there carriage fees involved. And if so who gets those fees.
Big boys would be ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and the CW. Most local stations aren’t owned by them. It used to be in the olden days
that the big boys and locals would share in ad revenue and that was the main source of income. But they have found that holding the cables/streaming services hostage for retransmission fees is now the money maker. So they have a vested interest in crushing OTA and forcing people to go to such services. I’ve seen cable bills where about 1/3 of the bill was to pay for what you can get for free OTA.
